European Governments (not, NOT the EU, the individual member governments) have given airlines a tax break against polution charges worth £2.7 billion.
This is apparently "to allow the airlines to invest in more economical aircraft which is good for the environment i the longer term".
What hogwash.
While the poor old motorist is being hit with "green taxes" civil airlines are being given carte blanche to continue to pollute!
Dear Mr Brown, please let me off paying road tax and refund all the fuel duty I pay and I might think about putting I save the money towards buying a new car which is more economical. Or alternatively I might spend the money on a foriegn holiday on one of those nice environmentally friendly airliners. Unless of couse BA and the like just gave the windfall out as shareholder dividends..."

I know its OT but its very serious, there was a thing on trev mcdonald or similar about travelling for christmas shopping, saying a flight is worth keeping a house in energy for 6 months! people are not bothered. this travel tax and ID card thing will crush us normal people. I'm at melt down, really going to look at emmigrating, like many others I know have. Ironic huh! ;D In the mean time right now i'm spreading teh word about these petitions via email... Will find a nice on topic pic later...

I can't quite bring myself not to care... I care, but I also realise that the world had a much worse enviroment millions of years ago and it will do in millions of years to come, lots of so called "greenhouse gases" are created by mankind and lots more are created by animal excrement for example. What is the enviromental impact of a single bomb being used in the middle east? or a dimond mine disposing of chemicals incorrectly into the local enviroment? More carrots less stick please.

It seems to me that fact plays little relevance in a world where so many are just determined to hate cars. Even when they get to the point they are purifying the air, making towns smell of meadows and correcting kids posture when they get hit by them there will be a crowd of people dressed in hemp chanting that they encourage witchcraft and turn people into racists.
The owner answer is to run over this people now, before they make you drive around in a car with a mattress on the bonnet and powered by fruit salad.

The whole thing has sweet FA to do with the enviroment. It's all propaganda and excuses to whack aload of extra taxes on the softest target to try and balance the treasury's books. I don't like wind farms, they kill birds and spoil the view out of my kitchen window.

We always need to see the whole picture of how solutions work. we all know for example how wasteful new cars are and empty busses are here at Retro-rides. to establish how environmental and ethical a solution is all aspects need to be analysed correctly.

I can't quite bring myself not to care... I don't 'not care' about the environment, however I do 'not care' about what patronising double-standard b0110cks is being spouted to me by the simpering gas bags who purport to 'run' the country. I have decided to 'self manage' my environmental policies, rather than take any notice of the inane toss which comes from the supposed leaders of the UK.

All a big money making CON, what they don't tell you is the other investigations going on.
Its all MonkeyCr*p,
Ever thought the changes we are seeing are the natural progression of the planet, of course the goverment wont allow that to be known if true as they cant make money out of it. (I am contracted to the security devision of a goverment lead Environment research company so you kinda hear things)
Hey we are not supposed to be here for ever, so if it all goes bang then so be it, probably nothing we can do about it.
All I worry about is the increasing realisation that soon they will force me to only own 1 car due to carbon tax!!!
Thing is its a pitty the motor car has not really been here that long and I don't want it to go.
Hey it will be forum TAX next!!!
I care for the environment but don't like they way they are going about it.

No such thing as a free lunch, the energy those things expend to make that "clean power" outweighs the benefits, bear in mind we ship them over in dirty boats, use dirty power to make em etc. Not to mention the effects they have on the local habitat they impose upon. It just "doesn't work" at the moment, they have a negligable effect, but at least a govt who helps people construct and use them appears to be doing something.

This is what i mean! LOL It must kill poor birds though, white is camoflage in our skys and they go bloody fast! I'd never thought of that. Everything we do has a price. as for view, our landscapes change contantly, but when it affects the value of an over mortgaged property then it becomes a problem too.

The ting which bugs me is the fact that governments can't give money to someone without having taken it from someone else. Where do you think this £2.7bn is coming from? Oh yeah, our pockets...
This reminds me of the scandal of the water company grants, which amazingly enough was never a scandal. For those of you with short memories, back in the early 1990s the water companies came under fire from OFWAT and others because leaking pipes meant that there were water shortages (mainly in the south) due to a dry winter/wrong kind of rain/etc. The water companies bleated that the problem was poor maintenance and underinvestment while the water network had been in government hands before they bought it and that they couldn;t afford to fix it (despite averageing something like £300 million annual proffit each). This is abut as good an arguement as me running round in the Chrysler with no MOT and claiming I should be allowed to because the problems were due to wear and tear and poor maintenance of previous owners. So the government granted them something like £500 million each (a total of over £5bn) in grants out of our taxes. The stipulation being that they had to spend the money on upgrading the pipework. Any money not spent after 5 years could then be redirected into their normal operational revenue. Well, no shiz, what happens? They all just put the money in the bank for five years, did no upgrades and then when they were out of the controlled period put the money in operating revnue, claimed a huge windfall proffit and paid out huge dividends to their sharehoilders and massive bonuses to their executives. And because it was wet that year nobody complained.
This is exactly what I predict will happen with this airline money.
It stinks.
