That Merc is a joke - "During those 23 years, the owner rotated two spare engines in with the car's original motor a total of 11 times." The Volvo P1800 has only had one engine rebuild, at 800,000 & has covered 1.2 million since then! ;D

I just stumbled across this Daimler DS420 for sale on ebay. Its last failed MOT details welding needed and a smoky engine that's probably not long for this world. Given the general condition of the car vs. mileage, I would suggest it has almost certainly been restored at some point during its 36 year existence; Who knows how many engines or engine rebuilds this elegant old gal might have had to clock up more than 860,000 miles? (And I thought I'd revive this 14 year old thread to boot!)

I've had a few high mileage cars, but not as high as the above. You will notice a theme -Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 : It was on its 2nd 'box (original went at 130k), but the engine was untouched when I scrappred it at 387k. I only scrapped it as the 'box went again ; diff teeth went -Volvo 740 ; On 212 on the speedometer; I do wonder if it was 160k ; that had a semi-shot 'box as dollywobbler can confirm -Mondeo 2.5 V6 5 speed auto ; This was my dad's but I used it alot! The car didn't seem right when my dad bought it at 113k but he did love a bargain. It had between then and 281k another 'box (driveshaft teeth were stripped within it), 2 driveshafts, another engine, and basically an entire new cooling system over that time ; the cooling system was why the original engine failed -Mercedes W124 300D : I bought that on 294k from Tepper of this Parish. It wasn't a bad car but it had shoddy owners prior to Tepper, which he was very honest about. None of that seemed to be touched. It's now on 310k with a loving owner -2007 Mondeo 1.8 : That car had the head rebuilt at 208k due to VSR. It had new shocks fitted at some time too. Besides that, it just kept on working very well. We sold that at 325k. If I didn't have the BMW E36 323i at the time (or rather if I had sold it), I'd have bought that car from my dad. Madness I know, but I just didn't gel with the 323i, and that was a car many BMW fans would spaff over (manual, 2.5, 130k, 2 owner car). It's funny, alot of cars I've had were better than many lower mileage brethren (and to the cost of perspective buyers) as follows: -944 Turbo had 190k when I sold it. Alot of buyers gave it a wide berth. But it had alot going for it. It was a 250 model, with KWv3s all round, fully rebushed down to the subframe bushes which are always neglected, new Big Black brakes all round , basically a brand new head on it, Michelin PS2s all round, and a new dashboard. One chap who offered me £4k for that in 2014 bought one with 80k less for £11k. That example had a cracked dash (they all do that), and it cost him an engine rebuild due to the bores being shot, and a full suspension overhaul, despite a Porsche 'mate' telling him the car was amazing. Similar for the M3 ; it's now n 149k and rising. The Mondeo is not what people would call low at 183k either.

Highest mileage I know of without attention was a 504 diesel pickup which blew up at just over 500k when trying to shift a 7.5t wagon off the M1. That 504 was thrashed mercilessly round multiple depots but was serviced regularly and never run low on oil.

I remember reading something about 20 years ago; it was being recognised as a UK record at that time, a business was running a VW Golf II panel van with the 1.9 litre non-turbo Diesel. It had just clocked up half a million miles with just standard servicing and 7 replacement clutches. It was still going strong. Many years before that I encountered a Rolls-Royce 20/25hp at a car show in Margam. I recall being told that it had covered a vast mileage, with 'million' being mentioned, (?1 million / 2 million?). It had accomplished this with 8 'engine overhauls'.

At risk of sounding like a right nerd here but the official Volvo high mileage club has some absolutely eye watering mileages registered on there. A lot of them being UK driven volvo estates which is cool to see.
My current '99 Volvo V70 estate is on a tiny 162k, but will run her until she cant anymore!

1991 EA Falcon wagon, bought late in '04 with 386,000 km on the odo and a fresh head rebuild cos it cooked itself between test drive and taking delivery. Rebuilt the trans at 387,000 cos it shat itself in spectacular fashion on Boxing Day '04 right after we'd done a 250 km road trip on Christmas day. Thrashed hard and never serviced apart from trans oil changes it had 463,000 on the odo when I crashed it in the winter of '08. 1989 EA Falcon wagon bought to replace the aforementioned '91. Shat the trans (wouldn't reverse) at 449,000. 1990 EA Falcon wagon bought to replace the aforementioned '89. Odo stopped counting at 295943 end January '18. Still dailying it including a 5000 km road trip in Jan/Feb '19 and several other long trips. Anybody's guess what the actual mileage on it is now. 1990 BG Laser. My wife's daily. Bought sight unseen for $1200 with 258,000 km on the odo, collected and delivered to us (1600 km) by my eldest son. Never serviced during our ownership it had the head off (our mechanic believes for the first time) at 447,000 due to a burnt valve. Amazingly little lip on the bores so it just got the head rebuilt. Cost $2000 all up to fix but I think it was the right thing to do as it's not rusty and we could easily have spent the same money to buy another old car with a list of problems we didn't know about including worn out things we've already replaced on this one. Think it has about 462,000 on it now. Still goes hard for what it is.

1996 Audi A6 (C4) 2.5 TDI. I’ve owned it from 2003 and know the previous owners. Currently on 332k miles. Engine is is original and untouched apart from normal servicing and 1 set of injector nozzles. Gearbox is original and untouched apart from a couple of oil changes. Clutch, exhaust, starter and alternator are original. Has had a lot of suspension parts and quite a few wheel bearings, though one of the rears is still original. Body getting a little tatty, but it only gets the occasional wash. Needs suspension bushes (again!) including rear beam and handbrake cables. Nick Instant lowering, mostly at the rear, courtesy of 330 kgs of tractor weights used for another project

Just one mechanical mishap to report, Managed to ping the LH spring pan off the strut…. Resulting in instant lowering of that corner and lots of smoke from the pan rubbing on the tyre. As you can see this was corrosion induced and pretty much impossible to see beforehand. The other side wasn’t far behind. Luckily I was aware they’re a failure point and had got spares in (from Eastern Europe, they are NLA new) so it was off the road long. The original turbo is just about done. I have the parts…. Just working up the courage to tackle it. It’s survived another three seasons of the Woolbridge 12 Car rally series bringing its total seasons competed to something like 16. Just done a 1300 mile toad trip to Yorkshire and Northumberland without problems @57mpg average. Did we’d ish the AC still worked while stuck in traffic on the way home - the only warm day in the whole two weeks!

At the other end of the scale my 'lightweight' Rover 75 internally combusted its internal combustion engine at just 54K miles . . Lightweight? Well it was by the time I scrapped it, as so many bits had fallen off over the years . . .

Not been logged on in a long while, but a perfect time to return. Might not be the highest of mileages, but my Austin A35 is 'likely' on 242,000 miles with its original 950 A-Series engine, rebuilt once. The reason I say likely is because it's a 5 digit odometer, but when it joined the family as scrap in the late 70s it had only 70,000 miles the clock but it was in a very bad way (so presuming it was actually 170,000) Since then, it's been a daily driver for both my dad and then me, and during my ownership I've done another 45,000 miles in it without much trouble. Off-the road and no update in a long while as it needs a restoration on the body. But it's been 40 years since the last bodywork was done. Once it's back, it'll be back to high mileage duties.
