Out and about in the week and I spotted this little beauty... I love the slogan on the tailgate. I'm not normally into the pickups made from travellers but this one looks right and has good proportions. Anyway, a few days earlier a mate dropped round in his new ride, he's not long sold his 1936 Austin 7 and replaced it with something more modern. a 1939 Morris Ten series M saloon. Give me a P give me an A give me a T give me an I... You get the drift. Solid as a rock and suitable scruffy. I love crank-open windscreens.

Gotta love the motorcycle indicators on the Morris Ten.
Were the rear arches of Morris Travellers all squared like that?

no, someone's made a full width pickup body for it. In my dim memory some commercial vehicle had arches like that but I can;t recall what. The traveller had full fat style rear wings almost like the saloons did like thi sin fact (thanks google)

Were the rear arches of Morris Travellers all squared like that? Nope - the entire pickup bed is new. Fully agree with AK - it does look good & looking at the pics, it took me a while to realise that it was an ex-Tudor estate rather than an LCV! Liking the 10 - remember rading an old article in The Automobile about one which was still owned & driven regularly by it's original owner!!!!!! BTW, aren't they monocoque?

Monocoque and IFS IIRC. Or was that just the Morris * sereies E which was the model below the 10. It was frikkin cold so I wasn;t crawling under it to look. Its apparently a lot lot more modern to drive than the Austin was, it has hydraulic brakes for a start!

I think there was an article comparing a Morris 10 with a similar-sized Vauxhall in last months C&SC.

No Brian - that was a Morris 8 or Series E (with the bug eye headlamps), Vauxhall of some sort and the Ford Y. An interesting read - even better because I was in a hospital waiting room chuffed to bits that there was something for the car nut to read!

The Morris Ten was a monocoque, but it had a beam front axle on parallel leaf springs. The underside closely resembles that of a Minor, which seeing as Alec Issigonis was involved is hardly surprising. The Ten was intended to have coil spring IFS, but the accountants intervened. The IFS eventually turned up on the MGTD and MG Y-type Magnette. The OHV engine was the forerunner of the XPAG motor. The postwar Tens had a different grille to the one in the pics.

The OHV engine was the forerunner of the XPAG motor. I was wondering what it was, as I had expected to see a sidevalve unit . BTW, the XPAG engine design originated from Wolseley - one of many things to point out to those MG owners who insist on going on about MG's 'heritage'
