My mate got pulled over last night, and the powers that be decided his vehicle (p100 pickup) was in not a roadworthy condition, has anyone here ever got collered for this sort of offence? they told him he will have a court date and should expect points and a fine. the things they listed on the form were 3bulbs not working Bodywork in dangerous condition (left rear of bed flapping about, and massive crash ident behind drivers door) 2tyres illegal. he has had to spend the nigth in tesco's car park about 40miles from home and cant move the car now. i personally wouldnt have driven that thing about as it would attract so much attention, rattle can black p100 in a crappy state with "trampdrift" written on the side, draws too much attention. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&item=280004432318&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1that was the old girl before he painted it. so yeh any experience on the subject would be appreciated.

It's not about 'getting collared' or trying to weasel out of it.
Rules are rules - if you are driving around on bald tyres and with bits of the bodywork actually hanging off you deserve to have the book thrown at you.
How hard is it to patch up the body to an acceptable level with a blot of welding and some filler? Not very - it don't have to be pretty.
How hard is it to carry some spare bulbs?
How hard is it to check your tyres (and if going drifting in a pick-up, carry a spare set)??
If I were you, I'd get some new mates. All yours sound like w*nkers.

Jeez, i know that guy off FSOC! Cant help thinking stuff like that attracts attention. I let a lad in a lexarse-new rangerover LED lighted, big rimmed Golf get past me last night, doing over 40 in a 30, shortly after dodging some group of cameras he went past one of those '30 slow down' signs and the cops chased him! lucky for me, although i wasnt going mad but i was in a newly MOT's still a bit shonly looking sports car! I got ignored in an invisible standard silver saloon car, and got used to it, better be careful even if mine is 99% safe I have had some sheds looked over, my crashed xr2 nearly got the book thrown at us!

Licence holiday in swansea - care of the magistrates and fully deserved - no excuse for driving around in something that could cause an accident.......... Bald tyres are dangerous!

Is it un-called-for?
Recently the lad has regaled us with tales of his 'mate' who got collared sans tax / mot / insurance and in a car still registered to rearwheelnick,
Now you get this tale of someone either too lazy or too cheap to make sure their car is fit to be driven on the highway. It's basic common sense.
I think this 'drifting-in-a-complete-sh1t-heap' thing is class, but if it's that dodgy, why not trailer it to the event, or put some effort in. It's one thing putting your own knackers on the block when drifting a heap, it's quite another to be driving something so shonky in the public domain.
I'm sure you'd think they were a to$$er too if their bald tyres caused them to run down a load of schoolkids etc.

He's f****d.... How badly will depend on his age and previous record.
For a start, having bald tyres is an offence of absolute liability, ie the law says there is absolutely no excuse possible which will get you off the hook.
And don't forget, he was automatically un-insured too....

OK, I shall retract my sweeping generalisation.
I will however declare that at least TWO of his mates are willy-fiddlers.

So how much attention does a 'safe' and 'legal' rat looker get off the cops?
cos they could look at it and find new faults (or in US county sherif style bust up some bits!)
Cant really call mine 'rat' since i cleaned off the sludge!

Hmm, baldy tyres, non-functioning lights and flapping bodywork, that’s a pretty poor effort, not much to add really except I hope they throw the book at him! You can’t really flout the law to that extent and hope to get away with a clip round the ear.

I'm really sad to read this.
I like the attitude of the Tramp Drift "Buy it, Drift it, Break it, Scrap it" but this is taking things way too far.

hey I'm not asking for ways for him to get out of it, the guy is going to plead guilty to it, i just asked for what he is likely to expect fine wise and point wise, he's only 19. and heaven forbid anyone ever does anything stupid when you were young,
i was stupid and left a car registered to me, i certainly wont be doing it again, my mate now realised how daft it was to drive a car like that,
after i got pulled over the other week, i realised how close i came to getting more than a telling off for my rusty rear arches, and immediately reattached my rear arches.
and NickB you are entitled to your opinion and thats fair enough, but i swear i remeber you "regaling" us with tales of your first rwd exploits when you were young, i could say you were a w@nker for driving like that..
but yeh like i said, i didnt ask for ways for him to get off, i told him not to drive it like that, i wouldn't drive it like that..i just asked what he would be expecting fine and point wise.
but yeh whatever.

So how much attention does a 'safe' and 'legal' rat looker get off the cops? In my experience, a rough-looking car usually attracts little attention unless you've done something wrong or if you look like a stereotypical hooligan. I only ever get hassled if I've got a baseball cap on. Drove the crusty (but roadworthy!) Escort all weekend with no grief, and I attribute my Rozzers-free weekend to my trusty straw hat.

As I see Rat-look, it's all about making your car look slightly trashed, unloved, heck making it look unroadworthy. Dents are good, matt paint or unmatched panels, missing trim, different wheels yada yada. But it's a look, it's just meant to look like that hence the name. If I drove a rat-looker I'd expect to be pulled occasionally, hence I'd make sure it was roadworthy - I'd probably put more effort into keeping it legal than a daily boring eurobox.
Anyone who drives round with bald tyres is asking for trouble. To do it in the style of car that attracts attention is just plain daft. To have the name of a Drift club painted on the side is incredibly daft, the first thing the coppers will assume is that you've just been drifting (yes, they do read car mags, they do know what people do!) and check the tyres.
Sigh. It's a shame, as I've only just twigged what an excellent drift car a P100 makes!

My first car only ever attacted Plod once, for a non-working tail light (flicked it and it worked again ;D), and it made my Amazon look concours!!!

i just asked for what he is likely to expect fine wise and point wise, he's only 19. and heaven forbid anyone ever does anything stupid when you were young, As I understand it a police officer isn't able to hand out over a certain number of points in one sitting so in these circumstances it goes to court.. so that's why he's going there. Now what happens is pretty up in the air and will depend on how the judge percieves how wreckless he's been. There's a chance he gets a judge who's a keen follower of TrampDrift and drifts his own illegal pickup on the road but it's more likely he gets a judge who drives a Jag and detests young people arsing around in shonky old motors. My betting would be on something like a 6 month ban and a fine but that is just a guess.

Yeah a ratter would need to be maintained i think, easy to say at my age, but i was a teen not many moons ago at all and sadly the thinking process is different. most of us seem to do some daft stuff. Paul H i think an historic volvo with those stickers shouldnt upset too many officers! unless he caught you drifting of course. I was thinking too of modified but ratted ans one cops eye catcher.

how long has he been driving? i think I'm right in saying if it's <2 years (highly likely if he's 19) than you get banned after 6 points. In this case he may well be better off taking the ban, getting to know the bus timetable, and then getting a clean licence back in 6 months.
Otherwise, if they give him a load of points (they sometimes dole out one less than would get you banned, so five or 11), he's gonna find it impossible to get insured for the next five years until they come off.
It's definately three points per unroadworthy tyre so he's up to six already, probably a fine for the bulbs, not sure what the usual approach is to parts of your car hanging off. A court may well bundle it all together instead of totting it up.
