after a bit of running I am happy with this engine, its leaking no oil or water or smoke.
I haven't had a timing light on it but its running ok though the dizzy adjustment is maxxed out advanced beyond crazy... I might do a compression test to try and work out what compression ratio this piston/head combo is giving, besides all that it seems to run well.
I just cleaned the air filter today and retuned the carb and timing to compensate. I also re connected the PCV piping so I don't have to breath the crank case vapours any more. its running better than ever.
The exhaust system is falling apart so I ordered a new one while I'm flush £140 all in including fitting!
NB> today whilst out in the Mule I spotted a WW2 jeep coming my way canvas top and knees sticking out the side!! got a wave, it was an early ford one I think. Later on I spotted an old but shiny landy open top with about six up out enjoying the sun, got a wave off them too.

I've sorted it now, I stuck the head off the old engine on.
It runs great now, no oil or smoke and I had it up to 70 mph!! (yikes)

for removable parts I have found malt vinegar is excellent, you can buy it for £2.50 a gallon, stick the rusty part in for 24 hours and just brush it off after under the tap.
I was wondering if it would work on body panels if you soaked a rag in vinegar and stuffed/wrapped it around.

Finally got the little mule running again, I stuck a replacment engine in but the head was buggered, swapped the old engines head in but it would't fire depite all things being correct, swapped the dizzy leads round and it works better than ever, no oil drips or blue smoke. ;D Went for a tootle about in the sunshine to celebrate and then got onto the van. It hasn't been touched since November when I used it to go and view a morris eight for my dad, it was a cold salty road I drove and I was worried about salt getting on the new paint so I jetwashed the van off before putting it away but journey from the jetwash to the garage was salty too so the van rested up covered in salt Anyway, after a jump start she fired up and I only needed borrow the use of the neighbouring workshops compressor to pump up the front tyres before heading home. Gave it a good wash and rinse, quick polish of the slots and take it out to dry it off Got some nice waves and smiles and stopped to chat to a bloke with a mint black 2.0 capri. also got a good wave off a bloke sitting by his se7en eating some chips. I had a big grin on my face by this point. It was good day to be out enjoying the sun by the riverside. Still got loads to do on the van, a few pinstripes, new carpet and some more cabinets, new waterpump too. need to jack up the rear end a little too Sorry I didn't get any pics of the capri. But heres a snap of my truck, Our kittah thought it was a good day too.. all topped off with bbq spare ribs, chips and beer. A good day. ;D

My friend and I fitted the engine on wednesday at my friends house, it went in ok with no probs but would not run well, sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders. Did the obvious pull the ht leads test, all firing. Drove home and the next day pulled the plugs and did a compression test. No compression on number 4. Today, pulled the cambelt cover and double checked the timing belt and checked/adjusted the valve lash, still nothing. I pulled the head, I noticed the pistons were 16 valve ones!! Anyway, the head "looks" ok, and there is no hole in number 4 piston. I suspect the inlet valve on number 4 is bent. Anyway, I was a little alarmed to notice the 16 valve block but thought it was worth trying the 8 valve head off the engine I took out on Wednesday. I fitted the head but it wont start, I'm pretty certain I got the cam timing and dizzy set right (both crank and cam pulley pointing up to the TDC marks and the dizzy pointing to number 1, I've got the belt cover off so I can see whats going on.). I removed the inlet manifold with all hoses and the carb still attached and refittd it all without disturbing it. There is no sign of a splutter nevermind starting, I've tried throwing some petrol into the carb throat to see if it helps but still nothing. Have i not seen the woods for the trees here? is there a way of getting the dizzy or cam 180 degrees out?? or any other reason for this not to work? maybe its the head/block combo. PLEASE HELP! On another note, I was interested to see the engine I got last year (again of ebay (I have am now learning to check things over as a matter of course)) has had the wrong cam belt fitted. It has a square tooth belt fitted on round tooth pulleys The old engine has covered about 8000 miles since I fitted it last year. It never seemed right, ran rough and was very smokey but I lived with it. One time about 2 months ago the accelerator pedal got jammed open and the engine ran at about 7000+ rpm for a few seconds which resulted in a loud rattling sound, I suspected the gearbox bearings but a local garage suggested the bottom end bearings were knackered. It turned out the rattling noise was the flywheel coming loose        All the bolts were loose, two were only held in by the clutch plate, all the threads on the bolts and in the crank are fubar'd So if anyone has any suggestions.......

So I took the little mule over to my mates place and we swapped the engines today, As the bloke I go the engine off said it was leaking at the rear so I fitted a new rear crank seal and rear cover gasket, also refitted the dizzy seal we fitted the engine and ran it, it was a bit hard to start and leaked oil from the rear end, it turned out the rocker cover gasket had been fitted badly by the previous owner, even after fitting that, it seems to be leaking oil from the fuel pump still, I need to fix that, lucky I had a spare rocker cover gasket so I fitted that, the engine runs though its not right, seems to be firing on three only though the plugs look ok, I'll do a compression test, timing light and I need to check the valve lash and run it some more. turns out it was a good time to check the tightness of the flywheel bolts.... They were all loose even though I torqued them up when I fitted the engine, two were only held in by the clutch plate... Also looks like the old engine was leaking some oil.. Quick test run.. The journey home was nice in the evening spring air....

oooh yeah, a lwb really makes more sense than a swb, especially for work.
I wouldn't mind a removable hardtop truck cab with dropside lwb.

I have considered using an ldv pilot engine and box but is a lot of work compared to a straight swap.
He put it up for £2000 to start with so may come down further.

How long til the mule hits the road again? Well I went and fetched the engine, it was in Portsmouth (why is it that 99% of ebay things are at the other side of the country?) 180 miles each way, so I got up early (3.30 am) drove in the trusty old corsa and arrived at the dudes house at just gone 7. Its done 104,000 miles had a snapped cambelt but no damage. compression test on head, head skimmed and refitted with new hg and belt. It was one of those bids where beer was involved, fingers crossed it will run ok and give me some summertime open top motoring. I really want to build up my other engine. I should just get off the intarwebs and crack on with clearing my shed and doing it. I also need to fit a new waterpump to the van aswell before we go anywhere in it as the old one has a worn bearing but holds coolant. BTW MDH! did you notice that modded LJ on the bay?? cgi.ebay.co.uk/1981-SUZUKI-LJ-80-GREEN-sj413-sj-sj410-/160566839442?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2562878892

Well my truck has been off the road for a couple of months because the bottom end packed up, it still runs but its VERY NOISY! I have been using my old corsa to get about but its not holding up well to having loads of tools and curse word chucked in it all the time. I have been meaning to finish building the engine I started last year but have been too busy, so with the summer coming and my insurance on the corsa coming up for renewal I want to get the truck going. I got an engine off ebay this weekend for £10.50 I also got this wheel of an MG and fitted it today. To save the effort of making a centre from scratch I used an old cam belt pulley, it works ok and suits the rest of the interior much better than the suzuki one.
