Driving back from looking at a car* earlier this eve, and there's a strong smell of petrol. Turns out that the aft float chamber is curse word fuel out of the overflow. Not dripping or weeping but curse word. The fuel guage was visibly moving too....... Airfilters & floatchamber lid off - blew out the jet & it's still pumping juice everywhere Tried several times but couldn't fix it so gave in & called the RAC - only the 2nd time in 4 years though but strangely enough for the same reason!!!! I can't praise the patrolman enough - great guy, & knew exactly what he was doing. Turned out he also used to do classic rallying with Malcolm McKay (an old dept ed of Classic Cars mag) ;D And the cause? A 7mm by 1mm piece of crud in the float chamber jet Time for a fuel filter I think, & he even advised as to the best place for it as well *that free Moggy 1000 in the for sale section - pics to follow

Poo. Nothing disaterous though. Still makes you feel about |<->| that big when the RAC man diagnoses it in 2 seconds. Touch wood <knocks head> I've only used a breakdown service 3 times in 10 years + of motoring. And all of those times were in 'fleet' vehicles under 1 year old.

Hehe, I've used the AA 5 times this past year! Mainly in my "other" clunkers. The Benz has only ever broken down on me twice, and had to call the yellow van out just once. It's them other cars that cause all the trouble for me! Much like "other women" I suppose....

Touch wood all is now ok! However, I can tell you that petrol makes a lovely hissing noise when it hits a hot exhaust It's now running much more smoothly at idle too. I guess that there was a slight weep before, so I'm now hoping to get more sensible mpg again (mid to high 20s & 30 on the motorway) rather than the high teens I've been getting recently........ Lunchtime will involve a visit to Halfords to get a fuel filter & fuel hose, incase the inside of the old pipe is breaking up & caused the blockage.

good plan, nice to hear the old girl is going again! just out of curiosity, where did he say the best place for the filter was? (I'm thinking just after fuel pump before carb? but I'm probarbly wrong....)

He reckoned the filter should go between the pump & the carbs, but that's because there's nowhere to put it between the main metal pipe & the pump (mechanical, on the block) as the connecting hose there is very short. The filter will end up positioned above the inlet manifold right next to the rocker cover, so it will be very visible

Still makes you feel about |<->| that big when the RAC man diagnoses it in 2 seconds. i had to get the aa man out to my granada limo when it wouldnt start at a theme park. after half an our of twiddling on with everything i gave up , pinched tcc,s carlton to take the kids home(he stayed with the granada).. aa man comes along tightens the battery cable up and dave is away. i was sooooo embaresd (sp).

A very wise idea for everyone here (assuming you don't have one already).

I fitted the fuel filter & new fuel hoses (technically fuel injection hoses) the day before yesterday, and all was fine . All parts were bought from my local Halfords, whom I find very helpful, & for some reason the guy at the parts desk remembered my car However when parking the car this morning, I noticed a gentle piddle of fuel (from the aft float chamber overflow) when idling very slowly (clears when given some revs) so it looks like there's some crud in the float chamber jet again.....
