Anyone been to this museum? Its in Keswick, in the lake district. www.carsofthestars.com/Its decent entertainment for an hour or so, thats about the best rating I can give it i'm afraid. However it has always fascinated me because I have never understood how so many of the worlds most famous motors have ended up there. Stuff like SEVERAL original batman cars, an original KITT 2000, BTTF Deloreans, loads of cars from James bond films etc.... These cars must be worth an absolute fortune, i mean sums which I just cannot imagine. Stuff which would be top billing at one of those posh US car auctions reported on in 'Classic + Sportscar'. Yet they are all in this fugging museum in Keswick which charges £4 to enter. They only have a tiny number of recreations, 99% of the exhibits are original. And they are not on loan either - the museum owns them all. How on earth does this museum pay its way? I don't understand it. The guy who set it up and runs it, I thought he was a dentist, but according to their website he was a 'Keswick painter and sculptor'. Anyway now look whats on the bay: The museum's 'back-up collection': 20 world famous cars for sale as a lot, opening price £400k, being sold off by a law office by the looks of it. Anyone know any more than me? cgi.ebay.co.uk/Batman-Knightrider-James-Bond-Unique-Car-Collection_W0QQitemZ330032949743

I've always wondered how ANY smallish museum makes any money/stays afloat to be honest. There's the Mouldsworth one near us that always has me pondering: www.mouldsworthmotormuseum.com/events.htmI went to that one in the Lakes about ten years ago, wasn't much to it then tbh, guess it might be worth going back for a look now though!

great idea for a museum, he's got one in Edinburgh as well and a travelling version that I saw in cornwall, only problem is he's banned all photography of the cars

I know! Lots of museums survie of fundraising events, infrequent injections of charity cash, lottery grants, and by having exhibits on loan and bequeathed to them in wills etc. But this one doesn't seem to bother with any of that! It buys all its stuff outright, restoring it if necessary. And, it is 'continually searching for new and interesting exhibits particularly James Bond cars and memorabilia'.

A-ha!
"You can hire any Cars of the Star vehicle from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to Del Boys three wheeler. If you have a promotional event, car show, or just a special occassion which you feel would benefit by the presence of 'a star' then please feel free to contact us. Vehicle hire can be from one day to serveral months if required. Typical prices start from £500 per day plus transport upto £1500 for the latest Batmobile."
Very much doubt that includes thrashing the hell out of it up and down the M1, though.

Sadly, in the bygone days when I read Autoexpress [shakes head] I remember reading about the moustachioed little man that set this up - must have been the late 80s I reckon. You can guess what one of his first exhibits was .... A Trotter 3 wheeler van and I think Roland Rats's 100E aswell, random memory that I have. I thought back then, as a 9 year old Grifter riding, C64 playing geek that it wouldn't last and it appears, somewhat later that it hasn't!!
Darren might know the old museum that was tucked away in Lark Lane in Liverpool - that was a great place but sadly its vanished and has been turned into some sort of wine bar...

Yeah, Lark Lane motor museum, I have pics of that in a box somewhere! I seem to remember a Ferrari Dino in there amongst other things. I was in that very bar a few weekends ago, every time I'm in Lark Lane I wish the museum were still there

Ha ha - me too.
I've just had a look at that Cars of the Stars website - what a pile of tripe, I think it was designed when the net was run by beardy weirdies. Some of the photos are making me cross. The Renault 11 is just one of the many stunt cars. I'd have lied, stuck the special TXE "Electric" badges and wheeltrims on and said it was the actual car!! I think then it wouldn't be shutting up shop - details, details...

The best thing about the Cars of the Stars website is that for such a huge operation it is hosted on someone's personal AOL webspace, very professional!

I thought I read some months ago that the Scottish branch was closing? Anyhow, it is a somewhat bizzare museum but is kept company in Keswick by the Pencil Museum.

I go to Keswick quite often (every couple of months or so) and I have never been to the museum. I always park in the car park next to it but nearly every time I go there its closed Will get in to see it one day.

I still can't understand how the Grand Prix museum at Donnington makes any money - there must be millions and millions of pounds worth of race cars in there but when I went in I was the only person! The McLaren hall is impressive - just a long line of Marlboro liveried cars, plus in a different room they've got a 6 wheel Tyrrel

TBH, I don't think it's about making money. I wouldn't be surprised if most of these places are actually little more than someone's private collection, which they are kind enough to make available for public viewing rather than keeping it hidden away.

I believe Cars Of The Stars is owned by a guy who's main profession is in dentistry.
I don't know if museums are run as businesses or what, I would have thought things like insurance are expensive.
