My betting would be on something like a 6 month ban and a fine but that is just a guess. Wasn't expecting that weight of book! Well each tyre is 3 points on there own, I'm not sure what non working lights and dangerous body work bring with them but it's got to be on its way to 12 points?

It's a shame, I doubt whether he maliciously set out to break the law. It's just he did and now has to pay the consequeneces, which I suspect will be severe. Five years ago I too was 'felt' for an unroadworthy vehicle in my buggy, but all I had to do was re-MOT it. I was given a 'rectification' notice, highlighting the suspension, bodywork and brakes as being of a sub standard level. Without getting boring the policeman had no idea what he was looking at, so I'm a little reticent to jump on the lad for negligence just yet... Especially when he was responsible for this BMW, which has had a load of work done to it, proving a certain level of mechanical knowledge.

That BMW looks very cool indeed.
Realistically, if your going to drive a rat-looker then make sure it's legal...because the police are going to check it...it's their job.
Those faults don't actually sound that bad...I'd say I drove similar cars at that age too. Bald tyres are obviously a bad thing, but I can remember running on tyres with the inside edges worn out while I was getting the money together for a new set.
Hopefully the lad isn't making excuses, he'll get it fixed and not make the same mistakes again.

When I worked as a Scaffolder,we had a tosser who will remain nameless as a driver. It was his job to check the lorry daily (12 ton Merc) then fill out a log with any defects. We got a phone call one day saying that he had a blowout,so my boss sent out the local tyre company we used to change the tyre.He got a phone call about forty five minutes later from the fitter saying he couldn't do anything as three of the tyres were down to the canvas and the spare was illegal. In the mean time Plod had rolled up as it was blocking a busy high street. The dick was arrested on the spot, and to make matters worse,he took the log book to court with him.He had put a line through the tick on the box that said the tyres were fine. Good thinking but the tick was in blue Biro and the line he put through it to turn it into a cross was in RED! The bloke got six months bird, which considering the carnage he could have caused with a fully laden 12 ton lorry was a bit light.

yeh that bmw is his baby, he's worked real hard for it, unfortunately not long after completion the engine span its bearings..the pickup was just to tide him over until the bmw was fixed,
its a shame if he gets a ban but worse things in life will happen, I'm sure he will learn his lesson from this.
cheers for the headsup on what he could be facing guys.

Not 100% certain, but based on both my brother's experiences, and what I've heard elsewhere (admittedly relating just to speeding, but in bro's case, this was 72 in a 40 ), his best policy would probably be to turn up smart but not too smart (ie collered shirt, but not a suit), be apologetic, learned his lesson etc. The guy who was in court before my bro had the book thrown at him by the magistrates because he tried to be a smart rse , but my bro was apologetic etc, and just got 6 point and a reasonable fine - pretty good given that he was expecting a ban!!!

thats some good advice paul. when i was a young daft whipper snapper (in 1991) i got done for wreckless driving. turned up at court with my dad, i was dressed quite smart, trousers, shirt and shoes, very apologetic. i got 6 points and a fine. the solicitor expected the book being thrown because it was at the height of the joy riding phenomenon in the north east. i counted myself as lucky and have tried to be careful ever since.

tbh, the guy's a bit of a wand for driving something like that.... The dings and stuff, whatever, I drive a "true" rat (i.e. it might look , but its safe!!!), but bald rubber?, that's pretty dumb. Still, doubt he's gonna do it again, just hope the punishment reflects that.

As well as 3 points per tyre, he can be fined up to £1000 for each one as well, and that's without the other offences.

doubt they would do much about the non working lights as you can't predict a bulb going thats just a telling off for not checking them everything else is on his own head as far as the law is concerned he should have checked it all before taking the vehicle out bald tyres body work ect no excuse and in breach of the vehicles insurance so if they want to get funny they can throw an invalid insurance offence at him as well not good at 19 yrs old as it more than likley double any future insurance quote
