We are not amused at all! looks like the 1600 is going back in on top of everything else I have to do. Hey ho though, never mind. Few more piccies, still dummying up but now with a shiny not bent bumper!! Hopefully new engine coming over the week end! Yay!!! Have some piccies of today play!!! Frankie

What a curse word about the engine! Least you've got it repaired though. Good time for an upgrade? Zetec?

Well, that's the other engine in, got to sort the fuel pump out as it is not drawing fuel through. Bloody thing!! Big push to get it finished now. Get the remaining welding done, get the front end in primer at least and mot it. Pictures show the engine in last night, and during the putting back together today. will take more tomorrow.

It's alive!!! Fuel pump was broken and not drawing fuel. Good job I checked the cam timing too, was 180 out!
Let the welding commence!

Whole front end now finished and welded up. Will be changing the upper mid section in due course. Cortina will be pressed into service sooner than expected due to Maria's saxo being written off and the need for two cars. Piccies to follow. It's not perfect but I am pleased with it so far. Just have to do a patch in the boot then it's ready for the dreaded m.o.t! Going to get the front in primer intially but it should be all painted ready for symonds yat.

Bit more progress, Changed the carb back to the twin choke, and tuned the engine, Welded up the boot, Rubbed down the wing and bonnet, Double checked the welding on the front end, Primed the slam panel, wing and half the bonnet. (Ran out of primer GRRRR!!!) Booked in for MOT for the 12th To do! Adjust headlamps, Fix horn, New connection on oil pressure switch, Check under neath (just to be sure) Fit new number plate (15.99 from halfords! robbing b'stards) Replace one wiper blade! Refit centre console and radio, Bloody good clean!! Why do engines always sound worse on video!! this one is lovely and quiet really!

Had its MOT on Saturday and joy of joys, FAILED!!! I always check the ball joints on the front end every year along with everything else. Always grease them up as they are still the original ones with the grease nipples. What did I forget to do? Check them this year!! So it failed! Grrrrr!!!!!! Still, 18 pound later, half hour work and job done! retest this friday so fingers crossed!! then Tax, the steady test drive to make sure all is well. Awaiting pay day at the end of the month so I can get the front end in paint, reattach the front spoiler etc! then hunt for the spotlamps to replace the damaged one from the bash! Frankie

gutted to see the front end bent, expecially right after the prom/wedding photos? ! good on you for bringing it back to life.
depsite being hardcord vauxhall fan I do harbour some affection for the blue oval, my dad a mk2 cortina 1600E followed by a mk4 1600 L, followed by a 2.0 mk5 crusader in the champagne/brown scheme. uncle had a crusader estate in the same colours !
boggling to think how rare they are now and back then it was binned off with a rotten boot floor :/

Had the 2000 stripped down now, and the verdict is......not good! All main bearing were ok, no 2 and 3 big ends were ok! No 1 and 4 big ends however were wrecked big time!!! Bores measurements were way out of limits On doing a ring gap check with the old rings, the gap when fitted into the bores should be between 18thou and 23thou or something like that! mine were on 80thou!!! (sure thats what Matt said) even with new standard rings the ring gap when fitted into the bores were about 30 thou! thats top and middle of the bore. (sure thats what Matt said) The engine was running standard sized pistons! There was much bearing metal deposited in the block from said big ends, even blocking the bearing oil feed to the big ends!! but only on 1 and 4 cylinder. Valve guide seals had risen up the valves on no4 piston. when the oil was dumped out prior to stripping, it was very thin and stank like someone had filled the sump up with petrol rather than oil!
Going to measure up the block and check out the crank on the other 2000 that I have had for years to see if its viable to repair that one instead and use this one as a nice boat anchor!

Hi Steve! Yeah, it's good to be able to drive it again. Did feel for you when yours got banged up. Glad you were ok. Does shake you up a bit! I shall look forward to hearing the progress on yours when you return home. Don't give up on it mate, good old tools are cortinas. Are you keeping the 24V or changing it back to a pinto? Think I read that it was what you are going to do. Stay safe mate! Give me a shout if you need a hand with it.

Got it taxed now too! Would have been nice to have had it painted first but we need to have it back on the road! Still, got a week or so off in a fortnight so I shall paint it and get the stripes etc back on then.

Well, managed to get some paint on it yesterday. now we have to spend some time flatting it back then polish it up! See how it comes out after that. hopefully it will come out alright, won't be perfect I know, but thats what you get doing it on a budget. Frankie
