I only had a little time on the car as of the rain. Dad had welded the gear cable bracket so the first job was to remove the bolt and clean it with the wire brush attachment on the drill. The transmission end plate got another coat, and as I said it was applied with a brush! Bothe the bracket and the transmission plate don't need to look pretty, they just need protecting, so teh paint work doesn' need to look perfect. This the second coat of paint for the bracket too, as I sprayed the first one to act as a base for the second. And hung in the shed because I dropped the tine of paint on the grass. These short days are not helping I wanted to do more but lack of light!

Boy o boy just read through most of your thread and I admire your stubbornness in sorting that wiring out! A lot of people would have legged it.

I went to install the gear cable bracket, and one of the holes didn't line up correctly. The gear leaver in the car had been moving so I had to ream out the smaller hole and add a notch to go around a bolt head on the transmission mount extension work. I had to put a brush wedged between the front two seats pushed forward and the gear stick to hold it in park so I could get it right this time. Then it got a quick spray of hammerite red. I then spent too long trying to get the transmission mount back under the car and squeezed into its slot inside of the engine bay. Nothing is limed up or bolted into place, I will try that tomorrow if I'm lucky! The reason it took so long is the inserts in the mount to make it more ridgid kept trying to pop out! I knocked off when I could see my breath, and reached down and my legs were like ice, I had been out too long.

Well the transmission mount and the gear selector cable bracket are bolted onto the car loosely! It was a right royal pain trying to get the bolt holes to line up, especially when the only way of adjusting them was to use crowbars and breaker bars and and a sledge hammer(don't ask!!)
I'm too cold and wet to do anything more, so I will leave it for a dryer day to set the the bracket up correctly and tighten the bolts, then get the car back on all four wheels.

My brother backed his Landrover Discovery into one of the neighbour's walls while trying reverse into cut( the rear access for some of the bungalows). Then a few hours later mother did the same with her volvo estate(only with less force)
So I had to spend the only bit of good weather on friday fixing my brothers discovery! The bumper light was pushed that far back, the only way of getting what was left out was to smash what was left out (something I realised after spraining my wrist)
The replacement light has been fitted so that his discovery is road worthy again! I doug out the cheapo JML reverse parking kit which was from clearing out uncle bill's and put it with a note on my brothers bed. The note read "either use your mirrors or put your training wheels back on!" He saw the funny side in the note!
But spraining my wrist made it harder to work on the neon, it also didn't help that I spent time tracing the wrong wire due to the colour blindness kicked in so instead tracing a blue with white stripe I was tracing a green with white stripe. Also the gear selector is causing problems and not playing ball. I was too cool to continue and I will have to miss out on this Sunday's Yorks yanks club meet, I don't want to drive that far in pain in-case I have any further mishaps.

Well while I was bored and stuck in the hoseI doug out the face place of the instrument cluster and shoved it in the scanner(too big for scanner so I just played with what I got) Original dials Here is one idea of revamping the instrument cluster giving it a retro/smiths feel (sorry but it is rough and done in ms paint) the font of the numbers really needs to be changed to something slimmer and more fitting to the style. I might get it done properly by a professional company that makes them and fit with white needles rather than the orange it comes with. It would be quicker than making a full custom gauge pod to replace the cluster at the moment, as well as being a lot cheaper. What do you think?

Okay warm and dry enough to have a go at the car! I had forgotten to look up how to remove the top of the gear leaver from the gear stick so I had to work around it! Hand brake cables disconnected the console was then removed! (sorry for the mess!) I did find that the bulb under the cover fas smashed so that is why I could tell what gear I was in when it was dark before the engine went! Gear selector cable disconnected at both ends. and was moving freely in its sleeve! This means it wasn't the problem, I went back under the bonnet it's the leaver on top of the 41te automatic transmission which selects the gear which is the problem! Any Ideas what could have caused this? If some idiot has attempted to move the car by pushing it when it's in park, could that have caused this? Any suggestions on how to fix it please! I put the car on the trolly jack making sure that the wheels on the jack were pointing in the right direction. I the put the winch on the tree and attached it to mothers volvo for power and dragged the neon away from the garage doors(dad need it moved as he is working on something in the garage and doesn't want to damage my car whe he assembles it outside!)

Okay for those of you who may remember I was thinking of fitting a Heads Up display on the car for my convenience (one eye has peripheral vision and problematic with focus) Well I found a never been fitted one on sale on ebay before my health issues hit in and wrecked December and the families Christmas. Below is a link to the offical site of the manufacturer (I didn't pay anywhere near what they sell them for) but it will give you the details of it! www.speedview.co/I will also be ordering some leds for the number plate lights which I removed due to the holders be so far gone the plastic was like mush!! And just to recap, I jave been that ill during December I have been in two different hospitals and was only released from the second hospital on New Years day! It will be a good few days before I touch the car in my current state!

With thanks to johnbkobb on neons.org giving me the info and a link to some of the bulb holders listed on ebay (Seperate thread to ask the question to keep this less cluttered forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=408778) I took the searching further for replacement bulb holders. This was due to the shear rip off some USA sellers were wanting for shipping per item to the UK. Remembering I still had an account with Rockauto I tried them and managed to gat a good price on 4 bulb holders with shipping and tax. So rather than try and modify a set of lights to replace the oem light units, I can repair the old ones and just fit LED bulbs. This will be a lot less hassle in the long run!

Okay the bulb holders I ordered from RockAuto landed in the UK at 8:30pm on Monday by 2:30am on Tuesday it was at the regional sorting office for Yodel, they had it out on the van for delivery the same day!! So I now have 4 new bulb holders, and before Christmas I had ordered a pack of 10 LED bulbs which fit them. (Why is it that deliveries always come when you sit down with a cup of tea to have 5 minutes to yourself?) I have to try and find the soldering iron and bits I need to change the bulb holders over when the weather is better as it has been and is forecast rain/sleet/snow for the next few days  As I am still not back to my usual self, I got my father to rock the car back and forth to see if that would help with the gear selector being jammed, no joy it's still stuck! I started a seperate thread just for the automatic gearbox fault forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=408884I was advised to have a read through the below thread whic may help! forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?f=123&t=337949

Okay guys I have a problem, the vin plate was originally attached to the top of the radiator support near to the bonnet catch. The vin p;late is off the car and in bad shape, what am I to do?
Can I get a replacement without having to take the car to a dealership?
The car is stamped with the vin directly into the metal near the drivers side where the strut bolts to the car. Also there is a plate with the vin visible through the wind screen on the dash.

I had some luck with finding a company to make a replacement Vin plate, I unfortunately had a few unexpected bills come in which needed paying so the replacement Vin plate would need to wait a couple of weeks unfortunately!

In a break in the weather, I managed to get out to do some work on the car. The plan was to drop the transmission oil pan bottle the oil and if okay reuse it later, and fit the oil drain plug kit. Then if the weather and health still good look at removing the plate I had painted red under the transmission mount behind the left front wheel. Oil Pan off! The oil is not suitable to be reused new filter and gasket needed also! After a good wipe down with paper towels soaked in white spirits to remove all remnants of the transmission oil. The oil pan was clamped down ready for drilling so It didn't slip. Plenty of gasket paste so hopefully no leaks!! (famous last words!!) Forgot to wipe the excess off. The oil pan and the old gasket were refitted temporally so any oil left in the transmission goes into the pan rather than on the drive. Not that dad would notice as there are enough oil slicks off his land rover discovery he just goy shot of!! As you can see in the above photo, the drain plug is low enough to drain the majority of the oil out the next time it gets an oil change. But is high enough so that it is less likely to get knocked or damaged. I must remember to put the magnet back in the oil pan the next time it's off. Considering that the car hasn't been on the road and I had fitted a fresh filter and fresh correct transmission oil. What could have turned it like this? Could this be the reason for the lock up? The old oil has been bottled to be disposed of at the proper place.

A little done today! The transmission control unit had to be moved to get the deep socket over the nut on the gear selector shaft. In the process of getting off the nut holding the selector arm, the shaft moved but it took a lot of effort! moving it to try freeing it up didn't work(it did screw my back up again!) I have no idea whether it is the valve body or something else, any ideas? As the drive was clear and nobody else was around, I set about getting the neon moved as the car was nolonger on the parking fork! Old proverb "If at first you don't succeed use a bigger hammer!"So what type of a hammer would you class a Volvo estate? as used it to push the neon rather than attempt to push it with my body(don't tell mother she didn't know I was going to do it!)

Well the postman brought the Vin plate which I ordered from www.vintagsuk.comThe gentleman sent the order first class recorded, which he said he would, but it was the speed of him making them that got me! I had enquired previously with all the details, so he was able to use that information used for giving me a quote to manufacture the replacement vin plate. I phoned at 1pm on Friday to order and make payment. I will refinish the top of the slam/radiator panel before I mount it, but that is after I get the old girl working properly. But at least that is one less thing to worry about! Yesterday I also put a board under the transmission and have begun to drizzle penetrating oil on the selector shaft and a little down it. I will do this for a good few days before I try to move it as though I was selecting a gear! Plus the lubrication would help for the valve body to be removed. And I am also looking around for replacement valve bodies just in case, and that might need to come from the states by the looks of things.

Yesterday I took the time and jacked the car up putting the axle stands under the rear of the K/sub frame, with the trolley jack under the front. I took the pan off the bottom and the side plate as I was told that I might need to move a pin for the parking fork. I had to stop and put the pan and plate back on as I had a doctors appointment (more tests). And with the rain/sleet today nothing has been done apart from looking at prices for replacement valve bodies for the gearbox! And crying at the costs!!!

I removed all the valve body retaining bolts, and the valve body was able to be pulled down just a tiny bit! So it was time to use a little bit of brute force, and did try to get the pin from the side of the gearbox with no luck and I forgot to kook again when I had gotten the shaft so far down! I did finally get that rod disconnected from the valve body! The arm/rod in the above photo, cam out of the bit in the bell housing in the below photo. I hope it will go back as easy as it fell out! The disc attached to the selector shaft is supposed to be clean metalisn't it?. The amount of curse word on of the disc and the rest of the valve body dosen't look too good either. The tab which had that arm clipped in looks like it is easily bendable back into shape. The half incj of alloy rot in the shaft hole doesn't look good, I will need to get that sorted before either that selector shaft goes back in or another takes it place. The look of the shaft give a peice if the puzzle, rust below the seal and alloy rot from the ell housing. Yet this was useable before it happened so it must have gotten worse with being left I suppose! There was a mark on the drum inside the gearbox it looks like either scorched dirt or a bad blow of clogged dirty oil, I just hope that is not the sign of something else that is clogged or bust!! The dirt or whatever it is does seam to come off with a bit of elbow grease and a swarfeager hand towell which is just a little abrasive(just enough in this case) There is a bit of a wobble in the shaft, but the shaft was hard to turn which you can get an idea in the video. I plugged the holes in the top of the bell housing as I put the pan and plate back on as I tidied up in case it rained before I got my next chance to work on the old girl next!
