was after GSXR as they CV type carbs; with the butter fly, rather than just the shutter type... You sure you're not thinking of "flat slide" carbs bud ? Most run of the mill bikes had the butterfly as well as the slide. Flat slide carbs are a bit pricey & generally found on top notch stuff like the SP version of the YZF750. The R (mainstream) version would have normal carbs much like the majority of road bikes.

Well I have had no work again today so used the time wisely I think. Finished painting the frame 1st thing then whilst it was drying I bolted the lower frame rails to the engine then lifted it all in to place. Yay, it looks a bit more like a bike now & should only get better with time. ;D ;D ;D

Can't help identify those old things but I would seriously consider selling them on & buying something that was made in the last 20 years ! 30mm seems a bit small for a 1.6, Bogg Bros recommend 38mm for a 1.6cvh lump but you could keep your eye out for a set of Yammy thundercat carbs which are 36mm & generally much cheaper than R6 ones. Anything too old (yours) & you will struggle to refurbish them. I have an 87 FZ750 & original spares availability is getting to be a problem now. I bought 4 thundercat carbs for 20 quid plus post before christmas. A decent set of R6 carbs will be at least 60 notes.

Early 1.8LX's were pinto lumps & totally gutless. I had one on a C plate which was ok for motorway miles once wound up but wouldn't be my choice if looking for another Sierra. XR4i's hold their value & would be MY 1st choice but getting rare in good nik so maybe a 2.0ltr dohc number. Had one on a G plate which was a beaut to drive & fairly frugal if you were careful. Unfortunately like many of them the headgasket went on it.

Cheers familybanger. I like to think the TRX seat is slightly more modern & pleasing to the eye without looking out of place on my old shed. ;D R1 or R6 seat units look too new for a 1987 bike I think. Little update, I fitted the head this weekend & did loads of other stuff that isn't very obvious from these pictures but necessary all the same. Painted it, Fitted it, Fitted cam bed, cams & cover, Then removed the sump & right hand engine casing to inspect the DIY instant gasket which was oozing out everywhere. Found a crack in the casing & an oily rag in the clutch basket housing so that was well worth the extra effort ! I have replaced O rings & stuff, painted the starter, alternator, sprocket cover etc & just generally tidied stuff up if I could. I hope to have this in the frame by the end of the week so it looks like I have a bike again & not just loads of bike bits.

Another shout for the Shogun here. Mine was an old mk1 but still lovely to drive with the suspended drivers seat. Bit thirsty once you start messing with tyre sizes & raising suspension but you don't "have" to do that to them of course. Not the fastest car I've ever owned or the prettiest but I would seriously consider another (mk2 next time). Rugged, comfy, surprising amount of toys & Japanese reliability. Had an SJ413 before that but they are best described as "toy" cars in comparison to a Shogun. If she need to do any kind of distance then forget the Suzuki.

did the 4 pipes from heater box to dash vents sell with the dashboard ? Are 2 of them the pipes that direct air on to the windscreen ?

Cheers both. Not sure talent is a good description of what I've done to it. Ignorance perhaps ? I also have a 93 Fireblade which is road worthy & I intend to keep it that way by resisting the urge to tamper with it. I love having my bikes in bits as much as I enjoy riding them so the FZ is keeping me from messing with the Fireblade too much. Spent a few hours stripping & cleaning the replacement cylinder head last week. Also did a bit of tidying up around the inlet & exhaust ports but Yamaha do a pretty damn good job themselves so not a great deal for me to do there. Thanks to my cordless drill I managed to lap all 20 valves in last night in about an hour. ;D I will never moan about lapping 8 valves in on a CVH head again.

I'm fairly certain that this qualifies as retro & I'm making much more progress with it than my Escort so looky here then. Bought on a whim earlier this year as I fancied something (else) to get my hands dirty on & love my Yammy's. Saw the above picture of it on ebay (not the item for sale), made a few enquiries & 1 week later found myself bombing down the M5 to collect it from Burnham on sea in my van. At first I just took a few bits off it to see what was needed. The first thing that had to go was the skinny rear wheel & tyre so having found a forum dedicated to the FZ I discovered that the FZR1000 Genesis swinging arm was a straight swap & allowed for the wider FZR wheel so these items were duly purchased & fitted (loosely for now). Just wheel swapped for now looking better already with a 160 section tyre in place of the old skinny thing. I then hit on the idea of fitting my spare TRX850 seat unit in a bid to do away with the one thing I don't like about the FZ, the seat & side panel assembly so I plopped it on just to get a rough idea. Side panels were shafted anyway so it seemed like a good idea to me & in my unbiased opinion, looked very cool indeed from all angles. I know there is a huge chunk out of the FZR arm, it's inkeeping with the rest of the bike. FZR arm in place I wasn't liking the rear ride height so decided on some drastic rear subframe alterations. Purists look away now. With a Vee cut in each of the 4 rails in question I was able to bend the lot up to a better place. No measuring involved, just cut it & see. Up to now the bike has slept in a rented garage with no electricity, about half a mile from my house. This meant I had to crank up my old generator to power the angle grinders which was fine, but the next stage was obviously going to require welding so I needed a mains supply. Several pints of persuasion juice later & the FZ now lives in a mates garage where I can plug stuff in. Bike rehoused, I made this subframe at home using the seat unit as a jig. Then took it & the welder to mateys house & welded it to the FZ frame. The whole thing has evolved a bit since these pictures but you get the idea. ;D It took 2, half days before I was happy with all the lugs & brackets that were needed to house the stuff that hangs off the rear rails. Feeling pleased with myself I proceeded to spend most of my spare cash on bit n bobs I thought I would either want or need for it. Having recently sold my TRX I am still a regular on the forum which puts me in contact with several TRX owners & is a good source of reasonably priced spares. Here is my reasonably priced TRX seat, cunningly altered to fit my Frankenbike. R1 rear light with a few minor tweaks also fitted & reasonably priced TRX seat unit in place. Returning the TRX back to standard in order to sell it meant I had a lovely pair of FZR600 (foxeye) 41mm forks with Hyperpro progressive springs & new oil, a 17 inch wheel complete with tyre & discs, a pair of Yamaha R1 twin piston brake calipers & a YZF front mudguard all going spare. The lot was destined for ebay as the forks alone cost me £100, the springs £60, brakes £60 & so on but the FZ was crying out for better suspension & brakes so I looked at fitting all the good stuff to it. Standard FZ front end has 39mm forks, a 16" front wheel & really bad single piston brakes. Once again armed with info gleaned from the FZ forum I bought FZR1000 top & bottom yokes which were cleaned up & painted & bolted straigh in allowing me to fit my lovely front end. ;D I haven't got pictures of it on the FZ but here it all is on my old TRX. Whilst fitting the forks to the FZ I noticed for the very first time that the exhaust studs were either missing or weren't studs at all but bolts which went in to the cylinder head at varying angles thanks to someone who should never be allowed anywhere near a drill ever again. Sorry for the long sentence but it's getting late. The exhaust was only ever loose fitted as I bought the bike "spares or repair" so didn't take much notice of it. Obviously this was going to be a problem further down the restoration road so I have removed the engine now & took the oportunity to strip the bike back to a bare frame (which didn't take much) in order to paint it properly. For 50 notes I recently bought a spare engine from a guy on the FZ forum & have relieved it of its cylinder head which is now stripped & waiting for me to lap the valves in.. . all 20 of them. This was supposed to be a cheap & cheerful restoration so I would have a winter hack & not ruin my Fireblade but to date it has cost me nearly 1500 quid & is no where near being finished ! What's worse is I have just collected "another" basket case FZ today, also bought from ebay & in worse condition than the one I'm restoring. I may need help but at least I'm happy.. . until the missus finds out. ;D I hope at least 1 person finds this thread slightly interesting. It will help to make the 2 hours I've spent typing it out seem worth while.

Get arsey with Auto windscreens & demand they fit you a new one regardless of wether it will pass an mot or not. Not an mot inspector so not going to comment there but it's never going to "explode" or shatter but that's not the point. You're owed a new screen from the people or person who broke yours.

I will give this a free bump in the hope that someone (other than me) buys it & puts me out of my misery. Never had an Audi & don't normally like red cars but this is really floating my boat. So much more attractive when they have been well looked after & unmolested. Is the silver G reg' coupe in the background yours too ?

I bought my regulator from Jawels, paint supplier near me. Cost about 25 quid but I'm going back 6 or more years ago. Welder is at a mates so I can't look but as I recall it came with several fittings, 1 of which was suitable for my pub C02 cylinder. I don't remember buying anything else in order to hook my pub gas up to my mig. I have swapped the whole lot over to another welder since then with no bother.

Time for a bump. Pulley & followers on ebay now. Head, rocker cover, plenum chamber, XR4i throttle body still available. I've got cranks, blocks, standard RS16i head, brand new dizzy, nearly complete XR3i engine with inlet & exhaust manifolds still attached, drive shafts, series 2 turbo discs & calipers all available.
