...why I want to get rid of my perfectly reliable daily driver VW and replace it with some ropey old Ford which is at the other end of the country, needs its fuel tank cleaning out, and has no heater and no MOT, in winter.
Is my life not hard enough already? Is there some insane masochism which makes us do this stuff. Is it just me?

Because you've failed to lower the Passat. Lower the Passat and enjoy being a retro-water-cooled scenester for a while.

Ford with no heater means it must be pre-105E Anglia. Pre-105E Fords prone to rust in tanks = Pop, upright Anglia, C or Y.
TELL ME IT'S TRUE, AKKU! ;D
Oh, and I rhymed. I win the internet.

it has a heater, just that someone has removed the pipes, presumably due to the heater leaking...

Must be the season to buy fords then Someone is driving across the country to hopefully buy my Cortina. You can't be him though as mine does have a heater and a non rusty fuel tank I think its going to a good home, he lives just down the road from (insert name here) Capri specialists. Sorry the name passes me but they're in Dartford and are very well known. In fact I think I feel slightly ashamed I cant remember.

(I gather you are skint from what you have posted in recent months?!) Look at things in a logical sense, if you have no money, you can't afford to fix a rust bucket up anyway, so you may aswell stick with the reliable daily driver. Get in a bad enough financial mess and you could end up with no driver at all, let alone a roof over your head.

I saw an interview with Hugh Laurie where he said he's only happy when he knows he's heading toward melancholy.
I myself am reflecting on how I manage to effectively 'ruin' every car I buy.

I'm guessing you're missing that thrill of completing a journey without the fear of a likely breakdown?

Because you've failed to lower the Passat. Lower the Passat and enjoy being a retro-water-cooled scenester for a while. +1. its probably something to do with the horrendous amount of untapped potential leaking out of it all over your drive..........make it low, rim it up, bask in the glory or having created something cool. its as good as the 'ive jsut bought something new' feeling, and then some.

If it's a road trip with some spannering at the end that you need, but want to save yourself the cap-ex of a curse word old car, maybe you could just find a decent scrappy four hundred miles away and visit that?

Don't be bringing your common sense round here Buy the cold old Ford. Break it down into its component parts, pinch a load of scaffolding from a building site and knock up a set of lifesize Airfix nets. Then dance around in a flower-print sou'wester, smoking a bubble-gum pipe and singing 'the bees, the bees!' Wibble.
