my junior has no stereo, and normally the engine and exhaust are enjoyment enough to listen to. but for the occasional longer trip I could really do with some sounds.
the way I see this is 2 music sources, either use one or other or both. 500gb external shockproof harddrive packed full of tunes connected to something via a usb or motorola mb525defy phone with limited 32gb of tunes, with good poweramp app music controller software, and google navigator satnav function. sound could be emitted via bluetooth or via micro usb socket on the side, held in place with window mount.
with these 2 sources, how could I go about getting tunes in the car without a headunit or a mess of cables, as the dash is mint, and theres no centre consol. I have retrofitted a fag lighter just under the glovebox to power the motorola when I need its sat nav function.

Wire sticking out the dash plugs into my phone which feeds in the low input in a four channel amp all hidden and sounds good to boot.

all you need is a switch on the "remote" to turn the amp on and its just like wiring an amp to a stereo

the hard drive would have to be connected to something that could 'read' it. and that would have to be a computer, or a head unit with usb 'in' go with the phone option, I doubt you'd be driving long enough in one sitting to listen to 32gig of MP3s

Doesn't your phone have a headphone jack?
I'm pretty sure you could make a usb to rca cable yourself pretty easily, not very expensive to give it a go.

Headphone to phono cable the phone will treat the cable out as headphones.
that would give you an input for an amp to run.
I'd run an inline line driver or similar to control the volume to save playing with the phone.

I had an amp under the seat powering a couple of speakers that were fitted to the van already, a little switch to turn it on and off, and a connector to turn RCA to headphone and job done. I'll be making a custom box with the amp enclosed to fit over the trans tunnel in the back of the Escort, and this will run off of a fused cable from the battery in the boot!

This is exactly what I have done in the Triumph, very similar to the others. Vibe Lite 4 channel amp mounted out of site, under passenger side glove compartment. Mounted on bespoke brackets to ensure some air flow around the amp. 2 Speakers mounted in kick panels - no way of avoiding securely fixing speakers I don't think Phono lead connected to Line In on Amp, routed through existing hole in dash, where you can then plug your Phone/MP3 player through the headphone socket. Toggle switch to power amp. Only thing missing so far has been an in car charger for the phone to keep the tunes alive, and no cigarette lighter, and didn't want to fit one either because they are clumsy with a charger in. Which is why I ordered this yesterday - www.windingroads.co.uk/shop/product.php/402/motorcycle-usb-charging-socket/557e5039d37ae4f77cfd4cdc14957344In this pic you can see one of the speakers, the toggle switch next to the heater above the centre tunnel and the phono lead hanging down (which I hadn't fed back through that time) Amp completely out of site.

There's no reason you couldn't remove the casing from the car charger part of this and wire a fused live and an earth strait to it to do the same job, although not quite a neatly. (although it would be easy enough to cut a slot in a small panel to mount the USB port, and the rest would be out of sight). I'm with the other guys on this, the easiest way will be to just use the headphone socket on the phone feeding strait to an amp. Although there may well be a way to use the usb socket on the phone to connect up and charge at the same time, but like the HDD you'd need something to decipher the signal.

Nice piece of kit! However, not all chargers are bulky. If the phone / mp3 player etc has a usb cable, then one of these flush mounted usb chargers can be used in the cigarette lighter.

I installed a Parrot 9200 (i think) kit into the car and found it works without using the stereo at all, even has its own internal amp!
So it has a small removable screen, and remote control, plugs into the iphone, 3.5mm jack, usb and streams via bluetooth as well.
So you could have literally the little screen on display, use the remote and it will charge, play your iphone and anythnig else you have, plus hands free too!

I've fitted a fair few of the parrot 9200 jobbies - if you don't want a HU plonked somewhere, the little removable colour screen is very unobtrusive! Good little quality units too

Good little quality units too if they werent quite so expensive I would have put one in some sort of casing with a battery and speakers to make a portable unit, but I think i could buy a cheap one and rip it apart instead!

Headunit in the boot with the front pannel mounted in the sun visor? If you have a USB headunit, all you need to do then is run a flushmount usb port to the front of the car. Cant get much more stealth than that without risking getting a fine for touching your phone while on the move.

Sorry wasnt mine that, principle is easy though, you just run wires from the main unit conectors to the front panel conectors and your in business.

Oh I like the sunvisor idea. Perhaps you could take the whole front panel off the headunit, so the front panel is still detachable from the visor. Might need another one for the actual head unit though...
