....with cars that have been stood.
What I'm expecting with this R9 is:
Stuck brakes, Maybe a Jammed Clutch, Old crappy petrol, Brake pipes perished/coroded, I know the engine isn't seized but apparently I should service it asap??
Obviously the fact it won't start.
But what else should I look out for/do pretty much as soon as I get it??

If its been dry-stored you shouldn't have so many problems. No timing belt to worry about either. I'd be turning it over by hand a bit then boshing a big battery on and cranking away! How longs it been sat? Might be worth tipping some fresh petrol in.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

i would be using fresh petrol, new oil, filter and plugs from the off fingers crossed you don't have brake issues like i had with the 411!

Its been dry stored for at least 3 years and i'm pretty sure it was in a lock up before that.
It has a fuel pump problem. There's apparently no 12v getting to the fuel pump. I'll investigate it over the weekend.
Oh and I was gunna bosh a fivers worth of fuel in it and dribble a bit of redex into the cylinders

Oh and hopefully change the oil/filter etc. I'm imagining it uses the same oil filter as a r5 GT turbo but what oil do i use?? Just something cheap as I'll change it again when I get it running??

If it was really dry storage that'll minimise the problems. If damp got to the electrical contacts anywhere then you could be in for some joy! Stored handbrake on or off? I forgot to leave mine off and managed to spend an afternoon smacking hell out of the rear drums......... of course the manual adjusters had seized too! Best to try it out with plenty of run off space, or a muddy field that'll stop you if all goes pear shaped!

Be wary of the petrol...if it's been stored with anything other than a full tank it'll be full of curse word and condensation, may have even corroded through - I'd drop the lines off it, drain it, flush it through with some clean petrol then make a go at filling it up with fresh stuff Fully service the engine, see if you can free the brakes off, check all the brake lines, check all the rubber mounts and bushes, clean out the fuel filters and so on... Would be worth picking up a rebuild kit for the clutch and brake hydraulics too, as the seals could have suffered. Shouldn't take too long to get those done and it'll give you confidence in the system. Best o' luck!

In addition to all the above, the fanbelt will probably be knackered too as it hasn't been used for so long.

The list of weekend jobs grows ;D. I've got a brand new fuel filter I can wack on. I believe it disc's out back which may help. I don't know if its been stored with the handbrake on. It's definitely been stored inside. Can tell by the fact its a 20 year old french car and is solid

All the things mentioned so far, and it will have some bad earths. Odd stuff will have stopped working like one indicator, one brake light.
All the crud should have settled out of the oil so it would be a great time to drop the sump and clean that out if you can. As soon as you start the motor it will start circuating all that again.
Hydraulic tappets and other things will have drained down and mayhave stuck.
Automatic trans (if fitted) will have drained down and the seals don't like drying out.
Ditto carbs - some will start to leak again (Holleys and Strombergs are bad for this), SU and Stromberg carbs may have siezed the needle / plunger if the oil has dried out of the dashpot.
Just generally stiff stuff.
Another thing is just because it works now, doesn't mean it will keep working. Some stuff has a bad habbit of siezing up about 5 miles down the road. Callipers especially. Master cylinder and wheel cylinder seals can split when pressed back into service.
Tyres may no longer be round.
Brake fluid will have taken on water and can boil up easily so change that ASAP.
Anything rubber may have gone hard and lost its flex so change all hoses and belts as soon as you can.

we're all very pessimistic! Slap a battery on and give it some welly I say.
I had a right war with that Fiat Argenta after it sat for 10 years but once I got over the timing belt problem it came to life very easily.

I've known people knacker stuff up good and proper doing that.
A basic set of pre-flight checks will save you grief later.

I'm with mrB.
however, i would have a good look at the tyres, they are probably perished and 50p shaped... somthing else for your list!

Also I wouldn't put redex down the bores. A teaspoon of oil is better. Turn it over by hand a few times before turning the key.
I also know some people advocate turning it over on the key with the plugs out until the oil pressure comes up, then starting it.
I even know people who claim that "always" crank the oil pressure up static (by turning the oil pump drive shaft with a drill or whatever)
But thats probably only worth doing if you are startying a new virgin built motor.

Why do we do it to ourselves! Thats exactly what i'm thinking at the moment LOL. So Sunday (I'm at work on Saturday ) Is going to involve checking over everything, drop of oil down the bores, turn engine over by hand, then start on the fuel pump problem. If i have time I may hoover it out to make me feel better ;D Then Monday will be continue sorting out fuel pump. If i Get it sorted. I'll drop the oil and clean out the sump and drop the fuel out of the tank. Then see if I can get the dam thing fired up!!

Good luck, its not all gloom. Sorry! It might be not be an headache at all. just a tired forgotten old thing needing a little TLC, and perhaps an hammer! I was pretty happy at this point when it cranked into life and burnt out teh fan belt. smiles all round.
