That one has a bit of what I call the "unhappy look". Check out a Roller very carefully as some parts are notoriously expensive if they fail.
I've been looking again as I just need to scratch that Rolls Royce itch (although I'd prefer a Bentley T1) and there are some very promising looking vehicles under £4K.

"needs a service" is eBay code for "engine has some weird faults which won't be fixed by servicing it"

Hell, it's close to the Gathering so we could all be in with a shot I've been sniffing around one for a grand for the last year or so, but it's very hard to pin the owner down. It's a powerful itch eh Akku?

It's a good job I'm miles away and don't have 2K spare.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I must also confess to a strange hankering for a Silver Shadow.
But sadly not that one. She looks to have been sat for a little while... and there's probably a very expensive reason why.

I too have a huge urge to own one of those. The silly low prices just make them very appealing. One day...

Without being too doom and gloom, a cheap Roller is going to be like anyone other "cheap" highend production car, "cheap........ until something breaks or the MOT is due" very cool though would love to rock one around while pumping out some thrash metal just to appear like a total idiot ;D "needs a service" is eBay code for "engine has some weird faults which won't be fixed by servicing it" One of the funnest things I've read in a long time

They have a funny PCD as I recall. Is it same as early Land Rover?

Good old roller wedding trash will be rotten, engine on it's last legs and a money pit! Basically only good for parts and to fix even these rollers in expensive!

I had thought of a big block Chevy in one. Rolls use the TH400 box so no messing about there, just use the Chevy engine and TH400 box connected to Rolls shifter and prop. I don't think its so much the engines failing or anything is the issue but suspension, air con, brakes, all that stuff which is £££££ Although a mate had a Silver Shadow and many of the parts he needed he discovered could be found on other UK cars and Land Rovers of the period, saving a fortune on bits. Some parts will be unique and will require either deep pockets or fabrication etc. to deal with.

They have a funny PCD as I recall. Is it same as early Land Rover? i seem to remember them being 5x6" or something around that. unique i think too, so adapters time. i agree that id expect it to need work for that money, but if you buy one that cheap youd fully expect it to be sh1t, rather than spending twice as much on one that could be just as bad. ive heavily and seriously researched buying one of these to do custom out of. tbh, that one falls into the 'best' production years to buy one, as although its still tax exempt, its post '70 so it has a GM th400 gearbox, so if the engine is borked any sbc/bbc/diesel v8 ( ) chevy lump will drop in, plus it wont have the citroen based load levelling sus on the front, only on the rear, so there less to go wrong. the only other seriously scary/expensive bit mechanically would then be the 4-caliper front brakes- but these days it would be easy to attain that kind of braking effort from some big (relatavely) cheap 4 or 6 pots off something like a x5 or a cayenne, so youre only taking a set of caliper adapters and maybe some disc machining, which has gotta cost less than the 600 per caliper the RR ones are. in the grand scheme of things, bodywork can be fixed relatively easily and cheaply, as none of the shapes on these are massively complicated. even repair panels arent massively expensive and pretty much everything is available off the shelf. sills are about £150 each, a rear wheel arch panel about the same. as with most classics, its the interiors and trim that cost. the interior looks above average condition and is a reasonable colour too, plus the chromework looks ok, so if its even half made of metal and not pudding, it don't look too bad a buy tbh at that price. its definatley an itch i need to scratch at some point too, and tbh if i didnt have cars coming out my eyeballs at the mo, id be off for a look at it!

Engines are tough - 6.75litre, but only about 210bhp (R-R never quoted figures) but with about 150bhp on tap at 1500rpm so very unstressed. I know of one that when rebuilt at 100k (due to oil leaks from aged seals), needed just gaskets and piston rings. Bores, pistons, crank, all bearings etc were spot on. The guy rebuilding it is a perfectionist & there is no way he would have cut any corners. Also he later dynoed it in his test cell, hence figures above, which were measured at the flywheel & with ancillaries.
I was around when he sorted the rest of the car - I remember shocks were £250 +VAT a corner from Rolls dealer (ten years ago, so unlikely to be cheaper) but the lady at the parts desk recommended getting a Harvey Bailey handling kit instead. However he ended up rebuilding the shocks himself and using thicker oil to uprate them. Rear brake callipers are unique to R-R (4 pot with handbrake) so I think he had to get the OEM rebuild kits, but front runs a pair of two pot per side & the piston & seal kits are the same as a Ford, as he matched them up at a local motorfactors. Loads of high pressure hydraulics though, for self levelling & instead of a servo.
If you can get one, the pukka R-R workshop manuals (several binders for the whole car) are very comprehensive.
