Bought a pair of headlights off ebay, new old stock £35 each posted. When they arrived one had a smashed case. The couriers weren't insured for headlamps as it came under their prohibited items, so the seller couldn't get any of his money back. In the end i got £20 knocked off. So i used the case from my old headlamp with all the new lens and adjusters and reflector built into it. I used oxalic acid to bleach the case as white and shiny as possible. New reflector versus old. Looks yellow-er in the photo than it actually is. When fitted you wont be able to see the difference between the two headlamps so obviously.

Got bored today and with the car in the tarpaulins i decided to clean up some of the interior parts i had removed to see what was savable and what was scrap. So here is the steering wheel.... It had quite a bit of mould on it, some glue? and decades of dirty greasy finger fat. Sadly by the time id finished scrubbing it had taken a fair amount of the colour off. So out with the boot polish. Half done. All done Originally it would have been a matt type of finish, but i quite like it shiny and patterned. Just need a new silver rover badge, as mine had corroded and when i cleaned it up, the rover lettering disappeared before the corrosion did! Anyone got one?

Looking good. I spoke to my mate with all the parts and he says he's going to have a look through his lockup. He recons he's got the povo spec cards but can't remember what colour they are. It might be worth trying to find some in another colour and use some vinyl paint as you can get a pretty good range of colours and you can get good results if you take your time.
When does the choppychop welding start?

Awesome. If your mate has one ill definitely have it.
Choppychop grind weld starts as soon as the kitcar goes. It has provisionally sold on ebay and should be collected weekend after next.

I bought brown vinyl from the local fabric supplier for my current project: You would probably have to do all the doorcards to get it to match but it doesn't look far off your door card. I have tonnes left over if you want it.

Wow! That looks quite rotten! Top marks for taking something of this magnitude on, be great to see it saved! (I used to collect Police car models years ago, have a model of yours by way of encouragement!) All the best with this!

I think this is a "stockpiled" car as 3500SE stopped on B reg-they were def not in price lists for that year -VP /VP EFI and Vitesse were the v8 models of that time.

I think they still assembled police cars though. as various bits of trim have dates for feb 86 on them. Its also got the electronically comntrolled SU carbs which they only fitted in 85 and 86.

Quote;-So out came the spot weld drill. The rust was pretty bad. Unbelievable on a panel that has just been sat in a garage. May be its true that BL cars of this era came as standard with rust!
Your dead right, I had the oppurtunity to visit the cowley plant when they were building the metro, the robots were welding together panels that had rust on them, they didn't care, nobody else did either, shame. Great project, please keep up the posts.

Started on the dash today. For a police dash it has very few holes in it and the only molestation is around the centre air vents. These are also missing, but should be easy to get replacements. Stripped it down and found the underside of the dash and the metal shelf the instruments sit on are guess what......rusty! So i sanded it down and zinc sprayed it, then began reassembly. Lots of the switches are broken and the bulbs don't work so may need to find some more spare ones. Also the paint is peeling off the instrument needles and the clear lens' for both clusters is cracked scratched and broken. So ill be watching out on ebay for bargains.

I have a complete V8 sd1 S2 clockset from a 36K car (genuine mileage). Also have 3 breakers in at moment, hence a wide range of spares for sale, Jim (Romford) 07967 920530.

Think l read somewhere that the police bought a load of SD1 when they went out of production because they liked them soo much.

Ive read the same, i think it was mostly the met who stockpiled. It was not just that they liked them, but at the end of production Rover were practically giving them away!

It's interesting that yours is carbs rather than EFi as I though all the v8's had moved to injection by 86? It was around this time they offered the twin plenum, which you'd think they'd have went for pursuit cars. I wonder if the EFi chucked it and someones move it back to carbs?
