Hi guys, hope everyone's had a good new year! Have a question, and this is the best place I can think of to ask it! Would like some help identifying what the truck in the folling pics used to be - all I know is that it's around 1930's-1940 vintage - and that there's not much left at all! The only markings of any description was a plate on the motor, with Tappet Clearences stamped on it.. Either 21 or 71thousand miles on it - couldn't quite make it out.. Dials are fuel - temp - speedo & ammeter.. I didn't take any tools, so don't know if it'l run It's a 6 cylinder - the distributor cap is in remarkably good nick - I've used worse before!

wow what a find, the instrument binacle looks very similar to a Bedford design
is it on Jersey?
with the WW2 history of Jersey it could be a very interesting vehicle.
any clues to the country of manufactuer? (other than its right hand drive)

Has it been bombed or damaged in someway, maybe in a fire? Looks pretty shot up, even taking into account the tests of time

It was driven/parked in one of our underground tunnels in 1946 and effectively sealed in - they walled a section off around it.. I think the combination of 60 years + damp rock dripping on it + either a rockfall and/or people climbing on it & it collapsing, have done for the middle sections No clues as to what it could've been, the only kind of identifying mark was the plate with the tappet clearences on the side of the motor, but even then no make or anything..

I was going to suggest an AEC too.

Now I'm intrigued....firstly I don't think it's an AEC....look at the width of the tyres, she was only a light duty truck with a 6-cyl sidevalve petrol lump. Looking at the grille it looks like something from one of the smaller truck makers around at the time, possibly a Thornycroft or a Vulcan or something.
There's a possibility also that it was cut up to stop the Germans using it....somebody would have just chopped the chassis in half with a gas axe, rendering it useless.
Whatevver it is though it's a great find, and has probably got an interesting story to tell!

What was it you wanted for it exactly, a bent MOT?

Jon, it's in Jersey, so doesn't need an MOT ;D

Funny how (what I can see of) the tyres don't look too bad!

I think that's a Commer Q2 with a modified dash. My mate had one for a while, it was used by the RAF as a recovery vehicle on airfields, towing a 50ft Queen Mary trailer (he had one of those as well!).

^^^^ Give that man an extra gold star^^^^ See that small bar for the starting handle in the centre of the bumper?? There's one on the wreck as well. It's a Commer Superpoise from the mid-late 1930's. Over 20,000 were supplied to the armed forces during WW2.
