On my the way home from work today the brakes on the Viva got progressively worse until they went completely, I mangaged to get home using a combination of engine braking and the handbrake which stlll works. When I popped the bonnet I found that the brake fluid resevior was completely empty I tried topping it up but unsurprisingly this made no difference. The symptons of the brakes going were a hissing noise as the pedal was depressed and the pedal going straight to the floor with hardly any resistance. I have not had a chance to look at it properly yet but I'm thinking it's the master cylinder or brake servo that has gone. I need to diagnose it properly so I can find out what parts I need to order. Would this be a chance to uprate to a better master cylinder/servo? The car is running standard Viva front discs and Magnum rear drum axle. Any help gratefully received, also any ideas of suppliers for new parts!

were your feet covered in brake fluid ?? or is it all in the footwell,,,, thatll be your master cylinder...
if your servo went your brakes would go hard i think not soft... ooh and err...
either that or you've popped a union somewhere and its all pi55ed out...
i don't trust what i say so please don't you either (disclaimer)

I would have thought leaking brake pipe, wheel cylinder or caliper piston seal. If its master cylinder seals you will often find bits off black(the old seal) inside the reservoir and as marina rob says the fluid will be in the footwell.

Have a look underneath and you'll probably find one of the wheels covered with brake fluid on the inside. If you've got drums look around the bottoms of them for signs of fluid. If you find its a flex pipe or a wheel cylinder its nt a bad idea to replace them in pairs rather than just the one thats gone as they are normally fitted in pairs and if ones gone the others not normally far behind. If you cant see any brake fluid anywhere then the chances are its the master cylinder seal and all your brake fluid is in your servo. Its definatly not the servo as this only assists the brake effort and doesnt make up part of the hydraulic system. I've had this happen to me and its not pleasent when you hit the stop pedal and nothing happens.

I have got a day off Wednesday so I will take a good look then, it does sound like it may be something simple like a split hose or a dodgy seal. I think I will take this as an oppurtunity to overhaul the brakes completely, new braided hoses (goodridge), grooved discs and some Greenstuff pads, it's running double the power it came from the factory with and I'm planning the get the Pinto tuned up to at least 150BHP ;D "I've had this happen to me and its not pleasent when you hit the stop pedal and nothing happens." It was interesting to say the least I was only a mile from my house when they went completey and they went fairly slowly thank god! Cheers for the help guys

u might wanna find out where that brake fluid has got too, if its on any painted part of ur car then it wont stay painted for very long!!

aim for something cheap!! ;D hyundais are useful for stopping runaway cars .
