Someone I know had a Merc 190D whith over half a million miles on the clock - and was still going. Not strong though. But then it had never been strong from the begining ;D I've heared incredible MPG reports from Citroen AXs... Diesel = way cool. Everyone should know that by now ;D I think finnish 123's and 124's were sold with half a million km's on the odometer straight from the factory ;D I've seen alot of superturbos with over 500 on the clock too. Obviously half a million miles is a bit more, although a guy i know has a 123 with a million km's. A friend who visited some arab-land told me about a taxi 123. The odomeater showed 400 thousand, so the guy told the driver it's unusual to see 123's with so few miles, to which the driver replied "yes, it's only rolled over once!" ;D Also - fallout 1 & 2 ftw. ;D

yayy I'm not the only fallout fan but I prefer fallout 3.
anyway enough off topic I thought of another possibility. It might not be as cool as a merc but the vauxhall cavalier. the 1.7diesels use isuzu engines, are pretty damn reliable and brilliant on fuel.

It's totally stock, but I love it for being so damn economical, reliable, practical and comfortable. Mine's only done a 'mere' 203,000 miles, but still runs really sweet. Especially on 100% veg (which I will be going back to if/when the prices go down again) The only thing I would change, but can't, would be to have an Estate. I think Vauxhall missed a trick there by not doing a load lugger for the Mk3 Cavalier It hasn't stopped me thinking of transplanting the engine into a Carlton estate or Mk2 Cavalier estate though....the Carlton would be a nice motorway barge with oodles of space, the Cavalier would be more retro, but probably not as nice a drive as the Carlton. In the meantime, I'll just keep clocking up the comfy miles in the Mk3.

After doing a bit of work on a 405 diesel estate yesterday i'd say get one of those. 82 year old owner had owned it from new. 530,000 miles on it and it with the original engine. Exterior was still very presentable, interior was OK, still drove perfectly.

After doing a bit of work on a 405 diesel estate yesterday i'd say get one of those. Funny you should mention that....I've been kinda thinking of one of these as a possible replacement for the Cavalier at some point. The guy that lives at the top of my lane had one a few years back which he'd owned from new. 500K+ miles on it, a bit rough around the edges, but still pretty solid (rough = car park dents and paint fade more than anything) He ran it on 100% veg for the last few years until he retired and bought a 55plate C-class diesel estate. He still raves on about the 405. It's a nice shape and capable of interstellar mileage. Comfy too. Getting harder to find good ones now, but I'm certainly keeping it at the top of my 'daily hack' radar. I like the Passat's but think I prefer the Peugeot as the outsider.

The old guy I was doing the work for said he was thinking of selling it last year, and the salesman at the Peugeot dealer who've done all the servicing convinced him not to spag £25k on a 407 Estate and keep the 405.

[quote author=scrapingscrap board=general thread=108995 My parents '97 B5 (90hp TDi) struggles to get above 45mpg on a run. Around 40MPG round town. It's been like that since they bought it 11 years ago. And the seats are really uncomfortable, although it is a base spec model. I find that odd, my 96 B4 has the 90BHP TDi lump in it and I'm currently averaging 58.5 MPG. Alot of that is A roads and M ways (at normal M way speeds ) but I do have to suffer 5 miles a day of Bristol rush hour And mine is a Cl (so 1 up from base) and the seats are V comfy

I remember when me and my mates all passed our tests that my mates dads company car was a 405 TD estate. My mate was covered to drive it as well, it went well (upsetting an XR3i at one point, which at 17 is a big deal ). I am liking the idea of a touring car style diesel at the mo, perhaps I should strip out the passat and get some tubing to build a climbing frame inside

*Edit: you'd get a really, really nice BX TD for that sort of money and have change. Look cool, suspension is both trick and ace, great on fuel and a good one is fantastic to drive. 1.9TD conversion? Same tuning tricks as the Pug already mentioned? (basically just 'turn up the fuel' a bit isn't it??) You wouldn't even need to swap the engine, the BX had a 1769cc version of the XUD engine, and it's just as tuneable

When I was younger I too thought diseasel was no fun However I have just recently turned to the dark side and can confirm it is not just fun, but filthy dirty fun. I don't expect anyone to understand this, but I bought a Fiat Multipla JTD (under your budget and 36k genuine miles) and recommend it highly, I've not driven my retro for about 3 weeks. edit: have a gratuitous pic of the Toad

^ I love that picture! I had a W plate Passat TDi PD 115 and I still think it was the best car I've ever owned, OK it wasn't the most exciting but it did everything well, well until it got rear ended last year in a pile up. :-(.
I've got a 2005 Mondeo ST TDCI now and I still much more preferred my Passat to it, So much so that I'm thinking about selling it to buy another cheap diesel again.
Don't dismiss the Peugeot diesel's either, They are very quick and economical and those Phase 2 306's are a good looking car IMHO.

Rover 600 Diesel I think they only came with the VP44 electronic bosch pump (so a laptop's needed forany fuelling twiddles) BUT, the pre 96 Rover 220s,like my old one, came with the mech bosch VE pump I upped the max fuel screw, removed the torque limiter spring entirely (the spring that holds the limiter pin up, and gives boost-referenced fuel limiting) Upped the boost a smidge, deleted the EGR valve, and fitted my own side-exit exhaust - 50cm of 2 "3/4 perforated pipe, in a 3"1/4 tube. Zero restriction Even after fitting a roof-rack, with ammo crate, spotlamps, mutilated dolls head, etc , a set of bullbars on the back, and lots of other heavy curse word..... it STILL easily returned 55mpg. Whilst moving like poop off a shovel! Want to get myself anotherRover 220 next easter. Will be interesting to see what kinda mpg I can get without the curse word bolted/welded to it

We used to have one at work and I drove it quite a lot. 5 up to Le Mans one year, plenty of room with the picnic box in the middle up front, neither me nor the boss hanging about when we were driving and it returned an average of 45mpg including several laps of the old Rouen circuit on the way back. Comfortable, practical, economical and remarkably chuckable for a van.

+3 on the fact they should have made a Cavalier Mk3 estate. They did make a (2.3) diesel Carlton but as much as I love Vauxhalls even I couldn't recommend one of those. To say they are slow and agriculutural is somewhat of an understatement! If size isn't a problem I'd imagine shoehorning the 1.7D Isuzu into a Nova or Corsa would be a right old laugh, especially with the boost tweaked up a bit!

Of course we're saying about the cavalier not having an estate but there is a possible compromise. mk3 astra estate can get them so bloody cheap now and same engine I think as the cav. OK so not as good as the cav but definitely worth thinking about. just a couple to show what they can look like
