Joe, the minis reliability does put me off, but they look so fun fun and I keeping going back and looking at them. I want something I can drive and not worry about, don’t mind maintenance but not gearbox and steering failures. The 5 Series sounds good, funnily enough it was my Mrs buying a 3.0 manual bmw that made me think this is ace, I want a car again,
Geoff I will have some money for upkeep but a I’ve just wrote above, for things like brakes, tyres, not expensive failures. My supras and Celicas were very reliable. I wonder if the 1.5 swift would be a good choice. That little bit more power.

For the first time in ages I don’t own a car. I spend most of my time in my works van a vw caddy, my wife is happy enough for me use her bmw when I need to go anywhere, which is nearly always here when I’m home from work. But long term she will be changed from home working back to office working. I bring the works van home so I don’t commute, I just want something fun for weekends and evenings.
I’ve got a small list of stuff I like, most of it is around year 2000 to 2005, and £1000 to £1500 in price.
Mini Cooper, looks fun, good value, loads around Mini Cooper S, people say the supercharged engine is so addictive to drive, not loads in my budget but they do come up, but I hear they need a deep wallet for upkeep Suzuki swift 1.3 or 1.5, nice stylish car, reputation for being bulletproof Audi TT, never owned a petrol turbo, lots around in my budget Toyota Celica gen 7, Probably the 140 version, I owned 2 gen 5 models and loved them
A small part of me I also thinking should I go down the Audi A4 / mondeo / jaguar x type tdi route,
Anyone got any thoughts on the cars in my list? Any others of that age and budget that I’ve not considered?
Cheers

I had a 1.9 tdi a4 avant on a N reg. One of the best cars I’ve ever had. I only sold it to buy my wife’s dad’s bmw e30 to keep in the family and I wish I had kept it.
Are you into big bikes? I have a really nice 600 fazer here with only 13,000 miles on it, that I’ve just put up for sale.

Up for sale is my e30. It’s a 1988 318i. It was an auto when I got it 2 years ago and I got it converted to manual fairly soon after buying. Mot mid september. 80k Miles, but clocks say 100k as the old ones failed so had to buy used ones. I have the old ones here. On bottle top 14” alloys, but I have a spare set of steels with Bmw wheel trims. Drives nicely, solid underneath, but did have one bit of welding to one of the rear arches. Bodywork is good apart from a few small bits needing attention, nsr arch has got bubbly, front bit of bodywork in front of the osf wheel needs fixing, sorry I don’t know the names of bits, I’ve worked mainly on bikes not cars. Just had a new battery 2 weeks ago and last autumn it had new slave and master cylinders. 2 years ago when I got it, it had new rear brakes and lines. It’s a bit of a long story with this, but it was my wife’s dad’s car, and as part of a very complicated will, I bought it from the family after he passed away. Long term plan was to keep it in the family with us. But as things are, my Mrs has another Bmw, I have a company caddy, and since I started racing motorbikes this is just sat on the drive, It’s got to the point that I sometimes take it to do the shopping so it gets a run out. I’m a bit unsure of the value, as certain e30 models are going crazy but the base ones aren’t. No longer for sale. After some thought we gave the car to a family member.

Cheers for the replies, it’s now booked in for repair next week, I’m just trying to figure out what it could be, I’ve worked on bikes for 25 years but not done much work with cars and vans.

I have a really strange problem on my renault camper van. Its Modern van but there are some very useful people on here so wondering if anyone could help.
It's just failed it's mot, when the brake is pressed 3 calipers work. The near side rear doesn't move, but when the hand brake is used the caliper works fine so it's not a seized caliper. The brake line looks in good condition.
What would cause one caliper not to work?
It’s had the mot today, booked in for repair next week, I’m just puzzled as to what’s going on.

I ended up trying to check all the wiring, but I have limited knowledge with this. I found 2 sides of the relay connection to be live with 12v. I thought possibly the Earth was at fault so I ran a wire from what I I thought was the Earth on the relay to the Earth on the battery, when I did this the horn sounded. So for now I have ran a wire from 85 on the relay to the Earth on the battery. With this wire split and joined with a switch I can now turn the horn on and off. Not ideal at all but at least I can sound the horn from inside the car and it’s enough to pass the mot.

The horn has stopped working on the Mrs E36. I checked the relay and fuse, all ok. The local garage had a quick look one day and said there was no power coming into the relay.
Can I run a wire from the horn with a switch ? Is the relay actually needed? I just need a quick solution to get the horn working for it mot next week.

I called to my local garage on the way home and luckily the fella had just finished a re test and had nothing else in and he was happy to log onto his computer and spend a bit of time with me looking at mot rules for airbags.
I can’t recall the exact words, but it does say if the car was originally fitted with an air bag then it has to be present and working. So swapping to a non airbag wheel on a 1997 e36 isn’t going to work. We spent quite a while looking through it for anything to do with airbag lights. The obvious one is there, if it’s lit up showing a fault then it’s s fail. But the good news is there is nothing at all that covers the airbag light not working. So the bulb could be removed and the car will pass.

As far as the manual is concerned for the MOT, the light doesn't have to come on (advisory only for light inop), but any airbag or pretensioner gubbins obviously missing is a fail. Which to my mind, would imply fitting the non-airbag steering wheel would be ok, an aftermarket one with seperate boss would be a bit hazey Would the easiest answer to be just remove the airbag bulb? Can’t see any tester unbolting the dash panels to check if a bulb is missing.

The car is on a R reg, I think it’s a 1997. I hadn’t really thought that the seat belts would be linked into the system. I bet there’s a high chance that they are. I’m starting to think it might be better to try and get it looked at again. The first 2 times it’s been repaired were due to problems with wiring and sensors under the seats.

I was wrong, not all e36 came with an airbag. So we could possibly buy and fit this, and remove the airbag light.

Not sure of the exact wording and it might have changed now but was along the lines of it would be a fail if it was obviously missing. You could take that as if you fitted a genuine steering wheel that didn't have an airbag and no warning lights came up it wouldn't obviously be missing. If there was a gaping hole where the air bag should be then it's fairly obvious. I’ve googled what you have said, and I think the law seems to be, if the car was fitted with an airbag then it needs to be present and working. I think all e36s had air bags as standard so it looks like an aftermarket wheel is not going to be an option.

My wife has a bmw e36. The airbag light has came on a few times over the last couple of years. It’s been in twice for repairs and needed new SRS sensors. It’s now come back on again. A local mechanic plugged a fault reader into it and it was showing a fault with the airbag igniter. He said the repair would be quite expensive.
This got me thinking, I could remove the airbag steering wheel, fit an aftermarket wheel without an airbag and remove the airbag light. Would this pass it’s mot like this?

I'd say that's your best option to be honest. On the plus side, it's not likely to be a large payment for a single month. Yep it’s only £22. That’s the one good thing about having a direct debit option, you can pretty much tax it on and off if you want to use if for a couple of months and then put it away again.

Did you not have to make the first month's payment? If not, I'd suggest making the next payment, then cancelling. Otherwise they'll possibly start to try to reclaim that amount. Sorn it as soon as you're done using it though. Nope I haven’t made the first payment, because I taxed it on the 12th, they see it as being taxed from the 1st of the month. They take the first months payment on 26th April, and then May’s payment on May 1st. I think I’m probably best just paying it on the 26th and then sorning it and cancelling the direct debit at the end of the month.

How will they know you’ve used it? I would just cancel it They won’t know I’ve used it, maybe I worded it wrong, I should have said, will it flag up that it was taxed for 3 days but not paid for.

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this.
My e30 has been off the road since January. It’s still motd and insured. On Thursday (12th April) I taxed it and took it to my local garage for a little bit of work. Long story cut short it’s going to be off the road for a bit longer while I do more work on it.
I’ve had my direct debit schedule emailed to me from dvla. My April payment will be taken on the 26th of April, and every month onwards will be the 1st of the month. With it needing work I won’t be using it and I won’t need it taxed. So if I sorn it now and cancel the direct debit, I won’t actually pay for the 3 or 4 days it’s been taxed in April. If I do this will the dvla come after me for using it? Or would the safe option be to pay the first payment on the 26th and cancel the direct debit and sorn it then.
Does anyone know what the score is with this., ?
