First post! go easy guys! I don't think I need to worry if this one is Retro or not? lol I just bought a Panhard PL 17 on German Ebay for €850. I have some plans to update the mechanical side a bit but won't have the car here for a week or two at least. Not sure if I can do the photo thing yet?

I'm UK born but have lived near Munich for the last 30 odd years.
The car will be brought from north Germany to me in the south by courier (I don't have a tow car that can handle something that big).
I have got really inspired on here recently and took the plunge sight unseen on the Panhard. They don't come along that complete that cheap normally!
I don't want to restore it bog standard I wan't to update the mechanics to something reliable and 80HP or so. Car is lightish at 850 Kgs. I'm thinking Audi engine and gearbox maybe but would like it to stay on carbs?

This is the colour I would like to have. Maybe leopard skin (imitation of course) seat covers? They are so whacky it can take that.

Lovely - always really liked these I don't want to restore it bog standard I wan't to update the mechanics to something reliable and 80HP or so. Car is lightish at 850 Kgs. I'm thinking Audi engine and gearbox maybe but would like it to stay on carbs? Can't help but think that it would be cool to keep it air cooled and boxer engined. Don't some BMW bikes have a flat twin?

Can't help but think that it would be cool to keep it air cooled and boxer engined. Don't some BMW bikes have a flat twin? Good idea! I was thinking beetle engine at first but that is such old technology. The BMW bike is upto a 1200cc twin I think. Research needed. Worth sharing already! Thanks Paul H.

The BMW R series bikes (R1200RT for example) have an air cooled flat twin, makes just over 100 or so bhp i think.. seriously cool looking car though, maybe squeeze a little subaru engine in there for a bit of a sleeper? haha also I'm not sure why, but leopard skin seat covers just sounds right for this sort of thing..

Lovely! We had a french car meeting last spring and there were close to 10 Panhards. One of those had also that pale violet colour, it's very striking once you see it live! My vote for the seat cloth is Helanca Mordore

Wash your mouth out with soap if you are suggesting a diesel! I hate them. I would rather leave the original 41 bhp one in! Thanks I have noted that hezekiel

Citroën GS flat-four engine? Very cool car, there's one in a garage near my place. A bit on the eccentric side I guess, but it only makes it so much more interesting

Nope, thanks for that. The guy is a genius no doubt but the bruiser stance doesn't work on the Panhard for me. Mine will be definitely different to that.

A bit on the eccentric side I guess, but it only makes it so much more interesting Well, I'm slightly biased on this one, but I'd say this is not eccentric but rather the most logical option. AFAIK the GS's engine was basically developped from the Panhard's engine. Not sure how much they actually share in common though. Of course its not very powerful... My 1220 engine only has 60hp but as they run at high revs happily that is enough to drive 130km/h all day and generally keep up with traffic. The GS weighs about 950kg. The 1290 GS/GSA engine would have a handful of horsepower more than the 1220.
