"England were the current World Champions having won the 1966 World Cup at Wembley. When they defended the Cup in Mexico during 1970, every squad member was loaned a 1600E for the Summer."
"All the cars carried the registration plates ‘GWC’ (abbreviation for ‘Great World Cup’) and were consecutively numbered GWC 1H through to GWC 30H. The legendary Bobby Moore was handed GWC 1H whilst Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst had GWC 9H and GWC 10H respectively, corresponding with the numbers worn on their shirts."
I just went through all the reg's on the dvla website and only one remains registered.
Most made it into the 80's, a few into the 90's and one until 2003 but it is only GWC 2H that survives on the road it seems....
Date of Liability 01 06 2013
Date of First Registration 13 02 1970
Year of Manufacture 1970
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1600cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour WHITE
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available
A fair few came up details not found I just wonder whether later owners knew what they had on their hands.
Got to say though, how stingy of Ford only lending them for the summer.
