Following on from this thread a while back, I have now sourced a set of alloy wheels for the Amazon. All will be revealed shortly (those who already know, shh!!!) since they need cleaning up, and a gentle refurb / repaint first. However googling for info on diy refurbing of alloys doesn't turn up anything especially useful, as it all seems to be for modern wheels that are painted & lacquered, rather than the polished and detail paint finish that these wheels need. Is it ok to use nitromors / paint stripper to remove the old paint, or will this cause any issues with the alloy? I don't want to resort to getting them blasted (or whatever is appropriate for alloys, as I don't have time to take them away for that). I want to avoid just painting over the top though, as the old paint surface isn't good, this will also make for a neater edge with the areas that will be polished.

Are you on the VOC forum, Paul? I seem to remember that there's a good guide in the 240 section done by someone refurbing his Virgos. Edit: here it is

Cheers Ben - unfortunately that's the same sort of info that I've already found which doesn't cover what I'm intending to do. I'll only be painting some areas on mine, and the rest will be polished bare alloy. Currently the whole wheel is badly painted, so I need to get pretty much all the old paint off first, as the surface is poor, and the design of the wheels is such that I don't fancy trying to sand it all off.

You should be fine using Nitromors or any paint stripper. As long as the alloy is 'sound' in itself with no cracks or major corrosion. Just remeber not to let it dry on the paint. I always need a few goes with the stripper to get all the paint off but I have heard of some people covering the wheels in clingfilm after the the 'stripper goes on and leaving them for 24hrs.
Personnally I'd go for polishing then painting. That way you can make sure you get a nice clean edge. I also find that good quality Duck (duct) tape works far better than masking tape as it greatly reduces the bleed through. I also use a scalpel after painting to go along the edge to make sure the joint is a crisp as possible.
Hope that helps a bit.

a decent polishing guide would be good as I always think I must be doing something wrong as it take far longer to get far worse results than I'd hoped for LOL

I en up doing most of my polishing with a dremal. Does tend to take a while to do a set of wheels!! ;D I recently bought an old bench grinder and some mops but I can't seem to get the finish I'm after plus I tend to burn me fingers a bit too I've tried Ratta's method for wheels too and it works pretty well and is reasonably quick: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=94097&page=1I'm in Crawley at the end of the week. Give us a yell if you want a hand Have fun!

borednow - fantastic link, thanks! Don't know how I missed the 'how-to' part of that thread before, but it is also inspiring me to refurb / polish my wheels to a much better finish than originally intended!!
