Hi Again! Well if the Mitsubishi Sapporo wasn’t enough of a challenge for me...I’ve gone and done it again! This time I have found a very…very! rare 1978 Mitsubishi Colt Celeste GSR! I am over the moon to own this car, I saw it quite a while ago and eventually managed to get it. It is a one owner car with just 30,000 miles on it and has been standing in one spot for over 28years! Unfortunately as you can see she is a bit frilly round the edges! Of course no body panels are available ( even worse than the Sapporo!!) and I have no spares with the car. This will not deter me as I really want to see this back on the road in one form or another! (more on that later)
The best bit is the interior! As mentioned before at just 30,000 miles its hardly been sat in and I’m hoping with a bit of cleaning it’s gonna come up like new! Yea a couple of rips in the vinyl but that’s nothing. Amazingly most of the panels are pretty good and I’m sure can be saved…... apart from that bonnet! I might have to try and save it, but if anyone knows where I can get one or knows someone who knows someone that used to talk to a bloke in the pub…..you get where I’m coming from I would be very grateful to hear from you! Plus a front bumper! Yes I know I could find a hundred hens teeth before I find a bumper but you never know! Oh and as for the (more on that later!) I’m thinking that this will be more of a rolling restoration than the Sapporo, so it may be back on the road let’s just say looking a little “ratty” until funds allow the paint it so deserves! Anyway enjoy the pics!

What a find! Is there a story behind it, namely why it stood outside for 28 years in a bush?

LOVE a Celeste! This is better than the last one I saw many, many moons ago. Someone had launched one off the road near my school, and it had landed in a wooded area where it had been abandoned about 100 yards from the road in thick undergrowth. Sadly I don't have pictures but it was NOT pretty!!
Have bookmarked this - looks fascinating!

Yes I got to know the owner a bit, He is a great guy and quite simply loved the car! Originally he parked it up as he needed a 4 door because his family was getting bigger but couldn't part with the car. Always, I'm guessing intending to get her back on the road, it just never happened. He has now retired and is busier than ever and finally decided he wouldn't get round to it, have the time or space to do it. I was literally in the right place at the right time (with a lot of begging) when he finally agreed to sell it to me. YES!!!!

All I have done so far is to put some WD40 down the bores and I will try and turn it soon (just by hand!) Oh and also I had to get rid of the very comfortable family of mice that were living in there!! So now I have to take everything out and make sure all the wiring etc is ok before I connect anything.

The interior is like a another world compared to the outside. That bonnet looks like rice paper. Try these people if you don't know them already? They might have some clues? Dutch Celeste Club

hi paul, great find! to be honest i think this is a case of "it looks worse than it realy is". once you start stripping it down and get the welder out I'm sure it wont be too long before your on the home straight and the cars in the paint booth! enjoy your new project and keep the pics coming!

It's all there at least.
Great buy, love the shape and all the trim is very nice. That interior looks like it ready to go.
Hope it all goes swimmingly for you, these are great cars and it deserves keeping intact and it's found a good home with you.

A fantastic rescue, the first picture looked daunting but it'll be a good base to restore. Bookmarked too.

A good classic chrome specialist would be able to sort that front bumper for you - I have repaired and had far worse rechromed before today - if the bonnet frame is sound / repairable the bonnet outer skin could soon be replicated by a panel specialist if you cannot source a replacement.

A good reason to mold a fiberglass or carbon bonnet or skin?
Painted bumpers needn't look out of place either.
