A very good friend of mine bought a brand new Mk4 Golf GT TDi PD 130 in 2001 and I took it for a spin when it had less than 100 miles on the clock. He had it serviced and maintained religiously, mostly at the main stealer - He lives in Suffolk, and at the time, he worked in Devon so it racked up the miles on the motorway at the weekends. Fast forward nine years and 135,000 miles later and I snapped his arm off when he offered it to me a year ago.
It has a much easier life with me, about 6k a year, but it is totally reliable (with the exception of a broken window regulator), still does 60mpg on a gentle run and looks better inside and out than most cars half it's age/mileage.

mum's 94 405 td estate is on 305k, only swapped the engine at 299k because the HG failed epically, fountains form the expansion tank. bloody thing had had an untraceable leak for some time so I wasn't surprised when it did go, dropped in a 130k mile 93 306 td engine and box, but used the original 405 fuel pump and turbo! she bought it ten years ago on 170k for £1200. seven digit mileages is commonplace on trucks and large vans we used to do 6 week inspections and services on our busiest trucks when I worked in haulage.

Interesting point of reference: the moon is about 240,000 miles away. Some of you guys should be measuring mileage in moon trips.
This thread is just what I needed to read. I'm looking at a modern Benz diesel with relatively high mileage (tiny in comparrison to some of these intergalactic cruisers) and everyone is telling me I'm mad to consider such a high mileage car.
My personal high mileage record is putting 110k on a Ford Ka. I bought it new (sorry, I'll do a penance thread if you want) and ran it for five years. Most of the mileage was business mileage so I'm sure I made a few quid out of it. Mechanically, it was tip top when I sold it but the central locking, leccy windows, radio, heater etc. were all knackered.

I picked up a Volvo T5 auto estate with 215,000 miles on it and took it up to 221,000 in a few months before selling it on Would love to have a car that long to see it go through several hundred thousand miles, imagine the memories, I'd never ever get rid of it!!

My daily is an Audi A6 (C4) 2.5TDI (That's the I5 engine) now on 228K. Original clutch and exhaust apart from the cat which blocked up and got weighed in. Has had very few new parts apart from maintenance items and still drives perfectly well. Actually it seems to go better than ever and is certainly more economical now than when I got it over 100k back - must be finally run-in! Proper maintenance, especially oil changes and reasonably sympathetic use helps long life. Also long haul use. Consider: car 1 has done 200k mainly motorway miles average speed over the life of the car 50 mph - hours run 4000 car 2 has done only 100k but short haul with lots of in town work, average speed 25 mph - hours run also 4000. And this car has probably had more cold starts, more gear changes, more use of brakes, clutch, even door handles..... The crappiest cars I've had have been low mileage ones so I just choose high mileage ones with good history now Nick

My GTA has an indicated 129k on the clock, is on its third engine rebuild, each time from cambelt failure by the looks of it... but that appears to be about the limit of the work done on it.
We sold a 2002 Dodge Ram in 2009 with 347k on it, still ran like a clock.
The wife has put 23k on the car in the past 12 months too. 17 months old with 32k on it lol
It's easy to burn away the miles down here.

We bought our 1.6 KJ Ford Laser (Mazda 323) new in 1997. It just racked up 400,000 km a couple of weeks ago. It's been a bloody awesome car.

Bought my mk3 Polo GT on 162k and it's now on 173k and going strong throughout daily duties.
I want to take it to 200k but i have never owned a car for longer than 15k miles (usually get bored after a year or so!).

my polo g40 is on 157k, don't think its ever had a head gasket on it. not sure the clutch has even been changed! my mx5 is on 155k, use it every day, been really reliable. over heated once due to a fault thermostat. my polo gt is on 140k. havent used it as yet, but it does run. mileage has never really worried me.

It is amazing how many people mileage does worry.
A friend of mine dismissed many cars over 100k yet bought a 32,000 mile 2000 Rover 416. It still needed a clutch (the old one was in a very bad way), and the tyres pretty much were all poor. Another friend thought she would get top money for her Ka because it was 'low mileage' despite the fact that the sills had been patched to Kingdom Come with a very rattly engine to top it off.
Cars do need use to keep them going well and a rigorous maintenance regime.

I used to have a Renault 19 oil burner that did the best part of 200k, I thought that was pretty good but I'm not quite so proud having read this. On the other hand, we've got some 56 plate MAN trucks at work that are double shifted, it's quite unusual to get in a cold one. They've mostly done between 1.1 and 1.2 million klicks and they're still going strong.

It's all about servicing I think - I had a DOHC Sierra for years than I ran from 82k to 168k without touching the engine other than for services.
I spoke to a taxi driver the other day about mileages with modern diesels, which often seem to pack up terminally long before the old lower powered under-stressed/over engineered ones did - his answer to this is to drill a small hole in the turbo casing to reduce the boost pressure, and his 370,000 mile Skoda is still on all the original bits.
