My mk2 granny has 186K on it, ive got all old mots so ts definatly genuine. It had done nearly 70K by its first mot. My volvo 740 isnt far behind at 178K.
It is definatly the way the car is used and looked after that helps them survive so long, even down to keeping the body/underside clean to stop it rusting. Trouble is once cars get a bit older and worth less that sort of servicing etc tends to go out the window!
My mate used to work on taxis in the early 80s and looked after an early 70s austin cambridge that did almost 400K before rust claimed it! It was only ever switched off for fuel stops and servicing as the car had several drivers, so as one went home the next went straight out in it again! My uncle had a mk4 cortina estate that got to 300K before dieing from terminal rot and ending up sold to some gypsies who stripped it bare and left the shell in a field!
I also had a J reg E36 BMW that had done 170K but was utterly screwed. The interior was badly worn and falling apart, paint was awful, rust was taking hold on the boot, and arches and the engine was tapping and rattling badly. I managed to sell it on pretty easily but I expected it to have fared better than it had to be honest. I suppose it hadnt been looked after particularly well earlier on in life.

just tried working out the number of revolutions that volvo engine has made, if you take that mileage and assume an average of about 40 mph and about 2500 rpm it works out at about 10 billion times !!! A lot of assumptions but with such large numbers it going to be an incredible amount, I can't believe that 2.6 million on one rebuild is possible. I've worked in engineering for a long time and can not see this is possible the simple matter of metal erosion due to combustion would destroy the valve and seats long before that sort of mileage. There must have been a lot more work than disclosed to that car.

I don't know why but I never think of older cars racking up big high mileage like modern cars do. This reminds me of that documentary that was filmed in the early 90s about sales reps... anyone remember it?

My daily has done 237,000 & believed to still be in its first clutch (although it is about ready) Starlets have only done 11,800 (5 digit clock, so have no idea really) & 180,000 on my mk3.

My V6 155 had over 200k on it when I sold it..... at least 60k by me. Not epic numbers, but really high for a 155!

Herearound 400 - 500k km's is not unusual on 80's cars, and finding a 124 or 123 that's done under 400 is more of a challenge than finding one with over a million ;D
My 190 has 480km on the clock, and the original engine still goes quite well, i've changed the gearbox though. I also had a 500km dohc sierra, best car i've owned and probably the quickest stock sierra i've driven.

I once owned a Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 with 390,000 miles on the clock. When I came to look for a replacement not many of them drove alot better if any better!
The owners and the maintenance IMO account for more than the mileage. FWIW that car had 2 diffs die in it (first died at 113k, second (why I scrapped it) at 390k), and the engine was completely untouched bar servicing on the dot with the recommended oils and good antifreeze (Ford's 10 year stuff). Compared to its replacement I still think I should have changed the diff... I think that engine is still going strong in another Mondeo (Amazingly I managed to sell it quite easily).
The Green Mondeo I sold with 283k, which drove better than when I bought it on 112k, but it was a bodged up car when I bought it (read seriously overheated in the past (we live and learn).
FWIW, a Volvo 740 2.3i I bought with 150k drove better and bar a rotting body was actually a better performer (MPG, pulling power, drive etc.) than a 2.0i I bought previously.
Truth be told, bar the Stag and the 106 (on 109k) pretty much every car on the drive/list is above 170k...

most of the cars in my family are high millage! mums 2001 Volvo v40 diesel is 190k, dads 2002 Skoda Octavia diesel is 180k and sisters citroen c3 diesel is nearing the 250k mark!
My 1979 Hiace is on 230k but the engine number relates to a 1978 Toyota celica so obviously has been changed at some point.

I feel left out, my Dolly is only on 58k, though it has been sat lifeless for at least 6 years in it's 33 year life. Though it is on it's second engine, couldn't get the head off the original one, it's still sat in the garden.

I ran a 6 year old Cortina MKIV 1.6L estate up to around 110,000 miles before selling to a friend who lives abroad. Many years later he decided to move it from storeage to his farm 600 miles away. Took a while to get running (and clouds of smoke) but it managed the trip without problems despite having done by then 250,000 miles. I changed the clutch, water pump, starter and rear axle (CROWNwheel bolt came loose and punched a hole though the cover on the motorway thus I had to complete the trip home with it dry and therefore knackered) otherwise it's original with head never comming off nor cam changed. Friend used to have a taxi firm that used just Cortina's so knows the secret for Pinto's long life is regular oil changes.
Paul H BTW the Cortina is still 100% rot free as I fully rustproofed and it now lives next to a MKIII Cortina 2000E in France.

This reminds me of that documentary that was filmed in the early 90s about sales reps... anyone remember it? From what I gather it was owned from new by the owner of a signwriting/printing works. So I assume it must have been his rep mobile aswell as his main car. It had a private plate on it too, DPC was the end I think, which was the initials of the company (also the initials of the first owner). Most of the invoices for servicing etc were made out to this company. Interestingly the original auto box was wasted early on at about 20K so had a new one put in, so its not all original but even so that box has still done some miles! I have a mk2 transit from the opposite end of the scale too, its only done 18K from new, and never been off the road!

I am a Taxi driver so have drove a few high milers. My first company taxi a cavalier diesel was on 275,000miles when it was taken out of service and then used by the bosses mother for 2 years after. I then had a 2001 tddi mondeo which went to 295,000 with just 1 new clutch and flywheel and the diesel pump went but only serviceable items apart from that. If you drive with care without thrashing the car and service without fail a car will do high milage quite easily. I have my own taxi now a 2003 vectra 1.8 petol lpg which is on 167,000 at the min and drives as good as when I brought it on 95,000. Only big stuff to go so far was a clutch and a gearbox.

Hi
My 106 diesel had 166k on the clock and drove like brand new. It had 70k on the clock when I bought it and 166k when I sold it, 24k a year is not too bad in a 106. The guy who bought it off me lived in Latvia and drove it home.
I think what has been said about maintenance is true mine had oil changes every 5/6k and 2 new cam-belts and that was it. It had done 166k+ on the original clutch, and anything it wanted was changed... but it never wanted anything.
My Dad also had an old Merc truck a few years ago with just shy of 1/2 million miles on it, was going strong until he rolled it.

some years back i bought a 205 diesel with 187.000 miles on it, i drive that car hard most of the time and never had a problem with it at all, sold it to my ex and even she could not kill it and thats saying alot ( car killer) ;D after that i bought a 205 diesel with 60.000 miles on it but it was so slow i sold it on, maybey it was not as run in as the other one ? i had a Volvo 850 T5 which i bought with 235.000 miles on it, only thing i had to do on that was change the rad because the oilcooler was inside it and i had oil forcing itself out off the expansion bottle which when it first happend was quite alarming ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) i sold the Volvo the Skinnylew of here and he loved it as much as i did, it would do twice the limit on private roads of course with no problem at all, Volvo built a fantastic engine in the T5.

A works car that’s used to ferry people from Manchester to Gatwick pretty much everyday for my old mans work covered 500k in a couple of years! think it was a merc people carrier. my highest mileage was an A6 1.8 petrol on 195k and I think the OP mentioned my old mans 1.8 Passat on 287k. Only blew up because he forgot a cam belt change.

My daily W124 300CE has done 187K miles now, but with a full MB S/H it feels like it's barely done 40K. Maintenance is the key ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
