If retro is "cars I don't see every day" then where I lived in South London previously that would have ment anything that wasn't a Ferrari, Porsche or TVR.. literally, most days I only saw them and my Alfa 33 The point is all of the above cars arn't retro (yet),.. BUT they are interestingly modified and that should be of interest to even the most blinkered of retro heads. Bare in mind also the BMW that kicked this whole thing off is 15 years old. So most of the way into the 20 year old "proper" retro territory. Putting dates on scenes is the road to ruin,.. If you look around this forum you'll see what we're all about...

exactly. thats my point. retro doesnt stop just because something is more "modern" or incorporates more modern technology. it just happens that there was a bit of techonolgy revolution for want of a better word in the early/mid 90's and thats still going on. its a shame this thread broke down so much and we lost a member.

HT, that's of course my own personal view, i barely see anything older than '95 here and that makes it retro to me. i'm not saying thats the way to do it, just thats how i do it! at the same time, a mk1 astra doesnt interest me, it might be retro but i just ignore the posts because it isnt my taste. everyones different, as are their values! as long as we get along.

TBH I think the RetroRides community out grew it's title a long time ago.
It's a just a great melting pot for pretty open minded car fans.

TBH I think the RetroRides community out grew it's title a long time ago. It's a just a great melting pot for pretty open minded car fans. Great point, I agree with that. And its not a bad thing, the bigger the forum gets (which is likely) the more variety of stuff coming on, which is ok as long as we all keep up the same level of quality and interesting threads. I hope it continues from strength to strength. Twinspark if you are reading i would not take anything personal even if i have said anything harsh some of your points are valid and an asset, its boring if we all agree. Our discussions on here are very grown up and balanced and points of view are digested, no matter how much it may wrongly wind us up. The whole 'practical classics war' gave me a wake up call, quite harrassed by what the PC forum grinches were saying at the time, now if i'm not cringing about the whole thing, i'm laughting about it!

Yes that's true, my favourite point is that most people are open to anything, from full-on rallied Escorts to a standard 80s Mitsubishi Lancer. There is very little, if any, brand snobbery on here which is great! None of this "Don't buy Skodas, they're rubbish" or "FWD cars handle awful".
If someone posts a car in Readers Rides here, responses tend to be a mixture of approval, ideas and sometimes a little bit of constructive criticism. I can't really recall a time where someone has just recommended someone to sell their car and get something different instead. There is potential in everything, most old cars look cool just with some suitable wheels/stance. Others require more work but hey that's what this forum is all about.

I take it the fact that Twinsparks comments come up as guest means he`s gone? Shame that, don't know why he didnt just take a break and come back later to see whether there was more stuff that interested him, as someone said its such a melting pot on here I can go on one day and see nothing of interest to me then go on the day after and be here for hours.
Overall the attitude on here is bang on, I`ve said this before but I never go on any other board or forum ever, this is the only one I`ve come across thats populated by reasonable folk.
The best way I reckon to see if something is retro or not is to post it on here and see what occurs, it`ll either sink without a trace that afternoon like my poor 323 did (not surprised really I still sell the things to "normal" people) or it`ll get bigged up like my XR & Capri did when I put them on as a duo. And if it does sink, try it again in another year when a few more have disappeared.
But it all needs to go on, sometimes I`ve clicked on a thread containing an unspectacular sounding, recent car and its been that clean or that well sorted that its made my day just knowing its out there.

WHat is it with these grand exits from forums? Thats two in a week. Why bother? If you don't like the content, you're not forced to join in. But spitting the dummy and 'resigning' just makes one look like a c-list 'actor' kicking off about his lines for his part in Loughborough Municipal Theatre's christmas pantomime 'Babes In The Wood' or summert.

My take, if anyone cares...
Whatever "retro" is - now thats hard to define but theres something about "old" in there. Some people seem to confuse "euro look" with retro judging by some of the cars posted in this thread.
Now the thing is - does this matter?
Theres a bunch of cool cars I'd not really come across elsewhere which get posted here. If they are "retro" or not isn't really the issue.

Sad thread. I didn't agree with what TS said on many topics but it's a pity it went this way.
Especially when I'm off to test drive a 1996 Alfa 146Ti 2.0 Twinspark this week as a potential new daily driver! Late model, in production 'til (fairly) recently, not really retro at all, but quite a cool machine... May need some decision / technical advice on that score!
Anyway, this forum has a superb way of policing itself, everyone concentrates on what they do like!

Its not your the age of the car, its how enthusiastic you are about your car. All to do with vision.
My 106 Rallye is bearly 10 years old, but it has a retro 'ethos'. Whereas a standard 106 XL would bearly get a look in, unless someone has done something creative with it.

Am i the only one that has noticed the words 'The modified classic car forum' Written directly under the main forum heading?
Mr Twinspark has a point, and while almost everyone on this forum is happy to see pics of more modern cars done right there has to be a line drawn somewhere.
Can i put up a readers ride thread about my 56 plate Renault scenic current daily ride, as it's is retro in style/essence/ethos in my opinion?

Well in my personal opinion I really don't like the idea of drawing a line anywhere.
This is because I think the community here is a strong one and, as mentioned previously, does police itself.
I think the name RetroRides is almost misleading and only really represents the fundamental base that this community is built on.
Again talking from my own view point a lot of what TwinSpark has written is totally the opposite of what I want to see on a car forums. Terms like modern rubbish, words like 'hate' directed at certain models of car, this is totally ridiculous. His thread has served little more than to make one person (maybe more) feel like an outsider and put the rest of the community 'in the middle' of it all.
