Facial reconstruction... No not me... the car, I actually spent some time on the damn car!* *albeit it was only a brief pitstop while the wife dealt with her four legged friend - the facial reconstruction will be for me if I don't finish the kitchen soon! So what did I do with my brief period of playtime? Well I decided to trial fit the new brackets (see above for old rusty versions) and see whether the recently acquired bumper in-fill panels were any good. In short, the answer was yes, the new centre bracket is spot on and aligns where it should but as you can see some facial reconstruction is going to be needed as that centre panel is not pretty! As a wise man once said "Good from far, far from good..." Asides the bent grill (need to work out how to sort that in due course as a replacement is serious £££!), the centre panel also has a slight twist meaning that the screw holes aren't quite in line. I do have a spare that you can see on top of the engine but again it's pretty warped with some holes for spotlights for some reason. Will have to see if I can make a good one from both. I think the best approach will be to assemble everything including the bumpers etc to get everything aligned properly, then permanently affixing the front fitch panels before stripping everything back off for repairing and paint prep etc. A bit laborious maybe but not sure of another way. Have a closer shot showing some of the 'facial issues'! Apologies for the bad pics, the light and temperature was rapidly dropping at this point so it was time to get everything back together and get out of there. So a few more questions than answers arising but still it was some progress. Let the parts hunt continue. Onwards!

Another minor thread diversion, but fear not - there is Celica content! This weekend brought with it the usual array of house-based activity, we're oh so close now though so the finish line is in sight, just awaiting a few parts from the suppliers. As a special birthday treat, for it was my birthday last Sunday , SWMBO kindly gave me the day off so we decided to have a random escape before the standard birthday offering of tea and cake to the relatives and friends who wanted it. I was handed the keys to the Abarth (a real rare treat!) and told to drive in a random direction (via the country roads obviously!) So where did we head?
For those familiar with the area there is a well-known brewery located there (seems to be another underlying theme on this thread...see above for Ludlow...): So with no massive grand plan other than a nice lunch, and having never really visited Lewes before other than to spectate the annual fireworks (google it, it's something else!), we just decided to have a wander and see where our meanderings took us. As it happens, straight to a flea market of some description where amongst the many stalls was one selling military artefacts. This was part of it: I can't profess to be massively into bikes, but it looked fun in an uncomfortable way... on another stall amongst some beautiful wood carving tools, there were these: At £45 a go they were a little expensive for me just to have a little fun with, particularly as I already had a couple of things in my mind that I wasn't going to leave Lewes without... Another familiar sight in Lewes, and towns of similar feel, are the plethora of antique and collectables shops, I say shops, think warehouses full. Now as it happens I quite like mooching round these, most contain items far too expensive and of some dubious taste in my view, but on the odd occasion something catches my eye that I try and have a haggle on, this is exactly what happened on Sunday. Whilst browsing one particular place surrounded by suits of armour, random taxidermy monsters (really!) and the usual tin toys from yesteryear, I spotted a couple of pleasing dials. Well to my eye anyway. After a bit of bartering, they were in the bag and coming home to sit on the pillar in the new kitchen. They are British made and nautical, but that's about all I know. With little else taking our fancy, after a nice lunch in a recommended eatery (thanks trip advisor), it was back home via the celica for a spot of present unwrapping. Remember the box from Canada? Well I cheated a little and although the kitchen isn't finished I decided that as it was my birthday I'd do a spot of unwrapping. This is what was inside, oiled to prevent rusting and very well wrapped Very pleased with them, I also snatched some time to test fit the NOS front valance I picked up earlier in the year - sort of hidden behind the lower lip spoiler but look closely and you'll see it - ties everything together nicely by bolting back to the fitch panels. In other news I got a couple of entertaining presents Folk obviously think I have spare time on my hands - One day perhaps...

I'm assuming that there is no vin plate/tag on the passenger A-pillar? There are a couple of other places where you can check for info, but can't remember off the top of my head, under rear seat may be another.
Ultimately the best place to perhaps ask is the A35 owners club as they have pretty comprehensive records so may well be able to tell you.
Whereabouts down south are you?

From experience last thing I would do is blast a shell / panels that have emerged from the far east built in this era (they were using thinner grade steels in vehicle production far earlier than the rest of world were) Hence outer panels are very easily deformed by the blasting process - The thing to do is have it dipped by the right company again from experience 'Envirostrip' at Tamworth is the company to use Interesting point this, and something I'd not even considered with regards to my Toyota which is of a similar vintage. I might have a chat with Envirostrip at the NEC in March, otherwise it's out with the orbital sander. Slightly more on topic, am watching this one with interest - best of luck!

Well another year and another set of car related resolutions - a belated Happy New Year all! Thought I'd chuck in another (non-car) related update while still awaiting some free time to get near the toys., but fear not some calls have been made to progress some areas, there may also be a couple of exciting developments on the horizon... Christmas was busy, when I say busy I mean non-stop... till the early hours most nights. Despite thinking it would put me to the point of exhaustion, I'm crediting this for the reason I didn't get ill at all despite all around me falling to the clutches of Australian flu or shingles... not nice! I did have a brief respite for Christmas with a trip to the rents and in-laws, some fun was also had... Anyone for Curling? The bus was pressed into service for SWMBO's latest acquisition... another distraction that has four legs and fluffy ears... and of course, lots more progress was made on the house. I'm almost ashamed to say I didn't leave the house at all some days, although given the state of the weather I wasn't complaining about that at the time! Under-floor, boarding finished Rather a lot of painting into the early hours... with a rather apt beer to assist Did find a new application for my car wrap though - protecting the boiler from paint spots Unfortunately mid way through the holidays the garage roof decided that it would leak all over the new kitchen which was safely stored within it, nothing for it but to bring it all in to prevent any further damage I did get a little distracted one day, deciding to make a small table out of the bit of bamboo worktop I cut for the sink in the utility room Eventually the kitchen slowly started to come together Just the sink side and all the little finishing jobs to do before I move on to the dining room then flooring. Although given it's my birthday at the end of the month I think some well deserved car time may be on the cards in the interim... remember those sills from Canada All the best for 2018 whatever you may have planned.

I'll be attending again, have done for the last 3 years, i find it a really enjoyable show.
I was hoping to get the Celica there on the Toyota stand but looks like it'll have to wait for another year. Will make sure I pop by and say hello Chris.

^^^^^^^^^^^ couldn't have put it better myself. Best of luck with this afternoons efforts, although having watched the rest come together you most certainly don't need it. I however am working from home today and so having already fixed the roof it'll be on to a spot of plumbing in my lunch break before back to the mundane until this evening where the interesting stuff will continue. I just wish it was on one of my cars rather than the house!

8 years does sound long doesn't it? As Chris has basically outlined above, and without going into too much detail, life has essentially played it's part. It's my brothers vehicle that I got hold of for him while he was still at uni. Anyhow circumstances change etc and all the while the vehicle has been sat awaiting it's turn for, as previously mentioned, the supposed best in the business. As you can imagine, brother has become disillusioned by the whole thing and is almost refusing to do anything about it, he's lost his mojo big time and will no longer pick up the phone. Hence it has fallen to the slightly more stubborn older brother to get involved again. This year is the year something gets done - in fact they may be getting another call today... On the flip side, me being one to always try and look for a positive, you could say it's been worth it for storage and the fact that this vehicle has risen in value considerably since it was bought. Would be nice to use it though...

==== In relation to this Jowett though, the thing for me is... I do have to question how wise it was to leave a car with somebody for 18 months without checking in on progress. Think I can top that by some margin - try nearly 8 years... (not sure whether to laugh or cry on this one!) I won't go into full details as there are circumstances around this and the individual is on this forum, plus in fairness it's not been that amount of time without contact... although even that has gone quiet the last few months. Unfortunately every time contact has been made there is a new excuse as to why there hasn't been progress, I could and probably should write a book on them. The guy was supposed to be the best in the marque and had produced several centre-show display vehicles, hence the desire to hang on until 2018... sadly the time has come and one empty promise after another will instead mean that 2018 will see me going up there with my trailer and pulling this one away to be done elsewhere.

Errr another highly imaginative one...
Sam - real first name TA22 - Model number of my Celica. Mainly as it's probably my first properly 'Retro' car despite owning a few others of varying vintages.

Anyone miss me "More on the Celica soon"... ha ha, those were fateful last words! It's been a bit of a rollercoaster since my last update and sadly there's been no Celica time, or any car time come to think of it In fact this is the current state of the MG, well and truly tucked up! By way of an explanation, and for my sanity to jot down exactly why I've not managed to have any real car play time of late, allow me to explain what I've been up to. Shortly after my last post there was a rather early start one saturday and a trip down to Eastbourne for dad and I... Specifically we were headed to the west side of town for a little outing I thought was a good idea in the pub one eve (how often have we all done that!) The start set the tone: steeply up straightaway... What followed was by far the most beautiful race I've ever taken part in, a stunning run around and over the south downs (those are some decent hills!), stupidly I didn't take any photos while running round but have one showing the end result - I survived! The next day it was time to kick off the next project - demolition of kitchen... all in preparation for some minor works in order to remove this ill-fated wall in order to open the house up a little between the kitchen and dining room ...little did I know what it would turn into! More on that in a minute however, as the following weekend bought with it another distraction - London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Sadly I wasn't taking part this year, instead the mrs and I decided to head off to the top of Reigate Hill to spectate. We ended up at the tea room just off the top of the M25, a beautiful spot well worth visiting if you are passing With house jobs in the back of our mind we departed mid morning, sadly we later heard of an accident involving one of the participants further down the hill where the driver died. Horrendous for all involved and very sad indeed. Back to the house, and after some major reworking of the electrics and plumbing (joys of old houses!), the major demolition took place... oh the dust! including finding this rather sizeable chunk of concrete that shook the house when it landed Debris cleared (see MG pic) and it was onto some of the more fiddly jobs that take the time - including the discovery of various areas of damp (did I say I loved old houses...), and some delights of the electrical nature ...that's a cable in a very rusted conduit pipe, even better were the ones I found encased in concrete in the floor... The dining room also got pulled apart I suspect @grumpynorthener will agree from his experiences shown on his SWMBO's Vehicle Project Progress Prevention Scheme thread, doing jobs like this and rectifying others bodges, especially the fiddly parts, takes hours and hours. Coupled with trying to get things done at a pace that appeases SWMBO, means I'm sitting here feeling somewhat broken after another non-stop weekend - I actually didn't leave the house yesterday and I've not even got to the 'fun' joinery bit where you can at least see it coming together That said, progress is happening and we are looking in much better shape We also have heating and hot water again! Despite the best efforts of the wood burner, coming down in the morning to the house being a heady 2 degrees was a delight I won't miss. What I also haven't shown you is the upheaval upstairs also where rooms have been emptied and flooring pulled up in order to run cabling and pipes, thankfully that is now coming together also and some flooring has gone back down enough for paint to be put on the walls and the underlay roughly put down so you can go to the bathroom at night without fear of falling through the ceiling! Here's a little clue showing how exciting it got More plaster going on the walls and some more damp to deal with tonight when I get home from the day job - deep joy! Anyway, waffle/story over, sorry it's bit of a thread diversion but it's all good fun - variety is the spice of life as they say! As a brief bit of car related excitement, while all the above was going on a long awaited parcel turned up from a Canada courtesy of a fellow Gen 1 Celica owner on another forum. Inner sill panels that he's managed to make like the originals. Much better than simply plating the sills together to make do in my opinion. For the time being though the box is staying well and truly sealed and will be opened as a treat when I next get onto the car. Until then... Onward!

Stunning work on all fronts Chris, really coming together now. Not quite on the same scale, but I'm in the same situation at the moment knocking our kitchen and dining room into one, albeit our place dates from c1900 - still solid 9" thick walls though! Lots of 'findings' everyday at the moment and trying to appease the boss! How it was: Once opened up: Some of the many 'delights' buried, although I should be grateful, a lot were just encased in plaster! The long since hidden original fireplace: One thing I've got to ask - how come you ran the cables shown below diagonally? I've always been told it's something you should never do so for my own sanity was there a reason
