More arrived today. An inner sill for the passenger side and a b post for the drivers side. I don't know how much of the inner sill i will need. I wont know till i cut the outer sill off. The b post is for an early car, so it has the wrong hinges on. I bought it so i could use the bottom end to repair the rotten one i have, as its a complicated shape its easier to cut the new one up than fabricate all that shape. Both parts are BL originals that came from a chap who hoarded loads of panels when he was in the business. Plus they were cheap!
The rear quarter assemblies i got for £220 the pair. They have a little surface rust, but so much metal for the money, especially when you see how rotten my car is.
I also have 4 doors. I may not use these but they are straight, so ill use them to align wings and such.
When i last asked they were £210 each then it would have had a big chunk of delivery in them. Ill have to do some more prep on these, but i don't mind. I think the only panels i need now are a tailgate, and decent doors. Tailgate i can get new from rimmers, but doors are going to be harder to find. I may reskin mine.
Look, ive done something mildly constructive for the first time!
Ive fitted the drivers side spare doors. Partly due to getting fed up of getting the rusty rear door skin stuck in my shin everytime i walk past, but also to use as a reference when i cut the wings off. So it was important that i got them gapped properly and matching the swage lines on the wings. I'm not happy yet, as i cant get the rear door far enough forward. I have removed the shims from the hinge, but its still no good. So when i eventually fit the final door, i may have to massage (beat with hammer) the door frame to bend it in a bit so it'll all look spot on. At least with these doors i can eyeball stuff better, and it looks more presentable for the neighbours.
It was raining and windy again today, so the rover is wrapped up in tarpaulin. So i took a closer look at the rear quarters i bought. The O/S one had a bit of a yellow orange stain in the rain channel along the top edge. On closer inspection i could see some surface rust. When looking ever closer i could see it was in the seam. DOH!
So out came the spot weld drill. The rust was pretty bad. Unbelievable on a panel that has just been sat in a garage. May be its true that BL cars of this era came as standard with rust!
So i cleaned off the rust off the rear quarter, welded up any areas where i had gone too deep with the spot weld drill, and then primed it with zinc weld through primer. Easier to do this with the wing upside down.
The gutter was too rotten in a couple of places to use as it was, so i cut a large section out and welded in a new piece. Even though i was very careful not to distort it with heat or bend it while getting the rust off, it still warped a little. So i cut slots in it to give me some adjustability as i refitted it.
All back together now. I'm very happy with the final shape, with a bit of final fettling it'll be spot on. I'm just hoping the other side doesnt need doing too. It looks much better, but i may still remove it to take a look.
Ive got to ask. Exactly how much of that car is going to be what left the factory and went into service after you have rebuilt it? After all the mega cutting out of grot, renewing sills, doors, wings ( engine?) there wont be too much of it left that actually saw active service in the force!! I take absolutely nothing whatsoever away from you skills and undoubted ability, as well as determination to bring a car that, lets face it, 99% wouldnt even dream of trying to bring back to life. Thing is, when all is said and done, would it not have been easier to start with a better SDI and bring it up to Police spec? I truly wish i had your skills and abilities, patience too, in doing what you are doing, id just like to know how you view what you are doing in terms of retaining originality? Maybe your take on things may bring into some contrast some of the views expressed when that fella from Classics magazine wanted to make reshelling and I.D retention a legal option but ended up getting bullied out of having that opinion on here. Is not what you are doing tantamount to a virtual reshell?
Yes your 100% right, it would be much easier(and cheaper) to start with a better shell. But thats the point. I wanted to rebuild something that was well beyond saving. Ive patched up cars before by fabricating little bits and pieces and welding them in, but this time i wanted to try and repair a car back close to factory. Also if you buy a 'better shell' it is likely to have rust in all the same places, jut to a lesser degree, so it would end up being much the same work anyway. All the panels i have bought and plan on buying are genuine BL panels, so as far as I'm concerned they are original. It probably is tantamount to a reshell, but I'm doing this project not because i desperately want the end result and retain heritage blah blah blah, its because i want to do something complex that i havent done before, hence swapping whole panels etc. And i always regretted scrapping my first Police rover. There are alot of projects on here that don't really make sense, but its all about the fun of doing them!

Thanks for the reply. I understand where you are coming from, fair play to you!! There are a few projects on here that, on the face of it, make absolutely no sense to do whatsoever BUT they are one hell of a masterclass in demonstrating various techniques, skills, ingenuity and sheer bloody mindedness in resurrecting a vehicle that really looks like it has no way back from the crusher. Ive always fancied an SD1, i shall watch your project closely, you are doing sterling work fella!! ;D

I always regret scrapping my ex police car (I say my because it was one I got to drive when I was in the force) Norfolk had 3 Senator A 3.0 12V's - a red a white and a blue one - white ended up getting stripes and both that and the red one got written off.
The dark blue one probably had one of the longest service awards and stayed in service for years as a plain car - stumbled across it by accident and left a note under the wipers - got a call a year later to say it had failed the MOT and it was cheap - it was so rotten and I had no welding skills then luckily I had a lock up and so stored it there while I atempted to find someone who could weld it for me - some local idiots broke in and when they found out there was nothing worth stealing they trashed everything
Cool thread. I saw this when it was on ebay and fancied it myself but it would have cost a fortune to have it transported over to NI.
I have a Police Metro myself
I take it to various shows and it gets a fantastic reaction. I have magnetic signs that say not in service on them which cover the Police wording when it is on the road but I don't bother to cover or remove the blue light and I've never had a problem. Passed a few Police cars and never been stopped.
Picked up a few more bits today. Top of the a-posts, a section to repair around the clutch master cylinder on the bulkhead and the o/s rad mount assembly. All cut from a car destined for the scrapper, which had less rust than mine! If i had the space i would have taken the whole car.
