My good friend bought a brand new car recently. It was kind of hard for me to feign enthusiasm when he brought it round to show me as new motors don't really do much for me. Noticing this, and after a few pints of the old "truth drug", he asked me what I would have bought for £12k, or what I think he should have bought...oh dear.... As he isn't very mechanically minded, I said he I would have bought a five year old Lexus and had some change left over. Now if I had 12 big ones in my pocket..... A Citroen DS or two A Mercedes 220SEb coupe A couple of Mercedes fintail saloons 24x £500 retro cars.... The poor fella only went to the garage for an Mot and came out 12 grand lighter! To make matters worse it's a Suzuki Liana . Still, he's happy with it which is the main thing... What would you have bought?

Hey, I got a mate just done the same thing: He got himself a brand new Focus. OK, so it'll handle allright but be D-U-L-L! Also it's a weedy engine "special edition" so it'll drop in value like a rock in a pond, especially as there's a new model right around the corner, and he got it on some horrendously expensive HP deal.
This was the same guy who used to own a quality / comedy Pug 104 a few years back!
I pity the foo'! ;D
Myself, well I might have gone for: a v.nice e30 M3, a tidy useable 911, or to be silly, a Dodge Charger or if you have to be modern and sensible, a second-hand scooby-doo!

An E30 M3 or an Ur Quattro 20V and have about 3 grand to get it perfect.
If I'd have been him, needing a reliable no fuss motor then maybe a two year old Audi A3 1.8T.
He could have got a brand new Focus for 12 grand, an ST170 with a bit of bargaining.
You kind of feel sorry for your mates (or your dad) when they do things like that. Not a clue really.

I'd be tempted to but a Datsport converted 510 if I had that sort of money. Baz at Datsport in Oz, rebuilds then from the ground up, modernises all the suspesnion and brakes and fits an SR20DET. His cars even have full a/c on them and extra sound deadening to make them as plush and smooth as a modern car. I reckon you could just about afford to get one for £12k with shipping but you might get stung with taxes Here's an artical about Datsport... www.datsport.com/Zoom_1.html£12k on a Liana? Might as well have just bought a moped and burnt the rest of the cash. What a waste

Alright first I'd get my 74 Imp up and running, then.. A Commer Imp van maybe, an early Lada to be made into a rally car of some description so I'd set some cash aside for that, possibly a Volga, I've always wanted one of those, and maybe a Volvo 740 to be made into a V8 powered stealthy beast. And I'd still have change from £12 000!

I got my Skoda for 12250.... and it's great! got fed up with owning old shitters that CONSTANTLY broke.... cos I do 50 miles a day minimum, I wanted something Diesel, quick and comfy... PRESTO! and I only pay £120 a year in tax I mean road fund license, I'll be paying shed loads more TAX, on fuel and such like! ha ha! 3 years warranty, pre-paid maintenance for 3 years... bargainous I reckon. Granted I'd LOVE a Ur-q or some other suitably retro metal, but I'm not mechanically minded, nor can I be arsed to fix a car that is gonna constantly break cos it's my daily drive! If it were a 'weekend' car... different story entirely....

Not sure I'd want to spend that amount of money on a car, unless it was something like this: A 1930s Riley 12/4 Kestrel However, for 12k, it probobly won't be quite as nice as this one, but should still be in good condition. BTW, it already has 18" wheels ;D Despite it's age, with a few subtle tweaks to the engine and a different back axle ratio (prewar cars tend to be very low geared), it would be capable of cruising comfortably at motorway speeds

I was a bit miffed that he didn't take me with him - I would definitely have convinced him NOT to buy a flippin' Liana - it'll be worth £500 all day long in a few years. Oh, but the salesman said it was a "rare special edition". I was speechless. The salesman must have been rubbing his hands with delight! He could have had any marque of car for 12k - possibly even a Ferrari (I'm thinking of the 412 nobody seems to like much)

I'd sooner drive a rickshaw than a Ferrari or a Liana but I get your point. Some of those salesmen types are quite sleazy with their 'special edition' talk but I suppose they're only doing what they're paid to do. Although my local Vauxhall dealer has a salesmen who's a real car enthusiast, who's being dealing Vauxhalls since they were selling Vivas and Bedford TKs, and knows an eerie amount about rallying Hillman Imps.

Now that'd be an admirable little car, but a Liana?! Being a special edition won't help when it's being sold in the Autotrader worth buttons and the owner can't make any cash back on it!

The older Fiestas are retro enough for me, I like 80s Volvos and Russian stuff as well as 60s and 70s cars, so I'm not going to say an 80s car doesn't count. To me an old car is what you make of it, if you want a Fiesta go for it, and don't let other peoples opinions stop you!

I'm a fan of the Mk1 Fiesta - much cleaner lines than the Mk2 which I'm not so keen on.... All the remaining Mk1's seem to get made into XR2 replicas - I really like the square headlights, and it'd make a great street sleeper / Paxo killer. Maybe RS Turbo engine?!?!!

The Fiesta came out in '76 so it's certainly an old 'un by now! I'd most definately class a Mk1 as retro and I think they do look pretty cool. There's a very nice green Mk1 in the village where I live and it looks way nicer than most modern superminis. Revolution #9 is right...there can be no real definition of constitutes a Retro ride as most peoples ideas are different. I don't think many here would class a Toyota AE86 as being anything other than Retro but that's an 80's car, as are most hot hatches, many of whom are popular amongst folks on here. I think it's the huge variety of interests and cars that makes the place so interesting

People who buy modern get so ripped off... and i would say some 12k old cars would be more reliable than anything modern...if it was treated the same....certainly more reliable than german cars. (despite everybodys ideas about them, IMO)
12K???
That would get me a 71 Super Duty 455 Trans Am.. A 68 Mustang Fastback, A Dodge challenger, a Nice brooklands, or if i wer looking towards daily driver.....
80's vette 80's Camaro (mint one!) 90's Camaro (real nice one) 90's Firebird (real nice one) Jag XK8 My Car (don't laugh) Sierra Cosworth (nice and standard)
