Thinking about swapping the 240. Looking at possibly a 1987 190 2.0E (140K) or a 1989 250D (180K).
The only Merc I've had was a W123 230E, which was a superb car. Know nothing really about either of the above 2 models, so any info would be good. What goes wrong, rust spots and also likely performance from each (my 240 really is rather slow!!). Not looking for a sports car, just a comfy cruiser really. Wheels plus a tap with the stick will come in the Spring if I go for either so ideas as well please.

Are they both 190's? Or is the oil burner a W124 like TonycocaDave's? Either way, they're good cars. The 190 loses out slightly to the BMW e30 on some things, and the image can be a bit tarnished as there are some hideously Barrie'd examples around. I like W124's. Some say the last "proper" Merc before the accountants started bolting them together.

Sorry, the 250D is a W124 series. Both cars are nice and original, fairly low spec and still on steels with hub caps, no awful mods (body kits, chrome arches etc). I'm going to try and drive both at the weekend, but can't help expecting the 250 to be slow on the move (although I may be wrong).

W124s rot on the front wings (just in front of the wheel, above the bumper) & estates rot around the top of the rear wing, next to the 'C' pillar (just under the rear side window). Above info based on a neighbour's K plate W124 T

I aquired a 190e 1.8 manual to use a s a winter hack a few weeks ago, 122,000 miles one owner car with a MB service history up to 105,000 miles. It had been sitting for a year but started first time with a jump pack and flew through an MOT. So far I have been really impressed, no rot, cloth interior came up like new with a wet hoover ( next time I'll wait untill summer so it dires out a little quicker).
Even the parts are fairly cheap through the German parts specialits (avoid MB dealers) There are plenty of specialist breakers around as well. The 1.8 isn't the quickest thing but it's not bad, the 2.0 should be a bit better.
I've been so impressed that I'm thinking about looking for a 190 Cosworth, having said that, the 320CE's look tempting!
