Took my manta to the car doctors this morning for a quick sill fix for its MOT. Alas one phone call from my friendly mechanic and my wek has been ruined. "Hi Russ, is there any metal on the left side of your car at all, all i keep finding is fibreglass!" Imagine my dismay, my beautiful manta with incurable inoperable terminal rust. (unless i wannaspend £2k) Where do i go from here? Do I just cut my losses and scrap the beast or punt it back on ebay?

Eeek. Now, here's what I reckon you should do: Take this as an omen that you ought to learn to MIG weld. Purchase MIG welder, have a play on some scrap bits of metal. Take a grinder and chop out all the wibblepoo from the Manta sills / floor. Buzz it up. May take a while to get the hang of it, but throwing a couple of hundred at a decent welder is far better than throwing £2k at a garage. The worst that'll happen is you'll have a Manta in bits and some welding skillz0rz. Best case scenario is you'll fix the Manta. And have welding skillz0rz. Win win sitch. IMHO.

That sucks. I know this doesn't really help at all, but you're not the only one. Do what BenzBoy suggests. It'll be well worth it!

The theory is spot on there BB. 2k on a garage is defo a No No though, unless you won 'playmonday'!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

everything which can be used to fit an XE in a RWD vauxhall, so gearbox, sump, prop, engine mounts.... dipstick? I think thats about it. If you clean that lot up and sell it as a 'package' on the bay you ought to get £300 easily I'd say.

If I can get some 'leave' over the weekend (or at least soon-ish) I'm appy to come over and hoik the valuable bits out with you. Also get the glass out, plus the interior too (as it's in good nick) and then get the rest weighed in. Sad it has to be this way, but it's better than blowing all your cash on a full resto. I'm sure we can find a suitable replacement, even if it's not-quite Manta shaped.
