Pretty sure I've seen a few bike carb'd motors on here so thought it a good place to ask. I have a 1.6 cvh lump which will be running Yamaha R6 38mm carbs hopefully once I fit it in my 1982 1.3GL Escort. I read a "how to" for a Vauxhall 2ltr XE lump where R1 (40mm) carbs were used and the main jets were drilled out to 1.8mm. It was noted that the same conversion for the 1.6 XE should have the jets drilled to 1.65mm but this is using slightly bigger carbs than mine so I'm wondering what size I need to drill mine to or indeed replace them with if that makes sense ? I'm curious as to how others have arrived at the optimum jet size for their conversions. Is it just a case of trial & error or must I get my car to a rolling road somehow ?

SJ's are THE best introduction to off roading wether you're on a budget or not. Excellent fun standard & there is a whole world of mod's you can do with very little experience, money, tools etc plus you get Japanese reliability thrown in with the deal. 1.6 vitara lump is almost a straight swap with an adaptor plate but the 1.3 is fine on the rough stuff. Even if you do manage to break it they are soooooo cheap to repair you will laugh. Might pay to have a whole spare car for parts just to be on the safe side. I paid £220 for this one many years ago. Did this to it, Then this, Then sold it for £1200 ! to make way for this, 2 of the best fun cars I have ever owned. There's a bit of off road snobbery from owners of "other" makes of 4x4 when you're in a li'l Suzuki but it's mainly jealousy coz your car can go places theres can't ! If you are getting or have got the off road bug then a Suzuki is a must but be warned, you may never find anything better in the mud if you sell it.

gasketsforclassics, ebay seller very pleasant over the phone & good prices for head sets. Turbo gasket is no thicker just better quality and fits non turbo lump no bother. There are a few little gaskets in the set which are specific to a fuel injected engine but you can live without them. Don't think you can measure piston/valve clearance without assembling it all. I had head skim & block face skimmed with standard 1.6 pistons with no bother. Just turned it over slowly with a socket on the bottom pulley with solid lifters fitted (& fingers crossed !). The engine I built last year is back out & on the stand awaiting another rebuild thanks to one of the above mentioned chocolate oil pumps. It has uprated piper followers, cvh22 cam, vernier pulley, +1mm rebore with AE pistons, standard crank/rods, ARP rod bolts, EN8 flywheel with bigger clutch, 16i head flowed by myself ! plenum chamber intake matched to XR4i throttle body & inlet ports matched to head. Just sold the 16i on Friday but I have a rock solid 1.3GL shell with a big hole ready for the rebuilt engine which will be running Yamaha R6 bike carbs. ;D

This bloke really knows his s**t regards cvh's mate, www.pumaracing.co.uk/CVH.htm con-rods are balanced with pistons off so best bet would be take 'em to a trusted engineering firm and ask them if they can be removed. ARP rod bolts are a must but I'm not keen on skimmed flywheels. I bought a beautiful EN8 steel one from a company on ebay for £150 delivered ! Much lighter & stronger (apparently). Just need to fit your old wheel's ring gear & they accept the bigger series 2 turbo clutch (220mm as opposed to 200mm). Please don't make the same mistake I did with your oil pump. Buy a standard ford one or high flow Burton one not cheap curse word ebay special. Looks like you have high comp' pistons to me ? 1300 cvh ones ? Careful they don't touch valves when it's all back together. Turbo head gaskets are much better than standard I find but 16i followers are a pain in the rear for adjustment. I have spanners for the job if you don't but Piper still do uprated hydraulic ones for just over 100 notes per set. Is the cvh33 cam compatible with solid lifters ? I'm rebuilding mine next year and will def' get crank/wheel/clutch balanced this time & rods. I'm sure 6.5K is perfectly safe for standard crank/rods so see no reason why 7k should cause any trouble with ARP rod bolts fitted if it's all nicely balanced ? Having said that, I would be happy with an engine that revs to 6.5 and no more if that's where it makes peak power. I think the 1.8 crank is a longer stroke so your engine would be less willing to rev with one fitted. Good luck with it all, I would be very interested to hear how you get on regards power output with your set up as I've just bought a set of Yamaha bike carb's to go on mine ! ;D

Pretty sure you will need your cbt which is around 140 notes with bike hire & gear then as you say up to 125cc without taking the full test. Law has changed a lot since I did it so I could be wrong though ? I bought a brand new Yamaha DTR125 (F reg) when I was 17. I'm 6 foot and at the time I didn't weigh much. Gutless standard but easily transformed into a motor cross sounding wheelie machine using nothing more than the bikes own tool kit ! ;D They have a power valve in the exhaust port which is stuck shut from the factory but turned 90 odd degrees into fully open position makes the bike scream like a 2 stroke should. That & a huge washer in the exhaust primary & mine did a genuine 90mph on standard gearing. They are fairly cheap these days, still look cool as fek and have a decent seat height so you won't look like a giant on it. Just watch out for rattles top end as they just beg to be caned in every gear thus shortening the life of piston, rings, bore etc. I used to race mates off road on mine and they had full on CR's, Yz's, Kx's etc and it never let me down. Buy one then thank me later.

Smoothness without is nice but they are a characteristic (spell) of the car IMO. I like it with them in place. Looks too much like a Delorean front end without !

standard RS 7 spokes always look good ? Orrrrrrr... . . Diamond cut 7 spokes ? (I'm selling these BTW). I've bought Mondeo ST alloys for my next mk3 project but not got pic's yet soz. If your standard clover leaf alloys are in good nik they would look lovely polished up like the Porsche rims above mate.

I bent 1 valve in one of my cvh heads from a sticking follower. Did comp' test to confirm before the head came off but it was only ever so very slightly bent. I put the offending valve in the chuck of my cordless drill, lay the drill on a bench and start it spinning slowly. Place a fixed object next to the valve head and you can just see where it touches in one place & not another as it spins. Very difficult to tell by eye without doing this I found. I use 3M or scotch pad on piston CROWNs to clean them up but not on the bores !

There is a restoration thread I started a while back for the rest of the car. I am putting a 1.6 lump in it so I need the loom to stay but if I don't need it for the new engine then your name is on it. Might be better if you collect so we can run through what you will & wil not need & maybe have a sniff through all my other mk3 bits to see if you want any of it ?

Brian200 I've got a 1.3cvh lump still in the car at the mo' if you're interested ? Don't want much for it. Car is an 82, 3 previous owners. It's just a shell now, bought it with no clocks so don't know mileage but the bloke I bought it off drove it home when he bought it and said it was sweet. All he did was nick panels off it, strip interior out & sell what was left to me. If you want it I will assist with removal. ;D

Just my tupence worth, serviced a 1.8 T spark few months back, plugs were a tenner each so there's 80 notes before I bought oil & filters ! MAF sensors are some silly price from Alfa (£270 rings a bell ?) but same sensor with warranty on ebay can be had for 30-60 quid depending on the model ! I do love the tan leather you get in some & their general quirkyness which you just don't get from all the other manufacturers.

Probably bad timing what with the way things are at the mo' so I am willing to take 2500 firm for the car with standard wheels. It was valued at 3K 18 months ago. Anyone ? If I'm honest I would much rather do a deal with someone for cash + a mo' bike coz if the witch knows I got cash she will want it put towards the new kitchen... . all of it ! So if yer interested like & you got a mo' sickle you want rid of try me. Preferably Yamaha. ;D

these blokes are very helpful regards fitting bike carbs to car engines. www.boggbros.co.uk/ I have just bought R6 38mm carbs & fuel pump for my 1.6 cvh engine based on their advice. I found that older bikes tend to have smaller carbs i.e. an fzr1000 exup from 93 would be roughly the same size as R6 from 2000. I should say 36mm would be plenty big enough for your engine.
