For those who have read the 'Head count' thread, here's some info on the '33 Riley that I referred to. As it is at the moment: (Yes, that is a Volvo Amazon front wing and bumper on there..) See this link for what it should look like: www.pioneer-automobiles.co.uk/Riley%20Nine%20Monaco.html However, these are the current plans for it: ;D What do you all think?

Those top pics really are rat-look! Those plans of yours look great by the way, like a vintage Bugatti. Won't it be road legal though, I notice no lights?

Amazon,.. it was one of these that a friend of my dad owns (I believe he still has it): A (real) Riley TT Sprite.

I wish it would be ready by then, but nothing has happened in the last four years, except moving it around.... the tyres hold air, and the steering and handbrake work.
It is definately a long term project, as the original 1100cc 4cyl twin cam hemi has been dismantled, and thrown into a tea chest with another stripped engine. Even if we try to find a later (and intact) 1500cc it will still be very expensive to rebuild. I'd love to fit one of the Riley straight sixes, but they are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo, and also very expensive, as is an Autovia triple cam hemi V8 (basically a pair of Riley 1500cc engines, with the central cam shared as they are at the top of the block).
It will be done to VSCC regs, so that it can compete in their events, so there are tight eligibility restrictions.
The car will be road legal, but the lights and cycle wings aren't shown in those pics. BTW, the wheels are 19", and it's much lower than a Bugatti!

[drool] If his is the genuine article (and he can prove it - there are quite a few replicas, ie specials built to be like a TT Sprite), then even if it needs lots of work, it's still worth a lot of money... The main influences for my special are the Dixon Riley (but with the overslung chassis as it's much easier and cheaper): and this: The aims are low weight, low frontal area, that it looks like it could have been built in the 1930s and above all, that it looks good ;D

Cool. I didn't mean it was exactly like a Bugatti, I just meant that the pointy tail reminds me of a Mille Miliga Bugatti. It'll look great with the lights and cycle wings on. What colours are you going with?

No idea about the colour yet, as this is a very long term project Bare ally for the body would save the cost of having it painted , so that's a possibility... If so, the wings, wheels and chassis would probobly be red, in homage to the 1920s Riley 'Redwinger' sports model (bare ally body with red wings)

That's a cool project I'd have a hard time sticking with period mods though if it was me ;D I always wanted to build something pre-war but using later running gear. Like a bike engined Austin 7 ruby or an old Hillman with tubular double A arm suspension all round and inboard coilovers. There used to be an old Hillman that went to RTTS many years ago that looked like a mini ant hill mob car...think it had a Toyota engine or something in it.

Yeah, I remember that car..some lovely fabrication work and details in that. I must say I prefer the solid disc wheels to wires ..they look so right on that car.

That's a cool project I'd have a hard time sticking with period mods though if it was me ;D Thanks! There is still a huge amount of modifying that can be done, and of course, if the engine is rebuilt to modern tolerances (definately a new crank!!), it's not entirely period mods, but still in keeping with the regs. A bit like the smaller wheels (about 16" - would have originally been 18" or 19") and wider tyres on the red TT Sprite in a post above. There is also loads of info on tuning-up Rileys (IIRC, a popular mod used to be replacing the inlet cam with another exhaust cam!!) However, the really fun bit will be fully mastering the crash gearbox ;D I saw it a few years ago - it's very very nice! Incredibly well made, and also so restrained as well. As the wheels, brakes, rear axle, engine and 'box etc were all from an RM (IIRC, chosen partly because he liked the looks of the engine!!), it's a pity that it wasn't badged as a Riley, (either way, still a wonderful car ) especially as Riley themselves had used a not too dissimilar style of grille for their Sprite sportscar:

The Riley rod's great isn't it. I prefer the solid disc wheels on some vintage cars too, I saw a pair of vintage MGTCs around Aviemore a while back, both British Racing green (what are the chances of that, eh? Although they were together) and one had black wires on it, the other silver steels with little hubcaps, and I have to say the one with steelies looked better than the other

that is sweet for some reason always loved them motors, Is that a MG Midget wing i see on the top there lol Thanks! It should be a fun project, when we get the chance to do anything. The pics show it where it is in storage at the moment (in exchange for the storage, tomorrow I've got to remove the rest of the paint off the Reliant Scimitar coupe that's next to it... ). Do you mean the blue wing? That's not off a Midget - it's for my Amazon (as is the chrome bumper visible in the other pic)!! All the rest of the pile is Riley ;D
