today i was having lunch at work and heard a burbling behind me, imediatly i reconsied it as some kinda flat engine, and took a guess at a scooby, and sure enough, there was a black bug eye estate just parking up behind me.
this got me thinking, why does a generic flat 4 sound any different that a v4, or a strait 4? is it all down to the fact that the exhausts are of different configuations? but then you could make a strait 4 sound like a flat 4 by changing the length of the primarys, so thats not very likly.
or is it just down to the strength of the blocks and the way they resionate?
So, come on guys, why doesnt a v4 sound like a strait 4?
Discuss!

I believe the characteristic scooby sound is due to unequal length downpipes on the exhaust manifolds.
Firing order plays a part in the melody too.

I believe the characteristic scooby sound is due to unequal length downpipes on the exhaust manifolds. Exactly right! A chavaru sh1trezza with equal length down pipes sounds like any other flat 4 rather than an off beat mess. Engine sounds are down to which order the gasses are expelled in and exhaust length/bore and and shape

scooby flat four is a boxer engine thats where the distinct sound comes from along with the unequal pipes but the boxer 4 has a distinct sound but the scooby has its own as does the beatle ect. but its not the only type of engine that has a distinct sound some engines of the same type have their own distinct sound be it SOHC or OHV take a pinto or a crossflow for instance both have a sound all of their own

all engines have a sound of their own IMO, I'm not saying i can name loads of engines by their sound, but theres a fair few cars i can name when they drive pass without even looking at them. its mainly cars ive had alot of contact with eg minis, golfs, transits, fiesta, suzuki swifts, astra the list goes on.

The scooby sounds the way it does becuase of the very poor stock exhaust manifold, the unequal lengths mean the exhaust pulses reach the turbo like this ||-|| if it has a equal length manifold the pulses will reach the turbo like this |-|-|-| The flat four firing sequence does make a different sound to a straight four, but this is empasised by the poor manifold. If a straight four engine has a manifold that is a 4-2-1 configuration and the pipes are joined 1&2 and 3&4 then it will sounds weird this is a good example of an engine that should sound different - video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3566399109857676893&q=hayabusathat should sound like a hayabusa, it dosent! And thats poor manifold design! J

A Scooby sounds like an Alfa boxer lump. Not surprising considering that Subaru effectively copied the Alfa design. I never did find out why an Alfa boxer 'crackles' on the over-run.
The Alfa boxer is my favourite sounding engine of all - closely followed by the 'big bang' Honda V4 bike lumps. They sound like a machine gun on full throttle at low to mid revs and scream like nothing else when you hit 10k rpm. Lovely.

The crackle from the alfa lump will be becuase of the fuel available on overrun from the carbs, the subaru will have fuel cutoff on overrun. I too love the honda V4 lumps, especially the VFR400, screaming pulsing crazyness. And did someone say three cylinder? Oh the charade engine was ace, i miss that sound so much, it was like half a skyline! Some vids for the sound - video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-250279575414711013&q=gttiThis one is really quick, check it out having an E30 M3! video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-5666038346722001308&q=gttiSkip to about half way through this one for some awsone wastegate chatter video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=4117728550631024395&q=charade+turboAnything that alters the way the exhaust pulse will make the car sound different, thats why rotary engines sound crazy, no valves etc makes for one very loud exhaust note. Changing the cam will change the way the exhaust pulse behaves when its let out and how fast it is released, again this is why ported rotaries go BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP! J

My dad loves the sound of flats so much that, not contented by his Impreza, he bought a brand new BMW R1200GS bike.
Actually I think it was coincidence, but still, I love being woken up at 7am by the warbling of subaru or the burbling of the beemer.

I like the sound of the Volvo 5 cylinder on the 850, like a whirring burble. Also like the noise of modern Merc Diesels, are these 5 cylinder too??

Oh the charade engine was ace, i miss that sound so much, it was like half a skyline! Well, my Alfa had Bosch KE-Jetronic. Might not have had a fuel cut-off due to it's age, though. Fiat Lampredi lumps sound nice, as do old Alfa TSparks. Not so sure about the newer 16v TSparks, though. Not forgetting my Fiat Marea with it's crazy 5 cylinder lump. That made me grin every time I drove it.
