During the time I was trying to flog the Whale, I spent quite a bit of it searching for what to get next. There was however, one particular model that I kept returning as the answer to most of my criteria, the Volvo 7xx/9xx and I happened across a manual 940 2.3LPT Estate within 2miles of home. With the deal was done on the Whale, within 30minutes said 940 was sat in the drive. Nice solid old bus with 120k on the clock and a years worth of tax and test. Having had a read about it would seem there's a fair bit of information out there regarding tuning and cheap power hikes through 'winding the boost up'. Has anybody any experience with tuning these buses? Is there anything I should be wary of modification-wise? The InterNetz speaks of gearboxes good for 300+, axles good for 500+ and not needing to open my wallet to get a mechanically safe 200bhp. Are these actually achievable or am I chasing smoke? Anyways, tomorrow I'll be tightening a slightly squealy PS or alternator belt and looking at how to fit a boost and A/F gauge.

I had the same model. 135 bhp standard running 3 psi. Fit a 960 3.0 24V air mass sensor, bleed control valve and remove the airbox and youll see extra holes that can be used, just remove the covers and refit airbox. 12 psi is safe, it'll pull around 190 bhp. This is stage one tuning, stage two is more in depth.

And to get to 190bhp will cost you less than £60

Well, after a couple of hours in the company of Stealthstylz we had the bleed valve fitted and what a difference it makes! A genuine LOLbus that even Matt (with his history of fast cars) was impressed with. Its astounding what can be achieved with a £16 ebay bleed valve.
After a spot of messing about we got the boostgauge in too (although, its postion isn't perfect). Its currently boosting a steady 11PSI with little spikes of 13-ish when it first spools up.
Its now impossible to get any power down if there is a hint of damp on the road and I'm able to hassle all manner of modern cars with sporting pretentions. Civic TypeR boy was throughly unimpressed, as was Astra VXR man when he was unable to nip past me on the duelcarriageway.
I've also fitted a JVC tapedeck and 12disc changer too and I've got a nice ebay purchase box (twin "10s and twin amps) for the boot, though, to be honest, musically, it sounds alright as-is.
I need to look into freeing the exhaust up abit too, maybe time to lop the boxes out and replace them with straight pipe until I can afford to take it to a professional.

I missed this earlier, but what you said below is too true! I've got a boost gauge, ball valve thingy and some purple vacuum pipe, grand total 50 bucks. Had big plans for T5 turbo and injectors etc. but can't really be arsed cos it's surprisingly quick as is... Round my way, all the footballers wives and rich folk in their expensive Mercedes get annoyed when they have to plant it to just beat a scruffy oik in a purple Volvo Well played sir Well, after a couple of hours in the company of Stealthstylz we had the bleed valve fitted and what a difference it makes! MylittleTony: Isn't it shocking how much power is locked away from the factory! Just need to adjust the ridehight and springrate so it corners slightly better as its a spot wallowy and understeery when pressing on, quickly followed by masses of oversteer as soon as it spools up. Not a very dignified way to make progress...
Rysz: Unless our paths cross beforehand, I suspect Feb will be the next time I'll be getting down for a FUCEM breakfast. I will take you for a little spin though as it is rather comical the way it punts itself down the road.

I can't believe how useful mine has been, had 2 armchairs, a motorbike, sofa, etc etc. in it, plus it's comfy, anyway, must stop gushing. May I suggest sir removes two coils front and rear? Totally changed mine, but takes away some of the sleeper aspect. Tiny bit bouncy, but that's most likely my 120k dampers

Tiny bit bouncy, but that's most likely my 120k dampers I've found some -40mm springs on Ebay, but -40 isn't a great deal though is it and I do fancy getting it low, even if it does ruin the sleeper illusion. also have a rather interesting dash to go in there............ I've spotted your camo dash on VOC, but I'm afraid its not really my style. I actually quite like its subdued stock interior. I am, however, interested in any other power gains that are to be had...

i shall start at the intake and work backwards. a conical filter hidden in a bottomless airbox if you don't want to have it hanging straight off the afm, a large afm off an early 960, (A huge cheat/ bodge here - zener diode. explain later), 15g turbo or onwards in terms of size. blue injectors from a cosworth I'm told are always good, the intercooler is good as standard, a V cam will see it get a bit more power, a set of chips from fred or TLAO from turbobricks. i believe fred has been developing them more than TLAO to be honest and this brings me to the zener diode. if you put one in between a couple of wires on the afm you can boost to whatever you like but it leans off the mixture at high boost high revs. not advisiable really. if you have a chippable EZK its easy to chip. if not you will need to install a daughterboard. the fuel ecu is easy to chip. next on the exhaust is to either open it up to 3" with no silencers all the way down or just remove all silencers from the cat back.
the magic number for springs chopping is 2 coils
hope that helps!

@ Karlos01 - christ alive I think you've just summed up the whole turbobricks forum in one post, should be a sticky'ed post. mk14dr - you've got a good cheap tuneable car, and a clean one by the looks of it, health to driving, keep her lit

Nice! Is the 960 AFM essential? I'm not sure if my 360 2.3T is running one even though its sitting around 11-13psi.

Not unless you plan to bolt on a truck turbocharger/19T+ really. I have Gold EZK, TLAO Chips, 16T Turbocharger 17psi, EBC Boost Controller. More than enough for now, estimated 270bhp @ engine. Gold EZK (chippable) £40 TLAO chips (more adaptable than Fred's) $100 16T £40 in need of re-build V cam and big ebay intercooler next. (top end power, better flow and cooler charge air than std) Should do you for now
