Also, I went to my Nans for dinner this evening. My Grandad passed away about three months ago and she’s been going through his things and offering various bits to family members that she thinks might like them. She went off to my Grandads wardrobe and came back with his favourite jacket. My Grandad worked as a mechanic for an Austin and later Rover main dealer from around the late 70’s to when he retired in the late 90’s. This jacket was given to him by the director of the company when they changed over to Rover and he kept it all that time. It’s in amazing condition, same as anything else my Grandad owned, and it fits me really well! I was really chuffed when my Nan offered it to me and although it says Rover I think it will be a nice thing to wear at car shows when I take the Metro. It’s weird to think that my Grandad would’ve been carrying out PDIs on these little Metros when they were brand new!

Nice. The Minilite alloys really suit it. I wasn’t sure about them when I first saw the ad but I agree now. They definitely suit it.

Afternoon Some of you will recall my E28 5 Series I bought about a year ago and was using as my daily driver. It was doing a sterling job until July this year when it decided it was tired and promptly got rid of as much compression as it could Since then it's been parked in my Nans garage waiting for me to get round there and start stripping the engine. Here's the thread for those that haven't read about it before - forum.retro-rides.org/thread/220113/oap-85-525e-plans-afootIn the mean time I picked up a reasonably new MINI Cooper S. Not a bad car but not as quick as I was expecting it to be, terrible on fuel and the seating position makes my hip ache! Not ideal. I told Mrs Sammo about this and she agreed that I should get rid of it and get something else. Once she had uttered those immortal words it was time to start looking around for a replacement As much as a modern daily makes lots of sense (plus the ULEZ is probably being extended very close to where we live next year), I couldn't help looking at something old again After a few days of looking longingly at classis Minis that I couldn't afford the idea of a Metro popped into my head. My parents had one when I was a kid and I loved it. When they had finished with it my Grandad took it over and ran it for another 10-15 years until there was no bodywork left! That was 25 years ago when he scrapped it so trying to find a solid one these days was going to be challenge, especially with my relatively meagre budget. Anyway, I started searching all the usual places and found plenty of slightly corroded candidates and a hell of a lot of Metro shaped sieves Eventually I spotted this little beauty on Facebook marketplace. Only 7000 miles from new, absolutely rock solid all the way round and one of the earlier ones. Just what I wanted. The only problem is it's automatic, however I can live with that and I'm buying it based on the condition of the bodywork rather than anything else. So here it is I'm not entirely sure what's going on with the speckled interior trim but it won't be staying like that for long! It's a 1275 engine with 62bhp. Plenty of power to get me the five miles to work and then home again I've already got my eye on another 1275 block to build up into something with a bit more oomph and a manual gearbox, but that won't be any time soon. Anyway, that's it for now. The car is being delivered to me next week at which point I'll break the news to Mrs Sammo (who hates old cars) and then I can get the MINI sold.

Spotted this old ambulance while taking the dog for walkies last weekend. I’ve driven past this loads of time over the last year or so but never been able to stop to take a picture. I finally walked past the other day so stopped for a quick snap.

A couple of months ago on the way back from my Grandads funeral the OAP started running like curse word! I just about managed to limp it home with absolutely no power and promptly parked it up. Roll on to last weekend and I got the car over to my Nans house and into the garage. I started checking the various ignition components which were all ok. I chucked another set of plugs in just to rule them out and the car was still coughing and spluttering. I also decided to drain the fuel out and put some fresh in, again just to rule it out as an issue. That also made absolutely no difference! Next step was to carry out a compression test. Unfortunately it would appear the engine has next to no compression on a couple of cylinders. The next step will be to take the head off and see what’s gone wrong. I’m assuming it’s either a burnt out valve or worn piston rings. I have decided to start documenting it all on YouTube as well as updating this thread. I’ve never done YouTube videos like this so bare with me haha.

E34 seats? When I had an E34 I went the other way, bought some sport seats that had been in an E28 and had to have the brackets welded on 😅 Those are the ones. I seem to recall the last E34 I sat being very comfortable so these better live up to my expectations

Ever since I bought the OAP I haven’t been happy with the seats. They’re bloody uncomfortable and if I’m in the car for more than an hour then I start to get back ache etc. I’ve been wanting to replace with something a bit more supportive. As much as I’d love a set of BMW sports seats they’re well out of my price range. These E34 seats popped up on Facebook yesterday so I did some reading up and found they would fit with some very minor tweaks! So today I went and collected them. These are the seats They need a bit of a clean first and then I’m going to get some brown fabric dye for them so they sort of match the rest of the brown interior. It’ll bug me if they stand out! To be able to fit them I need to remove this bracket from each seat rail and elongate the hole underneath very slightly. Once all the brackets have been removed I just need a long M10 countersunk bolt and a spacer under the rail to lift the front of the seats up slightly, and Bobs your Uncle!

Driving licence renewal.Sammo

I had to renew mine a couple of years ago and had also read about people losing their motorcycle entitlement when renewing. I kept photocopies of my licence showing the entitlement, did an online licence check which showed the entitlement and wrote a letter explaining what I was entitled to drive/ride. I included the licence check and letter in with my renewal paperwork and had no problems.
From what I’ve read if your licence comes back missing something that you previously had it’s very difficult to get the DVLA to admit they’ve made a mistake and amend your licence.

Just a couple that I’ve spotted recently. Not sure if this Cresta gets used or not to be honest.

Spotted this Vauxhall Cresta when I was out walking the dog a couple of weeks ago. The guy had a load of old Land Rovers on his driveway too. I wasn’t sure if this was more suited to the abandoned thread so I might post it in both!
