Total . Took the Pop out for its first journey this afternoon, got about 5 minutes down the road and the drivetrain started making the most god awful clattering noise so turned back. I pulled out round some parked cars and something went BAAAAANG underneath, lost drive, crashing chewing noises underneath and the axle locked up. Then couldn't move the car so tried slipping the clutch through it and managed to get it over to the side of the road. So the AA brought me home. Can't figure out what's broken. Because it hasn't got a prop I can't see what is turning and what isn't. As it is I can roll the car about no problem and if it's in gear it offers no resistance. When the engine is running and I let the clutch in the clutch bit works ok but when it moves it starts making mechanical destruction noises, so I think it's the gearbox gone. Lined one up to pick up tomorrow already but without taking it all apart there's no real way of knowing. Bah. Definitely need that drink now.

how have u lined a gear box up already?? There's a handful of blokes local-ish that have some parts knocking about. I know them through the Popular Front section on the NSRA forum and there's an Anglias email group. Just a couple of phone calls which is handy and very important when you have an old one like that. just a complete pain in the rear that I've got to change it.

id bet money on it being the diff, had pretty much the same thing happen on mine I've done a few diffs myself but the noise definitely sounded like it was coming from nearer the front. Again a little difficult to tell because of the torque tube. It's a real annoyance because you can't pop a cover to have a look, the whole lot has to come apart. I might go and take the top off the box actually and see if that is any help. Back later.

Well I've got it diagnosed but not fixed. Some kind chappie on the NSRA forum sent me some exploded views and a few tips here and there. There's a tin cover over the gearbox which comes off from inside the car. Under that is the answer to all questions as everything is disassembled from the passenger seat. I popped the top off the gearbox and it all looked ok in there. Oil is a bit mucky but meh, no bits, no teeth missing but I could turn the shafts freely without the car moving. Hum. Pulled the plug out the diff and half a pint of metallic black paint and a set of broken teeth and bits of stuff came out. I reckon it's that then! ive got a spare 1172 3 speed 100e box if its any help Thanks for the offer, 100E box doesn't fit because it uses a prop. So basically I'm after a complete Pop rear axle if anyone knows of one in Beckenham! Can't be bothered to take the diff itself out, I'll just go for the whole lot ;D

Nasty. Would it not be worth while doing an axle, prop, and box swap for an escort setup or something similar. Or is it too much of a chew on swapping it all over?

changing the axle is probably easier than changing the 'box TBH. still a sod that it happened, all down to the steaming 25bhp I reckon
