After selling my beloved Variant I,ve got to get a replacement. I'm after another estate, and have been put on to this. It's a 525 IX Touring. Does anyone know anything about these? I would imagine it must have been a competitor of the merc 300 4-matic as they are both four wheel drive. Its done 114,000 and is pretty spotless.

All I know is that both the Merc 4Matic and the BMW iX series were flops in the UK, therefore very rare, and therfore deffo buy it. They had alloys that no other 5 series wore if my sad memory serves me rightly.
4 litre V8 FTW.

4wd system is heavy and not terribly strong which is why they remained as 2.5 rather than going bigger A lot over here were used for towing caravans etc so watch out for that 325ix is not a bad car, 5 being heavier is a bit slow 4L V8 for the very big gearbox and transfer box bill rather than the Win I fear ;D

front diff mounted almost inside the sump, so sadly not gonna work. deristricted 2.8 m52 with a few choice mods, very much the win

yeh a 2.8 m52 would sweep. a friend of mine had an ex police 328 touring it was already fast and with a few choice mods it was a great goer. good candiate for engine swap.
only came across a ix once didnt really do it for me. i like my bmw's rwd. cool for novelty value though.

Not surprised - they were really aimed at the Swiss market. Really? that is one small market to aim at,considering the amount of investment involved I'm not sure of the exact details, but IIRC the law in some Swiss cantons effectively requires all cars to be 4x4 & have snow tyres (or something like that...). I believe that there are similar regs in the Alpine areas of Germany & Austria too.
