Made some good progress on the Austin 7 over the last few days. Clutch plate is re-lined, replacement clutch bearing, new clutch bearing release levers (the things that failed causing catastrophic DNS at last race), cleaned up and oiled replacement gearbox, bought a load of new UNC bolts so that it can be better assembled and easier worked on, instead of a bad combo of old, worn out UNC, UNF, WW and Metric nuts and bolts holding it together. Removed faulty speedo, re-aligned some wiring, started to make new headlight/wing mount, cleaned & degreased engine...
Also investigated some dodgy wiring and managed to get my '78 Mini working again, and drove it to work on Friday. Goes lovely, despite spending all winter in a field!

Today I have mostly been painting a Fiat Multipla with a roller. I spent all of yesterday stripping down and rebuilding a fiat multipla gearbox, just to replace the diff with one from a brava gearbox i picked up cheap cos planet gears shouldn't look like this. Took a lot longer than expected as i don't have a manual to guide me and lots of fiddly bits fell out the original box and i had to be more careful with second one to find out where they came from. On the upside it's all back in just need to fit the driveshaft and hub on passengers side, replace the pads, fill with gearbox oil and its good to go for MOT!

Well, i wanted to finish off stuff on the Supra yesterday, but, what with the crappy weather, two busted ankles and a bruised calf, i was stuck in front of the telly, with nothing but crisps and fizzy stuff to keep me amused

Not like what I was doing at all! Although it has taken me 4 days so far spaced over 2 weekends due to the fiddly bits in the doors, engine bay etc Anyway, well played, I bet that took some graft without a manual. Those gears were properly foooobarred, i hope it's not a common problem since i don't really fancy it myself!

Today was spent finishing off the gearbox refit, changed the pads on the front then spent rest of day trying to get the indicators to work!! Still not working properly. I spent all of yesterday stripping down and rebuilding a fiat multipla gearbox, just to replace the diff with one from a brava gearbox I picked up cheap cos planet gears shouldn't look like this. [pic] Took a lot longer than expected as I don't have a manual to guide me and lots of fiddly bits fell out the original box and I had to be more careful with second one to find out where they came from. Those gears were properly foooobarred, I hope it's not a common problem since I don't really fancy it myself! Its a common (but not scarily so) issue on 1.6 versions but i am not sure why as gearbox is shared with brava's and some alfas and they don't seem to have the same issues, although i have noticed that my front tyres are quite different in tread depth, ones nearly new and the other is close to limit, that probably helped wear it out, leading to its demise. On the upside it did get me 25 miles in that condition, albeit with a couple of brown pants locked diff round corner moments!!

Back to the Future was on. I call that a productive day I had a busy Friday and Saturday, so today was my day off. Tomorrow is going to be a fun day, got to move all the cars round in my garden. Sounds easy, but all of the cars have to come out of the garden, down my driveway between the houses, onto a busy A road and back again. Typically, the car I need at the front is the one at the back.

Yup, Public vote of thanks to Jon for the welding, I'd be lost without mates. Did you here the clown sounding his horn as I pulled out of your place on Saturday? Came screaming up the road behind the Midget, which wasn't accelerating quite as fast as he assumed it should have done. And then sat on my bumper all the way up to the lights before diving rond me into a gap. Why is it that drivers of modern Audii's donn't seem to realise a 1500cc 30 year old car doesn't get out of the way with the same speed as their plastic thing does??? And by way of a picture, this is Suzy the three pound Midget... Soon to be back on the road for the first time since 1998

Because sadly far too many (but fortunately not the vast majority of) modern car drivers have a severe attitude problem about old(er) vehicles & they just can't bear to be behind one. I've been on the receiving end of some very dangerous overtaking manoeuvres (one time, nearly forced off the road by a private hire cab & on several other occasions on single carriageway fast A roads, the 'offender' has then immediately slowed down to significantly lower speed than that which I was driving at....) & it's happened far too many times to be a coincidence.... Back on topic ( ), over the weekend I had a clear out of car parts in the garden shed (now in my aunt's cellar for long term storage), and I collected some new (to me) tyres for the Amazon. Set of 5 (one unused, other four barely used - just enough to remove the moulding nibs) Vredrestein Snow+ in 165R15, which are not easy to get hold of, and for a significant saving over brand new. Roll on winter!!! ;D
