Exhausts and Mr Mot...BenzBoy

I'm planning the exhaust system for the (eventual) engine swap, but I don't really know where I stand regarding the Mot. I was hoping to run two small "cherry-bomb" silencers from the V8 and that's all (no big stupid baked bean can sized tail pipes... probably 2 in or something) I don't really care about noise levels, but what about for an MOT? I saw this excellent '80's orange and black Thunderbird the other day and he just seemed to have two small silencers on his twin-pipe setup, it looked so cool!

Shouldn't be too much of a problem, after all, there must be louder exhausts on chavmobiles, although then again they don't have huge V8s at the other end of them, but I don't think they bother too much with the noise, I know some guys with pretty scary sounds coming from Imps with barely any silencer at all on them. (an Imp only has a tiny exhaust, so a big silencer is often out of the question!)

Looking at the MOT Website tester manual, i can see no mention of noise testing. I think it's one of those things- just because it will pass an MOT does not mean it is legal, and Mr Plod wont want a word...

That's a really useful link Panda! Will come in very hand methinks. Funnily enough I was thinking about the Imp exhaust system and how it has one silencer, just like my Skoda used to have - so I guess one silencer per 4 cylinders would be OK! My brothers Escort had a race-spec silencer on his that would set car alarms off as he drove past!

there is a restriction on how loud the exhaust can be but if your car broke that it would be impossible to drive. all you need to do is make sure that the swstem is in good condition (not blowing anywhere) and is fixed to the car well. the viva passed with the side exits

Should be fine then! I'm going to make my own system - two inch all the way through I think - but it should be fairly straightforward really... just lots of piping and a pair of small silencers. Having said that, I looked on eBay for some silencers and they all seem to be silly four inch tailpipes and suchlike - totally unnecessary for a 1.0 Nova OR a 4.5 V8 Merc! And they're overpriced!

My brothers Escort had a race-spec silencer on his that would set car alarms off as he drove past! My Amazon is running a larger bore system, and that sets off car alarms quite easily, due to the deep resonance (especially when I'm doing only 25mph in overdrive 4th, as that's only about 1250 rpm) ;D
