How about hauling the motor out and replacing it with a nice modern turbo diesel out of a van or something? Just an idea i looked into that mate, its a bit too much trouble at the mo with my limited skillset! but it is on the cards! coming up, pics of interior carnage!

Not yet - I'm waiting for the Sat eve bbq at next years CARS BTW, given her high opinion of old cars (esp mine ;D), what does your missus think of the Commer? I hope she likes it as it's going to be very cool when it's finished unforch is was a choice between the van or her, the van won!

Russell,
I've just sent a message via Ebay to the guy who bought the gearbox I had back in January. He was a bit of a horder of Rootes bits and he was only round in West London. I'm hoping he'll be able to help out. Might be able to bring you a prezzie at the next pub meet ;D

That gearbox looks to more like an early Humber/hillman box, something like a superminx or humber 80. If you want strong, look for a humber hawk or supersnipe box .They're physically bigger but will bolt in .I have seen therm ( back in the day...) bolted up behind Zehryr sixes,Ford Y block V8's and chevies....Why? because when I lived in New Zealand,we couldn't afford Muncies etc as Kids and there were piles of english cars with 4 speed trannys laying about. That drive shaft damage looks like a "fork lift signature" .

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

The bit that worries me is the metal removed looks fairly good!!!!
Most people just cut the rotten stuff out till the get to good metal again!!! ;D

It's not neccessarily that it's rotten, but it's a fugga to get straight again..... I've seen the offending item first hand this eve and Chris Meercat is on the case making up some new sections already. Better to have it all fresh and square than nosh about trying to true up bent bits. The lad's doing a damn good job anyhows.

Broken gearbox tailshaft, eh? Is it a cast aluminium one with a 5 bolt fixing? Is the number on the casing 1981061? Got one sat outside the back door (it's not always there - Seth asked!) - yours if you want it (there's a few bits chipped off at the seal end, but it's perfectly serviceable) - no output shaft though.
