Right, bear with me on this one.
I posted a couple of months back about wether I should go for my driving test now, or wait until I'm 21 (that'll be October). I've decided to wait and get something in the meantime to have a go at doing up to get me going as soon as I pass.
Anyway, I've spent the last month or so thinking about what to get, everything ranging from a Dolomite done up like a Sprint, a base model Chrysler Sunbeam done like a Lotus, or even a 4dr Escort Mk2. However, I've just been told by my parents that we still have our old Amazon in a lockup garage in town.
My Dad used it as a main car back when he used to race in Classic Saloons in 1989 (with another Amazon, funnily enough).
Its a G-reg B20 2dr, completely standard. We laid it up back when we were pretty poor and he couldn't afford to keep it running. He reckons it needs general tidying up, the sills replacing and possibly the wings too, but when we scrapped the old race Amazon a few years back, we stripped it of the useful bits (roll cage, front wings, glass, chrome etc).
Do you guys reckon its worth getting back on the road, or go for something like I mentioned above?
Feel free to post pics of modded 2dr's in here for some inspiration. ;D

If you need any other spares I have an Amazon Nut as a good friend local to me who has owned loads of them and still runs an estate version - he had a garage full of bits including panels!!!
Edited to add - PS I reckon go for it ;D

Do it, you will not regret having an Amazon as a first car I don't believe, loads of class and they look tops!

Definitely go for the Amazon. A nice lowering job on the original wheels (or widened originals!) will do the job nicely.
If you did decide on one of the others, what's with all the replica stuff? A Dolomite can look cool without being a Sprint copy and the same goes for the Sunbeam.

PaulH is your man for Amazon tips Reporting for duty! I posted a couple of months back about wether I should go for my driving test now, or wait until I'm 21 (that'll be October). I've decided to wait and get something in the meantime to have a go at doing up to get me going as soon as I pass. IMHO it's best to pass your test asap, especially since if you are a named driver (ie on a parent's car) iirc some insurers will now let you accumulate a no claims bonus in your own name. Also, an Amazon won't be cheap to insure for a young driver due to the engine size. Depends on the state of the body really, and are you doing it yourself or paying someone to do the work. If you are doing it yourself and have the facilities / ability, then go for it. As you already have a set of good front wings, that's a bonus as new ones are about £300 each! If the sills have gone, that will be the section behind the doors (2 door Amazons always seem to rot here). I'm sure a repair section is available, but the inner structure behind will almost certainly also need repair. As a G reg, it's probably dual circuit with different front calipers and master cylinder to earlier Amazons. Cheers for the comments guys. I think the wings we have a fibreglass ones, because the race car needed to be a little lighter. Luckily my Dad wrote down a load of info from the race car from when he used to display it at classic car shows - I've found his scrapbook that I'll attempt to scan over the next couple of days, include some nice pics of a wet Cadwell Park, circa 1987. I plan on doing the welding work myself, I need some practice on flat-ish panels as all I've done before is mountain bike tubing. If I can get down there this weekend, I'll have a look around it and try and get some pics.
