I remember seeing a picture recently (possibly in Retro Car?) of an electric drag race Beetle. Been having thoughts recently about a slightly different take on it.... plus = best possible future proof city car? whadaya reckon? I wonder how the floorpan dimensions stack up.....

Yuk to pic no 1, but it does suggest a way of butchering a Prius for a similar idea. Having driven one I can say they are rather good!

Got a few ideas brewing along these lines and a couple of good contacts so might be able to get something going, I'll tell you about them at the Ace soon Did start scheming an awesome project on the mag but had to face it was a bit over ambitious with the workload and budget we had Main problem I have here is no way of charging an electric car up as I can't park outside the house - wonder how many people just buy a Prius and run it on petrol the whole time just so they can look right-on?

They are self charging from the petrol engine and I believe they also have those engery converter thingies to use braking energy to store in the batteries. No need to plug in at night! The whole platform of the car is a giant battery.

What I don't unserstand about the whole fapping-off-over-hybrids thing is what happens in eight years time when the batteries are FUBAR?
You spend a FORTUNE replacing them?
You find a hole in the ground to stick a load of toxic metals?
Getting rid of them *properly* will cost a packet too.

I understand the regenerative braking thing, but the apart from that it doesn't make sense to me - just from the putting power in and taking power out and the losses you always get I can't see how it can be more efficient than just a lighter car with a very small petrol engine. You've still got to burn a load of petrol and drag around all those batteries, even if you're charging them when you brake Anyone know why it's supposed to be so green?

The Prius is all a bit of a waste of time in terms of overall MPG because as Paul says they are not that efficient and can be easily matched by small engined lighter cars. However they can reduce city polution if for all the small local journeys in town they use the battery. It does seem that the polution is just moved elsewhere though. The G-wiz in the top photo is 100% electric, has a range of about 40 miles and is becoming increasingly common around where I live adnnin central London. They are no longer that unusual to see. I just wish they'd made it a bit better looking and reckon a Fiat bodyswap could help see to that issue

I see a lot of these lately, they make a horrible diesel noise: Ahh, the Aixam 500, powered by a 479cc dumper truck diesel engine! You can also drive these things on a full motorcycle licence. 60mph, dizzy heights! loads and loads of these around, seem quite popular.

those are very common in France, the car of choice for smelly pickled-liver booze-loving motorists. They cost about €20 less than a bottom-of-the-range Clio LOL! If ever there was a graphic display of the perils of drink its those fuggers.

I was working at Pinewood studios for a few weeks on a shoot and was under the electric milk floats with a tape measure. Most parts on the chassis are already the right proportions for a 30's rod and it's got beam axle, leaf springs, steels and crossplies out the box. My thinking was without 4-tonnes of milk aboard the batteries probably last a lot longer than one morning and the top speed is likely to be a bit higher. It's already road registered and you can pick them up for peanuts.
