I have just completed a 10 mile (thats being generous) journey round town to my mates house and back. I can honestly say its was the most unpleasent time i've ever spent on the saddle. 1/ riding along this fairly main residential road, a silver Astra starts to pull out not expecting to find anything coming. See's me and has to stop. I admit i gave her the look coz she was about to pull out in the front on me. Also, i will admit to twice having made a similar mistake where by not expecting a car so not stopping properly; however, each time i've done it i've pulled on the anchors and stopped and i could understand the vehicle i was gonna pull out on getting angry at me. this one in the astra though, decided that i was at fault and so proceeded to ride on my tail. she followed me to the point where the road goes into a dual carriageway, i stayed in the outside lane at 30 (the speed limit) so she undertook me. unfortunately the bike didnt have enough power to keep up with her and prevent her from pulling back out... So i get to my mates house ( he lives in a modern housing estate) and i pick up the book i'd gone for and had just got back onto the main road out of the estate. 2/ there is a cyclist on the other side of the road and this passat doing about 40 decided he would over take the cyclist despite me coming towards him. 2 toots of the horn to that curse word! riding back home, a bit angry and come to a fish and chip shop. 3 / as i approached i saw two young men jump across the wall in front of the chippy and move towards the road so i had slowed down expecting them to run across in front of me. instead, they jump into the van...the driver however, doesnt look and then just opens his door without looking...so being rather annoyed (and thankful that i had slowed down) i revved the bike a bit and kept riding. next thing i know this transit is right on my ....'none of this n0b!' i thought. so slowed down to 25 and then back upto 30 but riding near the white lane so he couldnt pass me. he then got closer, and that really annoyed me so i dropped right down to 20, stayed there for 2 seconds and then went back upto 30. he came just as close so i did it again, and then started to over take me. a drop down into 3rd still didnt mean i couldnt keep up so he did get passed but hell, if there is one thing that annoys me, its drivers who think they can intimidate you because your own a bike; or think you don't need any road space, or think that even though you're going at the speed limit you're going too slow coz you've only got a 50... hmm...very angry...now calming down though...felt the need to rant! </rant> yes please I feel better now

unfortunately this sort of thing is what you will have to get used to. Little known fact , riding a motorbike makes you invisable. I know it goes both ways, there are some shockingly bad riders out there but it doesent excuse bad driving nearly causing an accident.

i always used to pull in and slow down to let drivers overtake if they were following to close, its the safest thing to do. "punishing" drivers by varying your speed and blocking so they cant overtake is a little foolish.

I no this is a bit different as I'm always driving with four wheels under me but depending on what I'm in, if I get some f***wit up my (usualy chavs) I tend to slam on the anchors whilst edging towards the centre of the road. Depending on what I am driving I will either then speed up again (cortina, escort) or just keep on the brakes and get ready for the sound of there front bumper and lamps shattering (Camper). I haven't got as far as the latter yet as the camper doesn't tend to stop as quick as modern cars (not even got a servo) but it doesn't half upset them. I know I'm probably going to get condemned for that aproach now but I don't care, if there's nothing else to get involved or coming the other way I'll do it every time as they wholly deserve it.

After some years on two wheels, I learned very quickly that it pays to move over and let those less educated road users go on their way. You tend to stay alive and unhurt longer. Please be careful!

Hmmm, playing "road warrior" on your bike against a builder's Tranny is a bit daft IMO. On the whole, sounds like a pretty normal day in the city, TBH!

i tend to set them up and put them into the central reservation or failing that make my car so wide they get wound up.
Different situation on a bike - been there done it wrote 3 bikes off. had the insurance company refusing to insure me anymore, and decided to get into a car and stay in one.

Please be careful! :)I agree totally. Life's too short as it is without being knocked off your bike and killed/hurt by some fool with no manners. Just let them go and be happy that you're a better person than they are. It's also worth remembering that there are a lot of violent headcases out there and your 50cc bike ain't gonna be fast enough to get away from one in a car that's got wound up with road rage.

Also, if someone is driving like a tw@t, it's much safer for them to be in front of you, where you can see them more easily.

If you are gonna ride a bike even a small one read roadcraft
If you are gonna ride a bike esp a small one - think Defensive not Offensive
Sorry and don't be offended but I'm gonna illustrate/comment on your examples
1/ riding along this fairly main residential road, a silver Astra starts to pull out not expecting to find anything coming. See's me and has to stop. I thanked her for recognising the vulnerability of a motorcylce and I'm pretty sure she's a lot more willing to be aware of motorcycles now
2/ there is a cyclist on the other side of the road and this passat doing about 40 decided he would over take the cyclist despite me coming towards him. I gave the car as much room as possible - he obviously hadn't seen the oncoming cyclist but he will have realised that I took a less defensive driving position to provide a lot more clear air between himself that the cyclist
3 / as i approached i saw two young men jump across the wall in front of the chippy and move towards the road so i had slowed down expecting them to run across in front of me. instead, they jump into the van...the driver however, doesnt look and then just opens his door without looking...so being rather annoyed (and thankful that i had slowed down) I gave the vehicle a wide berth and carried on my merry way - sheesh white van drivers however did they get licences

..........consider yourself fortunate that you are riding in the UK. If you were over here you would be very lucky not to have had at least one broken bone or worse die. I used to get VERY irate with drivers in Britain but, my God, they are all Nigel Mansells compared to the pond life here that have licenses. Then again a lot of them don't and many are curse word up to the eyeballs when they get behind the wheel. Brit drivers? Luv em.

Yeah, as has been said, a bike is invisible to most motorists. I've personally not had too much trouble, always ride with the headlamp on irrespective of the weather or time of day and always be vigilant, someone WILL come out of an intersection. I've had one close call where someone ran an intersection not looking properly and that's about it. The only other major I can think of was some curse word driving in front of me being slow and annoying talking to eachother 20-30km/h in a 59km/h zone. I had the advantage of being on an NSR so.. dropped it down, nail the throttle and popped the front wheel up between their cars and gone, they tried to chase but that wasn't going to happen.
My brother has had a more unfortunate incident where an old lady at a roundabout just pulled right on out, he collected her at the wheel, curse word his bike, he went rolling over her bonnett onto the road and she still thought it was his fault! The police were just as baffled as my brother and the rest of the witnesses.
To be honest, your bike is nothing greater than a scooter a glorified pushbike as it were, and by the sounds of it, a relatively slow one. I wouldn't try anything heroic, just leave things be and stay to the left and let people past. I had to do the same when I first started riding a godawful Suzuki ER185, that was a shocker that bike.

doesnt get any better, coz the bikes stopped working now! i love it lol, i can see what you're all saying. i have got a copy of road craft and need to read it. i suppose, in future i'll just let them on their way, but i don't like backing down (coz i is hard ) on the plus side, all my exams are over now so i'll be less tense anyway, and i promise to take what you're saying into consideration, but its hard to think so rationally when you're caught up in it like that. thanks all
