Right, I need some help. I need to get something economical unfortunately. So that means looking at diesels. I need suggestions of some cool diesel cars that I can get for under £1500 and that I can easily make look pimp/ dubbing/ vip you know Cars I've thought of already are VW Passat, MK4 Golf, Audi A4 but just wondered if someone has any ideas a bit further outside the box. Ideally want it to still have a bit of power and tuning potential (like the VAG PD engine etc). Cheers guys Jamie

My Audi 80 TDI Avant is returning about 55mpg on a run, 45 around town - is that quite economical for a fair sized estate car?

Peugeot 405, good looking car, french handling, diesel lumps can be cheaply modified for extra power. Touring car look FTW.........

306 D Turbo - Could get 3 good ones for your budget, good looking, great handling, simple, tough and easy to tune. Simple pump mods, a bigger cooler and fuelling/boost adjustment should give 140 bhp easily. I've had 4, great cars

Passat wagon TDi. Your budget will get a good 115bhp B5 model (97-2000). Tuneable PD motor. 5x112.5 pcd, so loads of wheels choice. Coilovers for €200. Genuine 65mpg on a run, high 40s in town. And a huge boot for stufffff. Suffin' like this: Just avoid auto and triptronic 'boxes!

passat or 405. I would go for the 405 because my mate had 3 of them all had at least 180k on the clock and still going strong, returning 50mpg all day long.
Passat we had a 1995 one which did an easy 50mpg but the electrics were a PITA!

They also run on veg oilw hich helps. Elfin: From experience I wouldn't have another Passat. Had a B5 which was hopelessly unreliable and poorly made, in actual fact it was quite possibly the worse car I've ever owned and that really is saying something. *Edit: you'd get a really, really nice BX TD for that sort of money and have change. Look cool, suspension is both trick and ace, great on fuel and a good one is fantastic to drive.

I would go for the slightly earlier passat in the shape of the B4. Mine has the 90bhp IZ in it and I'm currently getting 58.5 MPG av over the last 3k. And it will run on veg if you wanted. Plus it is easy to get some extra poke just using parts from the later VAG TDi's Plus they drive nice handle well for a big old car. Other options I'd look at would be a BMW 2.5TDi (either e36 or equiv 5 series) or an Omega 2.5tdi (same engine ) as they can be chipped up to some good power

Another Passat vote since you clearly have a VAG leaning anyway. We have an AAZ engined B4 estate on cheapy coilovers. You'd get a nice tidy one for that money.. 4x100 pcd, veg friendly, 50+ mpg, and being AAZ, no ECU or electronic stuff to worry about, just a wire to the stop solenoid

And the seats are really uncomfortable, although it is a base spec model. They are useful for load carrying tho'

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over roar of all the cool diesel mercs (and others) in finland at the moment. Someone I know had a Merc 190D whith over half a million miles on the clock - and was still going. Not strong though. But then it had never been strong from the begining ;D I've heared incredible MPG reports from Citroen AXs... Diesel = way cool. Everyone should know that by now ;D

Same tuning tricks as the Pug already mentioned? (basically just 'turn up the fuel' a bit isn't it??)
