For a while my extensive collection of turbocharged headaches have made me crave something properly retro, and above all simple. And this is about as far back to my roots as I can go, as way back in the early 80s when I was 3 years old and my Dad had one as his first car! Yes you read that right, I remember my Dad buying his first car! He was a late starter when it came to motoring in his early 30s... On the other hand I was a petrolhead from day one, and I can remember a lot of good times from my first days around cars.... the very first being a V reg orange Chrysler Horizon. I hadn't been in the market for yet another car (really don't need one!), but I couldn't resist this one. 29k on the clock, mint and original throughout, and according to 'How many Left' one of only two taxed Chrysler Horizons still on the road! Well I checked it out when I was down in London working last week.... (in the dark!), and had a good think about it while I headed over to Paris for more work. Talking to mate Stuart, who also shares similar daft taste in old cars, we decided to half in on it and co-own a nice simple low 'n' slow project. So with Stuart heading down on the train to London, we met up, did the deal and headed back up the road...... It was a pretty long day travelling from Paris, via London and then up to Glasgow! Here it is at the Gretna services at 4am or something last night, just as the Horizon ticked over to the 30k mark! So future plans are pretty simple.... Get it low Find cool wheels in 4x98 (maybe wide steels, or something tarty, BBS/similar?) I have 4x98 17" Compmotive MOs, and black 16" Alfa Speedlines, but not sure they'd suit, or of the centre bore would be the same. Give it a good polish up. Replace the dead tailgate strut Silicone the headlight glass in that fell out within the first 100 yards of ownership ;D

I think this was displayed at the NEC last year, the lad had restored it beautifully and had loads of shots of the chronic rot it had in the rear inner wings. I think its super rare or maybe even unique in being a Chrysler rather than a Talbot.

lowering them is difficult, you need to get it on a four post ramp. then what i did was to use a big pair of stilsons with a scaff bar on them for more leverage. grip the stilsons on the splined part on the end of the torsion bar, then pull up on the stilsons to release the tension, it helps to have somebody to hold the stilsons up, or have a box that you can let it rest on. then you can winde the retaining nut off the retaining arm, then slowly let the stilsons down to release the tension, once your done that you should be able to slide the retaining arm off the end of the torsion bar, you might need to give it some persuasion with a hammer. once its off rotate the arm round a couple of teeth ( remember to make a mark on the arm so you know how many teeth you have rotated it). and then put it back together again hope this helps.

I remember I had to swap my Granada Ghia with my grandfather for a beige one of these when I lost my job! Fairplay it was immaculate as he was the second owner, the plastic was still on the seats when he had it! But, being an impatient 19 year old at the time I sold it as soon as I went back to work for something else,if only I hid it away somewhere for a few years, reg was A40 XWO

Haven't seen one of these for years. There were tons of Sunbeams & Horizons when I was a lad.
Looks like a great example.

What a peach. My dad had a blue t reg one (which replaced his s reg Chrysler alpine ) which he then upgraded to a very tasty black x reg ultra horizon model. Look after it!

I think this was displayed at the NEC last year, the lad had restored it beautifully and had loads of shots of the chronic rot it had in the rear inner wings. I think its super rare or maybe even unique in being a Chrysler rather than a Talbot. No, not the same one. This one has had paint, but I've seen pix from before and it only had tiny bits of rust! Not an amazing paintjob, but I think it should buff up quite nicely, as it looks like it never has been polished after the paint. lowering them is difficult, you need to get it on a four post ramp. then what I did was to use a big pair of stilsons with a scaff bar on them for more leverage. grip the stilsons on the splined part on the end of the torsion bar, then pull up on the stilsons to release the tension, it helps to have somebody to hold the stilsons up, or have a box that you can let it rest on. then you can winde the retaining nut off the retaining arm, then slowly let the stilsons down to release the tension, once your done that you should be able to slide the retaining arm off the end of the torsion bar, you might need to give it some persuasion with a hammer. once its off rotate the arm round a couple of teeth ( remember to make a mark on the arm so you know how many teeth you have rotated it). and then put it back together again hope this helps. Sounds like a headache! What are the sizes of the wheels in your pictures? And what are those steels from?

Did think that, but sure 15s would be better. The original 13s look tiny after all, so some extra diameter, along with some obvious extra width, should work nicely...

the silver 5 spokes are 16x7" with 205 45 16 tyres. then there are the ats cups which where 15x6.5" et28 and had 205 50 15 tyre ( 195 45or 50 would have been better), they fitted great and never rubbed. the steel wheels are wellers 13x7" with 185 55 13 tyres. something like 15x6.5" with et28 wheels would be best. i was naughty, all the wheels i had on it were 4x100 with woble bolts which i never had a problem with, i did this cus nice 4x98 wheels where hard to get hold of. theres much better choice of wheel if you use 4x100.
