After a last minute panic where the washers decided not to work I managed to get a pump from Euros for a tenner and then dropped the car off for its MOT.
Amazingly it passed with no advisories!! The MOT tester said he couldn't find a single thing wrong with the car and it was in much better condition than a lot of the much newer cars he tests biggrin

The new HT leads finally turned up after a six week wait! I fitted them straight away and thankfully the misfire went. The car is still feeling sluggish but I can live with that for now! The MOT is due today and I know that the lower wishbone bushes are split enough to be a failure. So on Saturday I came into work and got the car up on a ramp. It took me all day due to seized nuts and balljoints that decided to just spin but I eventually replaced the lower wishbones with E31 8 Series arms (these have a spherical ball joint instead of a rubber bush) which are a recommended upgrade, and the track control arms with Moosehead Engineering UCAB bushes. While I was under there I also replaced the ARB drop links and one track rod that was well past its best! The difference in the feel of the steering is amazing. Plus the car actually goes where I steer it now. Fingers crossed for the MOT later today!

I know I’ve taken a picture of this one before but they’ve trimmed the hedge so it’s a little more visible. I still want it haha! Before, when it was part of the hedge! Yesterday when it’s looking a little less hedgey!

I finally got around to having my new tyres fitted today. The ones that the car came on had plenty of tread but were cheap budget tyres that weren’t exactly grippy! Plus they were the wrong size which meant the fronts would rub occasionally and the steering was ridiculously heavy. Anyway, the new Michelin tyres are much better and the correct size

Yesterday I crawled the OAP to work while also deafening everyone Once there I chucked it on a ramp and this is what greeted me! That’ll explain it sounding rather loud!! Later in the day one of the body shop guys dragged his welder into the workshop and did his best to weld the rust back together! I then slathered it in Gun Gum to seal the bits he couldn’t weld and was left with this. Obviously it’s not a pretty repair but it’s completely sealed and sounds nice again. Strangely the misfire has now vanished as well!

The car has decided to test my patience this week! I wanted to change the spark plugs as the NGK plugs that were fitted were the incorrect ones. I bought a set of the correct Bosch plugs and fitted them the other day. On the way home the car started misfiring occasionally and smelling rather fuelly! I nursed it along for a couple of days as it was still driveable and did a bit of googling and checked on the E28 Facebook groups. A few people suggested I fit a set of NGK plugs as they seem to work better in some of the 525e models despite being the incorrect plugs. So yesterday I fitted a set of the suggested NGK plugs and it's made no difference I've ordered a set of HT leads as I suspect it's one of those giving up but they're going to be a week or so to arrive! To add insult to injury I was meant to be taking the car to an exhaust fabricator on Thursday to have a new exhaust made which I've had to cancel and then just to make things worse the car decided to backfire this morning when it misfired and blew a hole in the already ropey sounding exhaust So it now runs like a sack of curse word and sounds like a bloody stock car!

I’m never going to get around to finishing this so it’s time for it to go. 1999 VW Caddy 1.6 Petrol - V5 AQN Conversion Project. Have a look here to see what I’ve done forum.retro-rides.org/thread/201579/caddy-van-vr5-project-pedalsComes with; AQN Conversion already fitted. V5 ECU has been de-immobilised and had the EGR and external air pump removed from its memory. Wiring loom has been converted. A few loose wires to be connected in the engine bay (comes with instructions on where they go). Mk3 Golf 16v downpipe ready to be fitted. VR6 fuel pump ready to be fitted. Billet aluminium oil filter/cooler relocation plate so a remote oil filter and cooler can be fitted in the bay. VR6 gearbox with solid flywheel and clutch kit fitted. DBW throttle pedal fitted and wired in. O2J shifter and cables fitted into original position. G60 front brake conversion with brand new EBC discs and pads. Black Diamond braided front brake hoses. Front subframe has been poly bushed using Powerflex bushes. AP front coilovers with non seized collars and brand new top mounts fitted. Brand new Koni adjustable rear shocks ready to fit. Replacement flipped rear axle ready to be built up and fitted. Cades Jadis 15 inch alloys with brand new Toyo tyres fitted. Mk3 Golf VR6 front seats fitted in excellent condition. Polo saloon black dashboard fitted. Mk3 Golf silver clocks fitted. Electric window conversion ready to be fitted. Requires the wiring to be finished up, tidied up and ECU fitted. Exhaust downpipe to be fitted and an exhaust system made. Remote oil filter/cooler to be bought and fitted. Driveshafts fitted. Cooling system plumbed in. That’s about it. Could realistically be running in a couple of weekends. The van does look tatty from the outside but is solid in all the right places. It’s never failed an MOT on corrosion and was only taken off the road because the 1.6 was absolutely knackered! I’ll be sorry to see this go but I’m just never going to get around to finishing it. As far as I’m aware it’ll be the only AQN converted Mk2 Caddy out there! I’ve spent an absolute fortune on this already so someone will get a bargain! I’m asking for £1500 with everything listed above plus anything else I find when I’m clearing through all my stuff. I’m sure there are other bits I’ve bought that I’ve forgotten about. I’ll consider a swap/px for something small and fuel efficient. The van is in Epsom, Surrey, KT19.

When I first bought the OAP I fitted my reasonably modern Alpine CD player with an Amazon Echo Auto. It’s done the job absolutely fine but it’s always bugged me that it’s not in keeping with the age of the car. A couple of years ago I bought an Alpine cassette player to fit into another car but never got around to it. To be honest I’d forgotten I even owned it! Anyway, I’ve fitted it into the OAP this morning and it looks much better I’ve got a cassette converter so I can still use my Echo Auto and have digital radio in the car as well!

Those back lights are a bit random, they look vandalised ?! James My thoughts exactly! Seems very odd that they’re the only thing to be damaged though.
