As previously said on this forum,.. any thing that comes out of the Fiat factory is retro the day it leaves So my mum's 2004 New Panda shopping trolley is retro? Actually, I can see your point. It's the base model, and apart from electric windows and City Mode steering, it's pretty much back-to-basics motoring! Hell, you don't even get a passenger side door lock, the locking can only be done from the drivers door!

A mate of mine has one. And a Delorean. Need I say more? He can't park them in fornt of his house, not just head turning it would make peoples heads SPIN. And the level of accidents would go through the roof!

i actually think the vel satis is pretty stunning to look at as well, top marks there..and look how the design has filtered its way down to the mainstream..

I like the Vel Satis. I've been in one and its a serious car. Tumbling resale on large Renaults means I'll probably be able to afford one in 18 months or so LOL although I'm holding out for a an MG ZT V8

driven an mg zt-t v8 and it was fricking stunning. traction control off,super launches... also has the benefit of looking pretty much like a stock zt-t from the outside,then whoomph you're gone...surprised all the saxo kiddies round our way when we had one for a weekend..he he...mwaahahahahha Tried to persuade my stepdad to buy one as a sensible replacement for his 3.0 v6 406,told him to LPG it and all would be right with the world. Much more soul than my lexus v8,though 20 times the cost at the mo!

For that matter, look at all those van-based MPVs like the Berlingo and Kangoo. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, basic but sturdy inside, and practical for ferrying kids/tat about. Retro values don't have anything to do with retro looks IMO. All the retro-looking cars you can get these days are actually just fashionable.

Like the A2, cheapish to buy (2nd hand) fits 4 6' adults, plenty of luggage, solid quality interior and does over 60mpg on average! Even got 64mpg on a tank one week! Miracle car.

People don't like the new Mini because it's popular. If it had been a flop and not a cool car to drive a lot of people who 'hate' them would love them.
I can understand people not wanting to join the crowd and hanker after something fashionable but it gets mixed up with the cars true merits and that's not totally fair.

Feel free! BMW own the Triumph brand (only thing they kept when they flogged off Rover, as Triumph were their only ever real competitor from a UK franchise, Not true old boy . They kept Rover*, and Riley. Possibly also a few others (Wolseley??), but I can't be arsed to check on the patent / trademark office website. *IIRC, this was licensed to MGR, to stop them building a 4x4, as part of the deal when Ford bought L-R. The reason for keeping Riley was that it was the brand that could most easily rival BMW. as for the Z4, the roadster is uncannily like a Healey . Bear in mind also that there were Riley & Healey concepts built by BMW (although the Riley was never shown publicly, and BMW had no rights to the Healey name) but AFAIK, no Triumphs....

Any new Bristol and (ahem) the current XJ6/XJ8. Every time one overtakes I have to look at it - it still stirs me as almost as much as the Hirohata Mercury.

People don't like the new Mini because it's popular. If it had been a flop and not a cool car to drive a lot of people who 'hate' them would love them. I'm only speaking from my point of view here, but I very much dislike the new beetle and the new mini. I think they are decent little cars. They look ok and they drive ok (from what I can tell having been a passenger in both). The reason I dislike them so much is because, from what I can see (and obviously I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong) but the ONLY reason they are called the new beetle and new mini respectively is a cynical marketing ploy by VW and BMW to cash in on the image and reputation of the original cars. The new beetle doesn't share any commonality with the old beetle other than a dash vase. There's no horizontally opposed, 4 pot, rear mounted, air cooled engine in the new beetle is there? The old beetle was about value for money. It was a cheap(ish) car that was built with huge efficiency of detail. The new beetle on the other hand is a Golf in sheeps clothing, with all the associated whistles and bells and a far greater degree of luxury than the original would ever have afforded. I find it a shame that VW and BMW didn't have the guts to innovate with these cars. They had the opportunity to create something new rather than trying to corner the DINK market with "funky" cars that pay nothing more than lipservice to the originals.

The BMW Mini was under development by MG-Rover for several years before BMW got involved. Some of the early pre-prototypes I saw were very wierd, ranging from something that looked like a Smart Car to something that looked like an Egg on wheels. Apparently (so a Mii buff recently told me) that the engine in the MINI is made by Chrysler and that deal was signed well before BMW got involved and it still annoys BMW execs a bit as Chrysler is the partner of their old rival Mercedes... The Mini at least got a handover from its predecessor.
You could argue the Mk3 Escort isn't really an Escort because it doesn't have RWD and nothing got carried over from the Mk2 Cortina to thr Mk3 Cortina. You could have called the Sierra the Cortina Mk6 as easily.
Its marketting driven. Some neame hang on for a long time on an evolving line of cars some pass away when the value is gone from the brand.

I always thought the 75/ZT was a fine looking car I jsut couldn't get over the FWD really. Last time I looked you could get a ZT260 (the V8) for £9K which was 6-9 months ago maybe. After the crash of MG-ROver you could get new unsod stock for £18K. The list price had been £30K plus, but the "real" price when MG-Rover was still in business was more like £28K. I don't know what the Nangking-MG-Rover group thing will do to prices but I'm looking for them being about £3K in another year or so and then I might just...

In that kind of Allegro square wheel, Citroen GS/BX super futureness, way. Crossed with mini, wheel at each corner thinking. I'm not a _huge_ fan of the 2 seater ones but they are instant classics... and I love my Mitsubishi Colt/Smart forFour Removable plastic panels ftw
