I don't care about getting my name in a book with some bloke who scoffed a thousand baked beans. The guy who prompted me to think about this is an ex-school teacher who now restores vintage MGs for a living, he speaks with a quiet, forced voice because he put a steering column through his chest ten years ago crashing the car pictured. My father raced and built cars with him and I haven't seen him in five years. He arrived at Classic Le Mans towing the MG behind his knackered 405 turbo diesel estate, having competed at a hillclimb in Italy the previous weekend. He'll often sleep under the trailer whilst rubbing metal with the double decker luxury motor homes around him in the same pit. It's this spirit I want to catch, I want to stand at a finish line after 24hrs and realise a British Land Speed Record, dirty and drained, wired and tired. Maybe three or four other people will be there. We will be jubilant and nobody else will know what we've done, just simple shaking of hands and knowing nodding of heads will suffice.
It's like coming second in the Hong Kong marathon, or being the first under 21 to climb Everest. It's just the fact you've done it should be enough.

dammit i was just in it for the baked beans... if you need a brew maker you know where to look young bryn I know what you mean about doing it because you want the challenge,it's the perfect anti-chequebook racing mentality. I wholeheartedly support you. I'll let you know if I find out more on the bike side if its relevant.

When I was younger I saved for something and that meant eating baked beans and rice for longer than I care to remember... They've got there place. As does a good old fashioned cup of char. If you find out anything you think is relevant, let us know... ;D

I'm not quite sure what relevance a spandex wearing, afghan haired 80s rock god has got to do with British Land Speed Records. But hey it works for me!

Small engines, average speeds, flying miles etc. The only real locations in the UK to do this would be Millbrook or Mira, I'm talking under 1ltr/750cc, 24hrs etc Did you know that the Type 2 van has the same Cd factor as an E Type? It's the same as a Countach I still say that a seriously chopped and sectioned Charade GTTi, destroked as fit would be the way to go... *n Cd figures are a bit more complicated than that. The normal figures quoted are comparing the drag of the car in question to a flat fronted block of the same frontal area, so although a VW bus may have the same figure as an E Type, the E type actually has less drag due to its smaller frontal area. Incidentally, the E Type coupe has some really nasty vortecies running off the tail - I don't envy the road tester who did 150mph in one! BTW, I don't suppose that there's anything that an industrial designer can do to help is there?

This is a cool thread Looking at the FIA class records pdf files, it would seem that James would want to go for Group 1 Catagory 5 class, which would put him in the supercharged upto 1000cc class. Cat 6 is for upto 1150cc if you went the 1120cc or 1149cc imp engine route. As for records, the flying start (or flying mile) record for 1000cc class seems to be 240mph which would be out of reach, I guess. Then I thought about the other 1000cc records which are listed as standing starts as follows : 1/4 mile 70mph 1/2 Km 84mph 1 Km 102mph These were all set by a car called "StripDuster" built in 1965 by Harold Bull in Ascot. Here's the spec of it : Engine Morris Minor 1000, 995cc, BMC 731 Camshaft, 9.3:1 Hepolite Pistons running on methanol & occasionally nitro-methane. Cylinder Heads Austin A30, widened ports. Gas flowed. Cooper S & Sprite valve springs. Autolite AG 701 spark plugs. 8.5:1 compression ratio. Triple 1.1/4" bore stub exhausts, 6.1/2" long. Carburettors/ injectors 2" S.U. carb or twin 1.1/4" Wal Phillips injectors. Later Harold built his own injector. Blower Ian Godfrey (Rootes type) ex-Air Ministry cabin blower, overdriven by 1:1.1/2 Fuel Pump 100 p.s.i. rotary pump designed and built by Harold Bull, run from front of blower with a gear reduction to turn it at crankshaft speed. Fuel Tank Longitudinally mounted, cylindrical lawn mower petrol tank. Transmission Three speed Morris 8 (circa 1936) with first and reverse removed. Clutch 7" Borg & Beck with uprated springs and competition linings. Rear Axle Solid mounted Morris Minor 1000 4.55:1 ratio. Narrowed to give 30" track. Front Axle Dropped tube type, chromed and mounted on leading links from a Morris Minor torsion bar. 41" track. Austin Seven stub axles Chassis Made from 1" dia. 16 s.w.g. mild steel tube, designed & constructed by Harold Bull. 104" Wheelbase. Brakes Morris Minor 1000 Front Wheels/tyres 12" R.S.W. cycle rims, spoked to hubs made by Harold Bull. 2" section white rubber tyres painted black! Rear Wheels/tyres Reversed Ford 105E 13" steel wheels with 5.20" treaded tyres. Body Aluminuim with spats each side of the engine and upswept tail to house parachute Paint Deep blue Metalflake with orange lettering. So, it would be the Imp engine vs BMC A series engine battle ;D I thought the above records might be able to be broken, but then I saw this clip of StripDuster www.jspoard.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/MOV00782.MPGFast off the line, isn't it !! Can you get an Imp to do 9 sec 1/4 miles ? Here's a nice pic www.ukdrn.co.uk/60/6030.htmI think we need to find out more through the MSA approved route. If done through the FIA, you best attend a 'speed record' event, making sure you paid FIA, for driver entry, record attempt entry, your international FIA 'speed record' licence etc etc etc. If you don't go to a organized speed record 'event', then it seems you have to find a track/road. Hire it for the day. Hire all the marshalls, the time keepers, a FIA representative and find a organizer (or do it yourself) etc etc. Loads of money either way !

My supercharged imp engine in that chassis would weigh in at around 250kG! If i get my 200bhp i want, then thats 800bhp per ton, and 8.6 sec quarters!
